I am an asthma patient, is it completely curable? And I am a pure vegetarian and I am very thin, so what all the foods can make me normal?

MBBS, MD - Community Medicine
General Physician, Jaipur
Its not curable but its completely controllable. Foods usually not related to asthma. But 1-2 hour physical activity/ exercise should be in your habit, it improves your lung capacity to fight asthma.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - Causes And Symptoms

COPD, which is short for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is a severe form of lung disease that is characterized by increased breathlessness and obstruction of airflow from the lungs. People who are suffering from COPD are at an increased risk of developing lung cancer, heart diseases and many other conditions. It includes progressive lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, few forms of bronchiectasis and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. The former two are the most common conditions contributing to COPD.

Chronic bronchitis induces inflammation in the airway that carries air to the lungs and fills it with mucus. This either completely blocks the airway or narrows it, causing difficulty in breathing. However in emphysema, the air sacs inside the lungs which inflate and deflate as you breathe in and out, lose their elasticity due to which less air comes in and goes out leaving you breathless.

The best way to treat COPD is to quit smoking. Your doctor may also prescribe you medications or ask you to enroll in a lung rehab program.
Causes:

  1. Smoking: Smoking is one of the most common causes of COPD. This is because smoking is known to destroy the stretchy fibers in people's lungs and irritate the airways. Even passive smoking is unhealthy. About 90% of the people having COPD are current or former smokers.
  2. Genetics: Some individuals suffer from COPD even after refraining from smoking. Genes might be at the helm of COPD in such a case. AATD i.e. Alpha -1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, is a protein in the lungs, the lack of which is one of the most common genetic factor causing emphysema.
  3. Environmental factors: Breathing in harmful pollutants present in your environment is also one of the causes of COPD. Fumes, dust or certain chemicals are a few examples of harmful lung irritants. Organic cooking fuel may also cause COPD. Exposing yourself to the aforementioned environmental factors for a prolonged period of time increases your risk of developing COPD substantially.

Symptoms:

  1. Shortness of breath especially after exercising
  2. Wheezing
  3. Tightness in your chest
  4. Unintended weight loss
  5. Lack of energy
  6. Frequent respiratory infections
  7. Wheezing
  8. Cough accompanied by mucus

Diagnosis:

  1. Physical Exam where your doctor monitors the functioning of your lungs.
  2. Questioning about your past health (Smoking or other harmful lung irritants).
  3. Spirometry and other breathing tests.
  4. Chest x-rays and other tests to eliminate other problems which could be causing your symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist.

Hi zeeshan. I can understand the pain you are going through. For your tonsillitis .start with warm salt water gargles atleast twice daily and pain killers twice daily too. This should ease your pain. But for complete treatment you need to visit an ent surgeon. Take care dear.

I am suffering from sub-acute tonsillitis and pharyngitis for last 4 years. The tonsils are not very swollen but there is a white patch on the left tonsil, and overall the throat looks red. I don't get fevers but there is a constant throat irritation. Allopathic doctors and surgeons have suggested a tonsil removal. Please provide suggestion.

ENT Specialist,
Get a throat swab done for culture of organisms. Also CBC when there is problem. If recurrent complaints and infection proven then operation is helpful. Otherwise throAt irritation may persist even after operation.

If you can get a spirometry done with bronchodilator reversibility, its a blowing test, please consult me with reports in the private clinic. Asthma is a simple disease to treat provided patients get the right inhalers and take them regularly and correctly. Take care

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

I am suffering from dry cough for the last 2 weeks and I have chest pain whenever I cough hard. Can you suggest what ...
Hi lybrate-user. A cough is a sudden and often repetitively occurring reflex which helps to clear the large breathing passages from secretions, irritants, foreign particles and microbes. Ayurveda addresses cough as the kasa roga. Ayurvedic sciences primarily name the vata dosha as the prime cause of cough although kapha dosha and pitta dosha are also considered responsible. Ayurvedic treatment for cough can be bifurcated into two parts, the usage of herbs and abiding by dietary restrictions. Medication:- medication:- 1. Cof x-5 ml with warm water twice a day. 2. Sitopaladi churna-1/4tsp with honey daily 3-4 times a day. For 5 days. Medicines ayurvedic treatment for cough and cold is also about dietary regulations. Some of the norms to be abided by would include: 1. Warm up the water before drinking as this would soothe the throat. 2. Avoid consuming anything cold directly from the fridge. 3. Do not consume veggies and fruits which have a cooling impact on the body. These would include papayas, oranges, watermelons, green bananas and cucumbers. 4. Preferably you should opt for consuming rice from an older crop if possible.

Seasonal allergy causes some symptoms sinusitis rashes sneeze during rainy season what should I do to get rid of it.
Allergy is an abnormal state of hyper sensitivity and hyper susceptibility in a person. It shows itself by immediate influence and abnormal response to a specific substance. The same substance is harmless in similar amounts for the majority of people. Your allergic problem can be very well treated by homoeopathy without adverse effects.
