Habits which can destroy your smile!

Habits which can destroy your smile!

1. Not flossing
Brushing your teeth twice a day is important, but many patients don't realize that flossing at least once a day is just as critical to achieving - and maintaining - a healthy smile. Flossing removes the cavity-causing bacteria left behind from food particles that get stuck between teeth.

2. Brushing too soon after eating
Consuming acidic foods and beverages, such as sports and energy drinks, citrus fruits, wine, and tomatoes, can erode tooth enamel - the glossy outer layer of the tooth. Brushing your teeth too soon after eating and drinking these items can cause more damage because you are essentially brushing the acid into the teeth, not getting rid of it. Instead, you should rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic foods and beverages and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your pearly whites!

3. Not replacing your toothbrush often enough
Not only are old toothbrushes ineffective, but they also harbor harmful bacteria that can cause infections. Toothbrushes should be changed every three to four months.

4. Excessively bleaching your teeth
Overzealous bleaching can cause your teeth to look unnaturally white and increase tooth sensitivity. Before using an at-home bleaching product, talk to your dentist.

5. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush
A hard-bristled toothbrush coupled with an aggressive brushing technique can cause irreversible damage to your gums. Use a soft toothbrush and gently brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle, in a circular motion. Using a back-and-forth, the sawing motion causes the gums to recede, and can expose the root of the tooth, making teeth extremely sensitive.

I have gap between front two teeth. Can I do bonding? Will it be visible? Will it be permanent?

I have gap between front two teeth. Can I do bonding? Will it be visible? Will it be permanent?
Treatment depends upon amount of gap. Ideal treatment is braces. Bonding can be done but some times it may not look very good, may increase size of teeth.

Mouth ulcers are aggravating at best and may be extremely painful. Also called canker sores or aphthous ulcers, mouth ulcers can be triggered by various factors, including stress, illness, or simply biting your cheek. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution. Mix a teaspoon or two of salt with a warm glass of water and let it dissolve. Swish the solution in your mouth from side to side, then spit it into the sink. Don’t swallow the salt solution. Repeat this a few times a day, generally after meals and before you go to bed. Apply some honey to the ulcer. Dab a small amount of pure honey onto the ulcer. This may help ease pain and reduce inflammation. Dry the area with a clean cotton swab first, then use a fresh swab to apply the honey. Look for Manuka honey, as it has the most potent antibacterial qualities. If you can’t find it, though, any kind of honey will help fight bacteria. Suck on ice chips. Stay away from acidic and spicy foods. Try vitamin supplements. Vitamins B and C may help to heal mouth ulcers Homoeopathy is wonderful in treating such chronic, repetitive complaints More details like your family history, past history, thermals, thirst, desires aversions, attitudes is required to make a prescription especially in a chronic case such as yours. Consult in private with the above details. More questions may be asked if required.

HI Bharat, No, there is no natural way to cure a ranula. Ranula is a type of mucocele present on the floor of the mouth. It is present due to the collection of mucin from ruptured salivary gland caused by local trauma. Its best treatment is surgical removal.

Smile Designing

There is always the constant attempt to look better and more appealing. To this effect, smile designing is one particular specialty of cosmetic dentistry with the sole aim of improving a person's smile.
Photographs of various angles, jaw tracing analysis, and simulation of images on the computer are all used to arrive at an optimal size, shape, contour of the jaw and the teeth that can produce the best smile for a given patient. These changes are then replicated on paper and tooth models if required and detailed discussion happen with the patient. Thorough patient counseling is done before initiating work at smile designing.

Some parameters that are manipulated to produce a good smile designing are as follows - first the tooth per se followed by the soft tissues:

  1. Tooth color: In most cases, the tooth color is changed using tooth whitening material or laser. Trust the dentist to achieve a balance between whiteness of the tooth and natural look. In some cases, silver amalgam fillings may be replaced with composite restorations to improve the appearance. Bridges with metal backup may be replaced with complete ceramic crowns too.
  2. Tooth alignment: Crooked or misshaped teeth can be corrected using veneers in minor cases and by orthodontic braces in severe cases. Again, if the patient is very conscious, aesthetic ceramic braces (read more about braces) can be used.
  3. Tooth length: If too much or too less of a tooth is showing during a smile, that needs to be corrected too. Longer teeth are considered to produce a younger appearance than short teeth, which usually is associated with old age and wear and tear. The gums can be reshaped as a part of crown lengthening.
  4. Missing teeth: Teeth that are missing produce a very bad smile and need to be replaced at the earliest for a better smile. Depending on various factors including age and bone health, the choice could be a crown or a bridge or an implant.
  5. Tooth ratio: When a person smiles, the front tooth are the most obvious and should have a ratio of length to width as 4 to 5. This produces a balanced smile.
  6. Tooth texture: Mottling or rough edges on the tooth surface can be corrected by veneers or small composite restorations. As regards the soft tissues.
  7. Gum line: The smile is reproduced on tracing and corrections are made to produce a better smile, even if it requires gum corrections.
  8. Fuller lips and cheeks: Surgical procedures or chemicals may be used to produce fuller lips and cheeks that improve a person's smile.

The next time you are not happy with your smile, visit a dentist. With so many parameters that affect your smile, a little correction could produce a better smile! If you wish to discuss about any specific dental problem, you can consult a specilized dentist and ask a free question.
