How Nosebleed Can Be Stopped?

MBBS, Fellowship In FESS, MS - ENT, MS - (Oto-Rhino-Laryn)
ENT Specialist, Faridabad
How Nosebleed Can Be Stopped?

A nosebleed also called epistaxis medically is normally not dangerous, but if you are old nosebleeds come with a number of risks. Treating a bloody nose incorrectly can only make it more dangerous, because of prolonged bleeding. Before we explain the ways to stop nosebleeds, let’s take a look at its causes:
Nosebleeds usually start from just inside the entrance of the nostril. But, why? Because the blood vessels here are quite fragile and are also prone to rupture easily. This is the reason why children suffer from nosebleeds so easily. Other common reasons are

  1. A blocked nose due to colds
  2. Picking one's nose roughly
  3. Blowing one's nose
  4. Injuries
  5. Use of cocaine

A nosebleed usually lasts for about 10-20 minutes and is usually easy to treat. But in some conditions, this bleeding can be profuse and last longer like in cases of

  1. Heart failure
  2. Blood clotting disorders
  3. Due to 'blood thinning' medicines
  4. Hypertension

Bleeding can sometimes also happen in areas further back in the nose due mostly to injuries and disorders of the nose.

Treatment
Usually, nosebleeds can be stopped using simple first aid.

  1. Sitting up straight helps, especially along with tipping your head forward. It is vital that you don’t tip your head backwards as this can allow the blood to go down your throat and cause vomiting. And this can make your nosebleed worse. So, take care to spit out the blood in your mouth and not to swallow it.
  2. To stop a nosebleed, pinch the soft, cartilaginous part of your nose using your thumb and forefinger. Spraying your nose with a medicated nasal spray before pinching it can help the bleeding to stop faster. Apply pressure for 10 minutes to get results. Check if your nosebleed has stopped after 10 minutes if it’s not; apply pressure for another 10 minutes. Nosebleeds usually stop after 10 to 20 minutes of pressure.
  3. Use an ice pack to your nose and cheeks. This will constrict the blood vessels in the nose and stop the nosebleed.
  4. Use a saline- or water-based nasal gel inside your nose to stop bleeding.
  5. Remember not to blow your nose or insert anything into your nose for at least 12 hours after your nosebleed is over.
  6. If the bleeding doesn’t stop even after 20 minutes of applying direct pressure, it’s prudent to rush to a doctor. He will treat your nose to stop the bleeding.
  7. In a few rare cases, the bleeding is so severe that a blood transfusion is needed, and surgery may be needed to stop it.

Hello Sir, I am a student and I could not sleep before 4 am I don't know why I think because of depression? What shou...
The human body has an internal clock that is constantly reset by the activities you do and exposure to light. The clock determines for instance, that it is night if there is low light exposure, decreased activity and so on. So, if our routine is variable, the clock is confused. So the first thing to remember is to have a reasonably fixed time of going to bed and waking up. The amount of sleep for a given 24 hour period is limited, akin to a mobile recharge with validity. We need to spend it wisely. So if you sleep during the day, you may not have a good night's sleep; if you spend data on unnecessary things, you will not have enough when you need it! remember the restaurant where you had some really delicious biryani. The moment you walk into it, your mouth waters in anticipation. So too, your bed must make your body anticipate sleep; not work, tv or something else. In other words, reserve the bed for sleep, not for working, watching tv etc. Sleep is a state of relaxation. Anything activating disturbs sleep. So do not take coffee, tea, cola after say 7 pm in the night! there are other ways in which the body can feel activated, and therefore also interfere with sleep. Avoid watching action movies and listening to heavy music before sleeping time. Of course, the bed room must not be brightly lit or noisy. What about exercise, it is always healthy right? yes, but exercise must be done well before the sleeping hours; lets say no exercise after 7 or 8 pm in the night. Why? while exercise during the day keeps you healthy, gets you tired and promotes sleep, if done late in the day, its activating properties interfere with sleep! what if I don't fall asleep. Then I keep checking the time, keep rolling in the bed forcing myself to fall asleep. Bad idea! you try to fall asleep you become more alert, a phenomenon known as paradoxical intention! so what should you do? if you don't fall asleep, get out of the bed, sit on a chair and read a book. Don't do anything activating. Once you start feeling drowsy, get back to bed. Besides invoking paradoxical intention, you are also preventing the body from associating bed with struggling to sleep. What about alcohol, it helps you fall asleep right? right and wrong! while it does apparently put you to sleep, it is associated with poor sleep quality. So you have slept without the benefits of having slept! avoid heavy meals just before sleep a warm water bath may be helpful now for the practically most important advice! if you fell asleep late, still wake up at the scheduled time, even if it means feeling tired and drowsy the next day. You will feel troubled for a day or two, but will start having good sleep at the desired time at night. Also resist the temptation to take a nap during the day. If you wake up late or take a nap during the following day, the whole cycle will continue - sleep late, wake up late!
