When Do Kidneys Need Dialysis?

When Do Kidneys Need Dialysis?

Kidneys are a pair of organs that are located on either side of the spine, each about a size of a fist. The kidneys help in purifying blood by removing toxins, waste materials and excess fluids from the human body. Disorders and dysfunctions of the kidney can lead to severe and often fatal consequences. When the kidneys stop functioning as they are supposed to, dialysis is performed to resume normal functioning in the body.

Dialysis is a type of treatment, which filters and purifies the blood with the aid of a machine. It is an artificial way of purifying blood. There are two types of dialysis, namely hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis, the most common form of dialysis, which involves using a manmade kidney called a hemodialyzer, which removes toxins and waste materials from blood.

Peritoneal Dialysis, on the other hand, is a type of treatment which involves implanting a catheter in the stomach. During the procedure, a fluid called dialysate flows into the abdomen that absorbs all the waste material, which is consequently drained out of the body.

You may need a dialysis if:

- Your kidneys are dysfunctional
- When waste materials and toxins start to accumulate in the body
- In an event of an injury or accident to the kidney such as internal lacerations (wound caused by the tearing of a tissue)
- If the creatinine (a type of a chemical waste product) level falls to 10-12 cc/minute
- In an event where the kidneys aren't able to work properly leading to accumulation of toxins, irregular amounts of chemicals in the body and other dysfunctions

Weakening of the abdominal muscles and weight gain are some of the risks involved in dialysis. Dialysis is a temporary treatment and serves to function till the time the actual kidneys get repaired. In chronic cases of kidney disease, kidney transplant may perhaps be the last resort.

I am 26 years old and suffering from urinal problem i.e I have frequent urination (peeing) after drinking water. I went to doctor they suggest me to have xray of penis urethra and uroflowmetry .in xray report shows there is blockage in urethral opening and in uroflometry my urination is slow. Also there is a xray of kidney they showed no prostate in kidney. Pls suggest any non surgical method to resolve this issue.

PGD Maternal Child Health, MBBS
General Physician, Akola
As your urethra shows a blockage and uroflowmetry shows slow evacuation of bladder you need dilatation of urethra by catheters or if strictures are detected, by resection. Continuation without treatment will affect kidneys due to backflow pressure and may also cause total obstruction.

Dear, First get urine test done to confirm or rule out infection if it shows more than 5 pus cells then she has infection and she needs antibiotic like ofloxacin 200 mg twice a day 1 hour before meals with water for 15 days and urispas 1 tab three times for 3-5 days. She should increase her fluid intake. If she does not have infection one has to make sure she is not constipated. If so then she is likely to have anal fissure which is usually due to constipation and she needs treatment for that.

I have stone in my kidney and sometime it pains alot I do not want any operation. Is there any way that I can get rid of it please help.

MBBS
General Physician,
If the stones are large in size or having odd locations like lower calyces of kidney, then it will be hard to get them out by medicines. Else its very much possible your stones will get dissolved in a month by medical treatments. Get an usg kubp done and get back with the report.

Sir prostate enlargement can be benign or malignant. It needs evaluation by serum psa levels, sonography, and transrectal multiple core biopsy for confirmation. If it is benign can be started on some medications or else treatment as per the diagnosis.

I Have facing urinal problem by doing toilet. Some of day I feel pain in urinal way and continue feeling toilets. I don't have any sugar problem. Please suggest me.

lybrate
General Physician, Mumbai
Dear lybrate user, there could be many reasons for this symptoms, common ones being infection or presence of a stone in the tract. A few more details are required to find out the exact reason and some urine sample test to begin with, hence a consultation is advised. Till you consult a doctor, you should drink lots of water (atleast 3-4 litres/day), and you could take some Cranberry juice as this has some evidence in urinary tract infections.
