Hello Mr. Lybrate-user, as per your queries, it seems you should get a hearing check up done. As per your childeren, they are quiet right on their point as, it seems you hv got a high frequencies hearing loss, where you can miss sounds like bell, door bell, telephone ring etc. It is purely due to ageing or could be due to some associate problem like high b. P, increased blood sugar or could be due to thyroid also. It is necessary to done a hearing test very soon. After that further step can be taken.

I am 23 years old. I met ENT doctor for my ear which had puss draining from it for every 2 days and he said there is a hole in the ear drum and he said surgery is the only option to cure it. He gave me ear drops, using this made all the liquid drain out from my ear. My doubt is am able to hear properly and I also read that for eardrum rupture surgery is the last option. Should I go for surgery or any other remedy is available?

You need a surgery for hole in eardrum with recurrent infection. You can confirm your hearing level with help of a test called audiometry. You are young person you should not carry on such problem for prolonged period. In rare types of ear drum hole a nonsurgical procedure called chemical cautery can be tried but if it works for you that has to be decided by your ent surgeon. Success rate of such procedure is around 50% so the best option is surgery only.

You are a diabetic and should not be using iic or cic hearing aids. Starkey and Oticon both have mini-RIC type of hearing aids which also have Bluetooth pairing with your Smartphone. A good hairstylist can better conceal this device than any canal occluding aid. And the sound clarity is a huge difference with no occlusal effect and best of all batteries which last upto 10 days. Newer rechargeable batteries also available.

Dear lybrate-user. You are neglecting the health of your child by wasting time here. Pus discharge with pain and cold n cough indicate acute otitis media secondary to urti. So pls take the child to nearest Ent immediately and take proper treatment because if the ear drum perforation becomes permanent then you won't be spared from cursing yourself for causing deafness to the child. Hope you understand the situation.

First, you have to do a audiometry test to check the status of your ear. Im sure the problem must be in your middle ear system. So you continue medicine and consult your dr.

Recurrent cold associated with ringing and hearing loss suggests that there is fluid collection behind eardrum or there is damage to eardrum or tiny delicate bony chain behind it please visit an ent surgeon get full assessment with audiogram and impedance test to judge extent and severity of damage to find how much can be recovered.

It sounds like there is more to this than has been identified so far. Please seek a second opinion from another psychiatrist and she must go for counseling too along with the medication. It is the combination of these two therapies that she can get the best results. She will need to take her parents along to identify any childhood influences and for genetic factors too. She will need a lot of your support and careful monitoring to really help her through this.

You could have developed sensori neural hearing loss. Need to be investigated for possible surgical procedure if not benefitted with hearing aids.

Hello,my father is having hearing problem. We consulted a doctor. He conducted some tests and said he has cold accumulated in his ear and needs to be operated. Is there any other way?

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS

Hearing loss can be conductive due to problem in sound conduction pathway by ear drum or ear ossicles(bones) or neural deafness that can be diagnosed by an audiometry. If it comes out to be conductive, can be treated by surgery and if neural then it will require hearing aid.

Meniere s Disease - What are the Reasons Behind It

Meniere s Disease - What are the Reasons Behind It

What Causes Meniere’s Disease?
Meniere's Disease is a disorder that basically affects the sense of balance and hearing of the patient. This condition takes place in the inner ear and it may cause problems like vertigo, where patients experience a spinning sensation and a ringing sound as well. This is a chronic disorder, which requires a number of lifestyle changes so that it can be managed and treated without becoming a debilitating problem.

Read on to know more about the symptoms and causes of the condition.

Symptoms: The various signs and symptoms of this disease include a feeling of fullness in the ear, which has been affected by the condition. Also, most patients have a spinning sensation and a ringing sound in the affected ear. Nausea and vomiting may also be caused by this condition, along with sweating and loss of balance. It is also normal to feel uncoordinated when you are suffering from this condition.

Secondary Symptoms: This condition may also cause many other complications, which are known as secondary symptoms. These include anxiety, depression and stress. This usually happens due to the problems in the ear and even the problem of vertigo. This may cause problems for people who climb heights or ladders for their work or even for other recreational causes. The constant sense of dizziness and spinning may cause a person to become anxious and undertake stress when it comes to carrying out various kinds of functions in day to day living.

Causes: There are various causes of this condition, even though many medical reports suggest that the exact cause has not really been understood so far. As any doctor will tell you, the in the inner ear there is a labyrinth which contains fluids. When there is a problem with the composition and level of these fluids, the patient may develop Meniere’s Disease. This condition specifically affects the inner part of the ear. This part is made up of passages and a cavity as well as soft membrane like structures with hair like sensors. These sensors respond to the fluid’s movement within the ear. When this fluid does not have the appropriate levels, it can lead to many complications like Meniere’s Disease, which affect the nerve impulse that these sensors catch and transmit to the brain.

Stages: This disease progresses over a set of three stages. In the very first stage, the patient will experience much dizziness and nausea, before that progresses to the second stage. In this stage, the patient will have moderate to severe vertigo. This is also known as the middle stage. Finally, this may culminate into the third or late stage, which leads to more frequent episodes of vertigo. The hearing of the patient and the ringing sound in the ears will also get worse in this stage.

From early childhood, I have severe hearing loss in my right ear. I do not remember whether it was from birth or was a result of some hitting done on my right ear by one of the bullies (i remember the incident remotely, though can not attribute the hearing loss to that). My left ear is perfect and am a healthy guy of 42 years doing very well professionally and part of top management in one of the reputed companies. I had at the age of 18 years went for a ent check up where they diagnosis as severe hearing loss in the right ear. However, when I put in a earphone in my right ear and tightly close my left ear to close any sound, I can remotely hear, but only very light sounds. My query is, can I try to recover my right ear hearing or leave it? Is there any hope of recovery? Though you might say it needs to be checked, but what do you make out first cut from the details that I have provided? Now a days with so much advances in med sciences, I am hoping you cd help me with your valuable advice and way forward.

hi, if its severe loss or damage to your inner ear unfortunately it cannot be reveresed. like you mentioned in the comment that science have advanced to the extent to help the patient to hear better with a better hearing aid and customised solutions as per the reqyirment of the patient. if the loss is creating a serious impact on your lifestyle or ur profession would suggest you to go for a good hearing device. if you are shy to wear a external device you have various models which can fit inside your ear as well and that may give a bit of sigh from your condition

Hello Doctor, my cousin brother has never been in a relationship but has had a number of crushes/attractions (which he calls" love") over the years to an extent that at times he behaves like a psycho lover. His" love" lasts for at the most 2 months and he is well aware of it. Though, at times, I make it clear that I am not going to hear about his irrational and childish activities, he still keeps on sharing them with me as well as all his relatives and friends and is dependant on us for suggestions. Currently, he is in love with some one in his workplace who has made it very clear that she is" not available" But, even then he says" he desperately wants her" I have made him understand that he should behave when in office as it might have a negative impact on his career. Although, he is a diligent employee, he still keeps pursuing this girl in question and his antiques have unnerved a few of his coworkers in the process. Everyone jokes about him. But, he does not get any hint that people are having a negative impression about his family too. He has always been pampered by most of his relatives and has had psychological problems as a child too. Please suggest a way so that I can help him understand as to how he can be a rational and responsible being.

Also let him take responsibility for his own behaviour. At 27, he is capable of solving his own problems. These are his problems, don't consider these problems as your problems, and let him handle it. Do not encourage him to behave like a child. Maintain some distance from his personal life. If he has been pampered by his relatives as a child, he has got used to this kind of treatment, and the same thing he is expecting from you now. If he has had some psychological problems as a child then please take him to a counsellor. The counsellor will do the needful.

Get the t hearing test done first. The most possible kind of loss that the report will show is sensorineural type of loss. In which surgeries /medicines/laser nothing works as effective as hearing aids. As she is suffering from last 8 years better to go for hearing aids soon possible. Otherwise later her understanding ability will be worse for sure even after using hearing aids.
