Tobacco - 7 Ways it Affects Your Dental Health

Tobacco - 7 Ways it Affects Your Dental Health

Tobacco has many ill effects on the health and dental health is one of them. From dark stains to poor gum health to increased incidence of decay to the more severe oral cancer, tobacco has a very detrimental effect on your dental health. Read on know more about how harmful tobacco can be on the dental system.

  1. Brown teeth and tongue: One of the tell-tale signs of a smoker are the brown teeth and stained tongue. A dentist need not even be told that the person smokes, it just shows!! What is interesting is that these stains do not go away with a scaling, they just continue to form as long as tobacco is being put into the system.
  2. Gum disease: The oral health of a smoker is definitely not at its best. With the stains on the teeth, the gums are more prone for irritation and infection. This leads to grayish, unhealthy gums. The periodontal fibers are also affected, leading to bad breath, pocket formation and even tooth mobility in severe cases. The mouth is generally drier in comparison and so bacterial growth is more favored, further accelerating the process of gum disease and teeth decay.
  3. Dental caries: The increased amount of bacteria leads to greater incidence of dental decay. Chances of cervical decay (around the gum line) and root decay are higher in smokers.
  4. Bad breath: There are two reasons to it one is the tobacco per se and the second is the dry mouth, which leads to reduced saliva and increased bacterial growth.
  5. Impaired taste: The tongue has a constant coating too, leaving the taste buds unable to completely taste food substances. Ask any smoker a couple of questions and you would realize how they never get to enjoy and taste the food as it should be.
  6. Poor healing: Whether it is a gum disease, a tooth removal or a root canal therapy, smokers who go for dental treatment need a longer time to respond compared to nonsmokers. If smoking is continued at the same pace, then the chances of developing a dry socket with an extraction or a failed root canal therapy are quite high. There are more failures reported in success of implant in smokers as compared to non smokers.
  7. Cancer: The most dangerous and the most severe of all, cancer of the cheek, gums, lips, tongue, roof of the mouth can all happen in smokers, twice more likely in comparison with non-smokers.

Now, if all these are not good enough to kick the habit, remember this list is only for the mouth and the teeth. The whole body goes through a lot more harmful effects, and that should be a good reason to quit tobacco use in any form. If you need professional help, do not be embarrassed to seek.

Most probably these black spots may be start of tooth decay or cavity. Go for proper investigation to rule out wether it is drcay or any kind of deposition or discolouration. If cavity then get it filled as early as possible.

She is having fainting episodes due to a phenomenon called syncope in which there is a sudden fall of bp. Even tooth pain itself can cause this. It could also happen if she is allergic to the medicine. Stop the medicine. Get her checked for anemia. Get treatment from a dentist. She should be fine.

Bad breath can b caused fue to various reasons. Due to smoking n using tobacco products, dental prob such as decay teeth, unclean tongue, gum infections, reduced saliva n dry mouth, ill fitting dentues, salivary gland probs. Other diseases n infections which also cause bad breath r sinus infections, respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis n pneumonia, liver n kidney probs, diabetes, acid reflux from stomach etc. Get scalling done by dentist. Use proper brushing techniques. Brush, floss n use mouthwash twice daily. Massage your gums with your finger tips after brushing. Keep your tongue clean. Rinse your mouth well after each meal. Get your decay teeth filled. Visit your dentist for dental checkups every 6 months to detect n prevent dental probs. Drink plenty of fluids n lime juice. Inspite of these measures if bad breath persists, consult a general physician for further evaluation.

I mostly suffer from constipation and mouth ulcers. How to cure this problem. Mouth ulcers are very painful.

I mostly suffer from constipation and mouth ulcers. How to cure this problem. Mouth ulcers are very painful.
Do lukewarm saltwater gargling whenever you feel there is an ulcer and then be on a soft and cold diet at the same time. Avoid smoking or use of any tobacco. Get your constipation problem sorted out by visiting a gastroenterologist. N as well I can go for a tooth check up like if there is any sharp teeth which arr actually causing this ulcer thing in your mouth. Then grinding of the sharp tooth cusps can be done to omit the local irritation hope this will help thanks.

I have a problem of bad breath I used so many toothpaste but not work what would I do to solve this problem.
Just changing the tooth paste will not help you solve the problem. Because the food particles stuck between your teeth must have become hard. Please visit a dentist for cleaning and polishing of the teeth. Following that, brush twice a day. Use a medicated mouth wash. Also, do tongue cleaning. Drink lots of water. Also, check for any cavity present in your teeth.

Cavity is slow process and it is multifactor dependent. Only brushing teeth may not help you. Other factors like sweet intake, smoking, low water intake, digestive system disorder, low saliva ph, weak tooth structure also make you prone for cavities. Therefore, visit your dentist and get all teeth treatment by filling or rct as required. Then follow cavity prevention program advised by your dentist.
