: keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day.

I am having pain above my knee, unable to put much pressure, unable to bend properly , it causes severe pain. I had this problem 3 weeks before , had medicine instagesic which gave bit relief, but again this pain and stiffness started.

Hi , You may need a Ayurvedic physician visit.As medicines are giving you a short term relief then this means that a proper diagnosis of the disease condition is must. Consuming just painkillers will not be a permanent solution for your disease.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You are very young to actually have persistent back pains. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Hello lybrate-user. Kindly elaborate on your problem, how long it has been, how severe it is, is it more on working and eases out after rest or is it continuous throughout the day, any associated weight loss or fever. Also an xray would help us diagnose your problem better, in the meanwhile you can start with a couple of days rest and follow it up with core and back strengthening exercises for a week. It is actually known that office workers sitting on their computers for a long time can have chronic neck pains and with a bad posture can subsequently develop back pain as well. It may be due to wrong sitting posture. Correct your posture whether you are sitting or travelling in a vehicle (2 wheeler). Also do hip rotation in the morning. Oil massage and fomentation will also help.

Apply prasarini oil or pranacharya restopain oil on affected part then give hot fomentation. Take maha yograj guggul 1-1 twice a day after lunch and dinner. Take maharasnadi kwath 2-2 tsf twice a day. Avoid tea. Coffee. Junk food. Spicy food. Fermented food. Take green vegetables. Drink juice. Eat fruits. Drink 7-8 glass of water in a day. Few remedies to keep back pain at bay –

1.Keep yourself warm
Back pain is caused due to vitiated vata and the main quality of vata is that it is cold and so it is necessary to keep yourself warm to prevent this disease.

2.Avoid intake of spicy/chilly food
Another feature of a vitiated vata dosha is dryness. To keep yourself hydrated it is necessary to keep a check on your diet. Chilly or spicy food like green chilies and can have a drying effect on the body which can in turn cause constipation, resulting in back pain.

3.Perform and Practice Padahastasana
Padahastasana (standing forward fold pose) is a great Yoga pose for lower back pain as this prevents the restriction of the stool-carrying channels that causes both constipation and lower back pain. Most of the reasons of back pain are not muscular and Padahastasana helps in elimination of the toxins from the body.

4.Oil your body
A vitiated vata causes stress, exertion, depletion and tiredness which in turn cause back pain. Also excess build-up of vata dosha leads to early ageing, and pain in various parts of the body. So to keep yourself young, supple and warm it is necessary that you oil your body daily before a warm shower. This will not just reduce pain in your back but will also slow your ageing process and make your skin healthy and strong.

5.Drink Ajwain (Bishop’s weed seed) tea
Ajwain seeds are highly beneficial for reducing and preventing pain in the back, as well as checking constipation. This can be included in the diet of a person not suffering from heat-related diseases. This is especially good to be consumed during the time of periods by women. Ajwain seeds can be boiled in water and consumed as a decoction. It is an instant pain reliever.

Applying cold compresses to the painful knee is one of the best and easiest ways to reduce pain and swelling. The cold will constrict the blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the affected area and thus reducing swelling. It will also give you relief from the pain. 1. Wrap a handful of ice cubes in a thin towel. 2. Apply the compress to the affected knee area for 10 to 20 minutes. 3. Do this two or three time daily until your pain is gone. A bag of frozen peas also works well as a cold compress. You can opt for alternating hot and cold compresses as well for chronic pains.

Dear lybrate user, diagnosis of spine pain is complex thing and primary physician is not equipped well with diagnosis of same, forget about treatment. I'd advise you to consult some orthopedician trained in spine or interventional pain specialist nearby for correct diagnosis to find out the source of problem.

Cause of cramps are many ,from dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, calcium ,vitamin D deficiency, B12 deficiency, circulatory issues etc. Consult a physician for tests. Do stretching exercises after oil massage of legs. Calcium,vitamin D, B12 supplementation, lots of water and fruit juice may prevent.

Hi. It' s sounding good that you are concern about your mother! Tell her to take homoeopathic medicines - Petroleum 200/ twice daily and Topi- Azadirachta ointment by Schwabe' to be applied on the area in morning after bathing and at night.
