I met with an accident 6 months ago in which I had severe knee injury. Doctors confirmed that there is no fracture or ligament tear, but they suspect a meniscus tear in the right knee. I have been going through medication including vitamin supplements like depura 60k, for the past six months. Is it safe and advisable to start doing exercises to strengthen my knee. Will this help to cure my knee? And by exercises I mean jogging, sit-ups, lunges etc. I would like to have some advice!

Hello doctor. I am 19 years old and I am having leg pain problem, whenever I start running.?
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Hi lybrate-user! thanks for seeking help from us please show an orthopedics doctor who may assess the ankle joint for any minimal sprain, its best generally to use elastic support or anklet, do hot fermentation and take a short course of anti inflammatory drugs, avoid sport for 7 days or walking without ankle protection. Rest promotes healing and for partial strains of ligaments around ankle, an elastic protective support for some immobilization is very necessary to avoid a lingering pain afterwards. So see a doctor soon thanks

Avoid sitting Cross legged. Avoid Squatting- Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. I see that you had to go through difficult times during your boarding school days. Since you were ill treated by your friends you probably have lost faith in people. It has affected your self esteem as well. You are probably feeling worthless. Hence you do not find any joy in life and feel lonely and sad. I also sense that you are ashmed of yourself. I feel very sorry to see what all this has done to you. But please remember, that you are unique. Whatever has happened in your boarding school, it's over now. If it was your mistake, please understand that we all are human beings and we all make mistakes. So forgive yourself and try not to repeat the mistake. If it was not your mistake and if still you were defamed, then have faith in yourself and don't allow others' negativity affect your soul. Because, you know your own self but others may not be able to recognise your true personality. Tell yourself that you do not need anyone's certificate. If you think that you need to improve upon certain personal skills, try to learn some new life skills. Try to be true to your own self and to others. Try to make new friends, understand the goodness in each person you meet, compliment people if you like something about them, keep company of people with positive attitude. If possible seek support from your family - talk to them. Once you gain back your self confidence, and once you start making friends, you will start laughing and start enjoying life again. Take care.

Osteoporosis Spine Fractures: Risks, Symptoms and Treatments

Osteoporosis Spine Fractures: Risks, Symptoms and Treatments

Osteoporosis is a condition wherein the bones become brittle and weak; so much so that even mildly stressful activities such as coughing, bending over or even a slight fall (such as the one from a high rise chair) can result in fractures. Osteoporosis-related fractures commonly occur in the spine, hip or the wrist. The human body has a continuous mechanism of bone absorption and removal. In case of osteoporosis, the creation of new bones doesn’t happen in accordance with the removal of old bones.

Spinal Fractures:

The bones of the spine get extremely vulnerable to breakage and even cracking open. The fractures in the spine, also known as vertebral compression fractures can cause a sharp stinging pain in the back that may make sitting, standing, or even walking a very tardy task.

Risk Factors:

  1. Increasing age

  2. Abnormally less or high body weight

  3. Smoking

  4. Menopause or low levels of sex hormones

  5. Gender: This disorder is more likely to affect women as compared to men. Also women, who are above 50 are more likely to suffer from this debilitating disorder.

  6. Race is a significant risk factor of osteoporosis. If you are of Asian descent, you are more likely to be affected by it.

  7. Having a family history of osteoporosis will put you at a greater risk of this disorder.

Symptoms:

  1. Fractured or collapsed vertebra causing back pain

  2. A stooped posture

  3. A shrunken appearance (as if one has had loss of height)

  4. Very fragile bones, thus increasing risks of fractures

  5. Severe and sudden pain in the back

  6. Difficulty in twisting or bending the body

Lower spine fractures are way more troublesome as compared to fractures in the upper spine. Fracturing more than a bone in the spine also remains a huge possibility.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

Firstly, an X-ray or a computerized tomography (CT scan) will be done to have a closer look at the bones. A bone density test is another commonly used method of diagnosing osteoporosis.

  1. Steroids and medications: Some medications may be used to prevent or combat osteoporosis. These include alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate and zoledronic acid.

  2. Physical therapy: Just like muscles, bones get stronger too when you exercise. Weight-bearing and muscle- strengthening exercises are the most helpful in this regard and are considered best for the treatment of osteoporosis. Cardiovascular exercises such as walking, jogging or even swimming can prove to be immensely beneficial.

  3. Diet: Make a diet chart that includes high-calcium food items, dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and low-fat milk, tofu, green vegetables such as collard greens and broccoli, sea fish such as salmon and sardines.

  4. Salt: Limit salt intake

  5. Therapy: Hormone replacement therapy (treatment method consisting of estrogens to alleviate and treat symptoms of osteoporosis) is another method of treatment that can be recommended by the doctor. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.
