I have dark circles around my eyes. My skin has became very dull. I have tried many home remedies. Like lemon. Turmeric. But nothing worked. Please help me.

MD - Acupuncture
Acupuncturist, Thanjavur
Dark circles can affect both men and women. Now there are many reasons for dark circles to appear under your eyes; from stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, a disturbed lifestyle, hereditary and many more. But if not treated on time, they will not only dull your overall appearance, it can also lead to serious health issues. Though chemical based products helps in getting rid of them, but then there are many who have an extremely sensitive skin and only pure home remedies can help them. We list down some easy and doable home remedies which will help you to get rid of dark circles. 1. Tomatoes: tomatoes are an excellent solution for getting rid of dark circle, as it naturally helps to decrease the dark circles and also makes the skin soft and supple. All you need to do is mix one teaspoon of tomato juice with a teaspoon of lemon juice and apply it under your eyes. Let it remain for about 10 minutes and then, wash it off with water. Repeat this remedy at least twice a day. On a daily basis you can also drink tomato juice mixed with some lemon juice and mint leaves in order to get rid of dark circles. 2. Grated potatoes: grate some raw potato and extract the juice of the same. Now take a cotton ball and soak it in the potato juice. Close your eyes and place these cotton balls on your eyes. Make sure they cover the entire area of the dark circles under your eyes as well as the eyelids. Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash off with cold water. 3. Cold tea bags: another simple technique to get rid of the dark circles is using cold tea bags. Soak a tea bag preferably a chamomile or green tea bags in water. Chill it by placing it in the refrigerator for a while. Now, place them over your eyes. Use this remedy on a regular basis to see considerable difference 4. Cold milk: regular use of cold milk will also decrease the dark circles and also soothes your eyes and skin. Take a cotton ball and place it in a bowl of cold milk or iced water for a while. Now apply the cotton ball making sure that it covers the entire eye with the affected area. Keep it for a while. Wash it regular water. 5. Orange juice: another effective home remedy to remove dark circles is orange juice. Mix some orange juice with a few drops of glycerin and apply this mixture over the dark circles. Not only will it diminish the dark circles it will also give a natural glow to your eyes. Thank you.

I am 21 years old. I had a migraine problem. I took treatment for couple of months. But it seems no relief in pain.

COMT, MPTh/MPT
Physiotherapist, Surat
Headaches due to migraine is very common these days especially in young adults because of there lifestyle and working environment. Sometimes pain is very severe on one side of the head.  So I would recommend you to avoid stress and anxiety, quiet the mind from distractions. Stay calm positive and do deep breathing exercises, listen some music that would give you some relaxation. If pain is severe then place ice pack over forehead and lie down for some time to relax your mind and give you comfort and stress full life. Massage your head using levander oil or clove oil as it removes toxins from body. You can use mint or clove spray for inhaling in case of headache. If pain is severe you can also apply ginger paste over the painful area. Avoid taking caffeine, alcohol, phenylethylamine (found in chocolate and cheese), tyramine (found in nuts and fermented meats, cheeses, and soy), and aspartame (in many artificially sweetened foods) as sometimes these all exaggerate pain instead use basil leaves tea or ginger tea boiled nicely in water without milk. Regular intake of healthy dietry food rich in proteins and vitamins. Avoid fasting - Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at fixed timings. Make yourself busy by fulfilling your hobby as it will give you freshness and your mind will be diverted from normal life which help in pain reduction. Take min 7 hours of sleep. Make a habit of 20-25 min walking daily along with some meditations. If required then only take pain relieving tablets. For more help or instructions please consult. Good Luck and Get Well Soon.

Hello sir, I am very slim and I want to improve My body fitness and health. So. Would I need any body supplement if yes. So, which supplement is better to me. please Give me suggestions.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Thanks for the query. Firstly understand that weight gain is very dependent on genetics and metabolism. It is important to know that just eating just two heavy meals a day will not help. Eating the right foods at the right time is very important. Eat meals at frequent intervals. Eat a mid meal between each main meal. Avoid junk foods. Include dairy, eggs, nuts, fruits in your meals. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Exercise at least thrice a week. Even if you were to take medicines or supplements they will not work in isolation You need to have a calorie and nutrient dense meal. So, first try to improve your diet before you decide to start any supplement.

First ensure that you do not have any medical problems like hidden infection and conditions like gastritis or worm infestation causing loss of appetite. Ensure that you are not stressed and have a good sleep daily. Do regular body-building exercises. Finally the diet should be rich in calories (provided by carbohydrates and fat/oil) and proteins with fruits and vegetables, not necessarily non-veg. Minimize junk food. The supplement you mention may help; it should be taken as recommended by the manufacturer.

Hypertension - All You Need to Know

High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition where the long term force induced by blood on the artery walls may lead to health complications. In some cases high blood pressure can be a chronic condition without any visible symptoms. The normal value of blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg. Even if high blood pressure doesn't have any obvious symptoms, it can cause significant damage to cardiovascular health and blood vessels. Uncontrolled hypertension exposes you to the risks of stroke and cardiac arrest. Following are the causes and complications of hypertension:

Causes of Hypertension
The causes of hypertension vary depending on the two types of the condition namely primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. In case of primary hypertension there are hardly any identifiable causes.

Recently diagnosed high blood pressure with following signs may be due to secondary hypertension:

  1. High blood pressure not responding to blood pressure medications (resistant hypertension)
  2. Very high BP — systolic blood pressure over 180 (mm Hg) or diastolic blood pressure over 120
  3. Sudden-onset high blood pressure before age 30 or after age 55 Risk factors includes-
  4. High blood pressure tends to run in families.
  5. Being overweight or obesity, physically inactivity.
  6. Using tobacco/ smoking or chewing tobacco, too much salt (sodium) in your diet, Drinking too much alcohol
  7. Having more than two drinks a day for men and more than one drink a day for women may affect your blood pressure.
  8. Stress. High levels of stress /family history of high BP

Certain medications like contraceptives, painkillers and some other drugs

  3. Tumors in the adrenal gland
  4. Thyroid issues
  5. Congenital heart defects from birth
  6. Drug abuse
  7. Excessive consumption of alcohol
  8. Complications of hypertension

Persistent high blood pressure can result in atherosclerosis that is hardening of the arteries. This can severely wreck cardiovascular health and cause stroke, heart attack or other complications. Hypertension can also result in a disorder called aneurysm in which the blood vessels tend to swell and weaken. Rupture of an aneurysm can be fatal.

Heart failure is one of the most serious complications associated with hypertension. It becomes increasingly difficult for the heart to pump blood along with the high pressure. Consequently, the heart muscle thickens and leads to cardiac arrest. It can also lead to kidney problems. Narrowing and weakening of certain blood vessels present in the kidney can cause organ failure. It can also lead to eye problems and sometimes even loss of vision due to narrowing or thickening of blood vessels in the eye.

Metabolic syndrome, which refers to a cluster of deficiencies in the metabolism of your body including high triglycerides, low levels of good cholesterol (High density lipoprotein) and high levels of insulin. These metabolic disorders increase the risk of developing diabetes and other complications. Uncontrolled high blood pressure and interference with your ability to remember and think. It can trigger memory loss and affect your understanding and deriving skills. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a general physician.

BHMS
Homeopath, Sindhudurg
Grape seed oil controls hair loss grape seed oil is an effective natural hair conditioner and moisturizer. It can address hair issues like hair loss, dandruff and weakened hair. You can use grapeseed oil as a regular hair care product to get healthy hairs. Grape seed oil contains anti-oxidants that might be effective to control dht production at the hair roots, which happens to be one of the main reasons of hair fall. Simply massage your scalp and hairs regularly at night with this oil, let it seep in overnight and wash off with a cleanser in the morning. Safflower oil for hair fall for preventing hair loss and baldness safflower oil can be used. This oil is rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids which are vital for healthy hairs. You can find two varieties of safflower oils in the market, both of which can be used for hair care. Safflower oil is helpful for permed, colored and dry hair. Use safflower oil for massaging the scalp. Leave it on overnight and rinse in the next morning. Use it every alternate day to get healthy hair.

Hence to minimise above side effects I want to replace any other equivalent medicine in place of Metformin SR, which should be also suitable to me ie a heart's patient whose hearts bare metal standing was done on dt 29-8-13 for which I am taking Ecosprin 75 mg od daily, Atorvastatin10 mg od & Ramipril2.5 mg od on alternate days. Hence please suggest such medicine with potency which have less side effects in place of Metformin SR 1000 mg od. Thanks.

CDIABT, MBBS
Endocrinologist, Mumbai
Your fasting and pp level are normal. However your hba1c is on a lower side. Did you had a low sugar (less than 70mg/dl) in last 3 months. If yes than your medication needs to be changed as low sugar in a heart patient is dangerous. I will advised you to check your sugar before breakfast, before lunch, before dinner, 2 hours after breakfast, 2 hours after lunch, 2 hours after dinner and at 3 am. Whenever you feel dizziness, hunger, sweating or palpitation than check your blood sugar at that time.

5 Reasons Why You Gain Weight As You Age

5 Reasons Why You Gain Weight As You Age

It’s frustrating to see that though there is little change in diet, weight gain becomes normal as we get older. ‘Tyres’ around the tummy and heavy hips are often seen as a sign of being middle aged. There are many reasons for this change in the rate of weight gain. Some of them are:

  1. Lower metabolic rate: As children and teenagers, the body is constantly growing and changing and hence has a high metabolic rate. Metabolic rate refers to the speed with which fat is burned to produce energy. After the age of 30, this metabolic rate naturally slows down and fewer calories are burned. This leads to the accumulation of fat. The only way to boost your metabolic rate and burn fat is by exercising.

  2. Less muscle mass: With age, the muscles in the body also begin to shrink. Thus, instead of forming muscle, fat cells are formed as a result of digestion. When comparing muscles and fat cells, the former burn more calories and hence when they are unavailable, the rate of burning calories is lowered leading to weight gain.

  3. Weight gain in menopause: When it comes to women, menopause is another trigger for weight gain. This is because, this condition is marked by hormonal imbalances. This leads to a sudden drop in estrogen levels that triggers a response in the body to draw out more estrogen from the fat cells. Ultimately, this leads to the formation of more fat. Men too can suffer from hormonal imbalances as they age. This is seen by a drop in testosterone levels that leads to abdominal weight gain.

  4. Sedentary lifestyle: As we get older, our lifestyle turns more sedentary. A sedentary lifestyle is very unhealthy and leads to not only weight gain, but a number of other problems as well. Without regular exercise, the body’s existing metabolic rate further reduces leading to accumulation of fat cells. To combat this, take half an hour out of your schedule every day to go for a walk, cycle or practice any form of exercise.

  5. Stress: Stress not only affects your psychological health, but your physical well-being as well. Being under pressure or anxious can increase the cortisol levels in the body. This creates hunger pangs that lead to unhealthy snacking. When eating in a stressful condition, little or no attention is paid to the food being eaten or the messages your body is trying to give you. This often results in overeating that causes weight gain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.
