I am 57 years old male. My one tooth started shaking before 25 days. It was paining. After 2 to 3 days l pulled it out. Paining stooped. But after 15 days the gum pain started at the spot. I consulted a dentist. In x-ray a small broken tooth is remaining inside and there is infection. Doctor gave me antibiotics and pain killers and told me to remove the remaining tooth by operation. Is it necessary to remove the part of the tooth as there is no paining after completing the antibiotic course.

I have a problem of bad breath, but it is not coming from mouth as it's always kept clean. Is this any sign of any digestive tract related problems?

BDS, CDE Endo-Prostho, CDE - Cast Partial & Complete Dentures
Dentist, Pune
Hello, bad breath could be because of digestive problems, it can be because of fasting, not eating for long hours, not drinking enough water, or if you are having acidity problem. It may be because of pungent eatables like garlic. But still get it checked by a dentist for any deposits and get it cleaned.

Hi sir, my teeth is so sensitive how to recover?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist,
Hi sir, my teeth is so sensitive
how to recover?
A major cause of tooth sensitivity is root exposure. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray) to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning along with desensitizing procedures and / or artificial enamel filling. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person. Until then apply a desensitizing paste (sensodyne tooth paste) on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min until you brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight will be better. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Actually after brushing my teeth of 4 hours automatically bad smell starts coming from my mouth. How can stop this? Please advise.

Advanced Aesthetics, BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently. You can come for a consultation (free of cost) in our clinic.

Yes you can go for a smile makeover. Cost can be discussed only after seeing your teeth. This will correct the problem in a small amount of time compared to braces.

Proper cleaning of the mouth on a daily basis is very necessary. Besides brushing and tongue cleaning, flossing deep into the areas between the teeth and under the gumline, where the toothbrush cannot reach is equally important.

Don' t do brush very hard, it will erode normal gums and it will bleed. So try to learn the exact technique of brushing from a dentist. Don' t do brush more than 3 minutes.

Oil Pulling - Miracle or Fad?

Oil Pulling - Miracle or Fad?

After multiple patients have asked us about the authenticity of oil pulling as a technique, here's what we have to say:

There is no denying all of us wait for a miracle cure to that terrible disease called dental decay. Much of a dentists or a dental hygienists time goes into answering the question,

why do cavities happen? or how do I prevent cavities?

While people usually assume the answer is brushing and flossing there are some lesser known ancient techniques and some ultramodern gadgets that have contributed to our arsenal of options to keep your mouth healthy.

Oil pulling being one of them has been in the limelight of late.

What is oil pulling?

This oral therapy is a type of ayurvedic medicine that dates back 3, 000 years. It involves swishing approximately 1 tablespoon of oil typically coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil in semisolid form (as shown in the pic) in your mouth for about 20 minutes and then spitting it out.

Start with just 5 minutes a day. Twenty minutes of swishing is a long time, and while the longer you pull, the more bacteria you'll remove, 5 or 10 minutes will still offer some benefit.

A gentle swishing, pushing, and sucking the oil through the teeth is all that's required

Don't swallow. if you find it hard not to, you likely have too much oil in your mouth, spit it out and try again with a smaller amount. just discard the used oil into the nearest cup or trash can.

Why oil pulling? how does it work?

Recent studies show that oil pulling helps against gingivitis, plaque, and microorganisms that cause bad breath.

How? most microorganisms inhabiting the mouth consist of a single cell, cells are covered with a lipid, or fatty, membrane, which is the cell's skin. When these cells come into contact with oil, a fat, they naturally adhere to each other.

Which oil?

Use coconut oil. While you can get the same bacteria-fighting benefits with sesame or sunflower oil, coconut oil has the added benefit of lauric acid, which is well-known for its anti-microbial agents. Also, a recent study found that coconut oil may help prevent tooth decay.

coconut and sunflower oil aren't the only oils with dental health benefits. For irritated, inflamed gums, rub a little vitamin e oil directly on the surface. It's rich in antioxidants, easily absorbed, and helps regenerate healthy gum tissue.

Additional benefits

Reducing decay
Whitening teeth by keeping clean and smooth surfaces that do not lodge food.
Eliminates bad breath
Preventing gum infections caused by harmful bacteria in the mouth

Expert tip

It doesn't reverse the effects of tooth decay, but it's a great supplemental therapy to reduce the bacterial count in the mouth thereby decreasing the likelihood of decay and other dental and systemic diseases.

The only disclaimer we would want to put in is

Do not ingest or swallow the oil in all your enthusiasm and,
Don't skip brushing and flossing. Oil pulling should never replace routine dental visits and traditional home oral care.

While oil pulling can't change your life or make you never need to go to a dentist again -try it for yourself, if it reduces your chances of decay and maybe even helps you ace your next dental visit with no new cavities.

We say thumbs up! pull away!

Please try this safe and natural practice and let us know how you find it in the comments section.

How Toothache and Headache Are Related?

MDS
Dentist, Delhi
How Toothache and Headache Are Related?

One of the main reasons of a severe headache is a prolonged toothache. Toothaches are extremely painful and can prevent you from enjoying your food. It becomes difficult to speak if toothache is unbearable.

Causes of Toothache:

  1. Tooth decay.

  2. Tooth fracture resulting from an accident.

  3. A painful infection at the root of your teeth or your gums. This is known as tooth abscess.

  4. Chewing gum continuously and grinding the teeth.

How does toothache cause headache?

Sometimes, a tooth becomes very inflamed and since the nerve endings are connected to the brain, this, in turn makes the pain travel to different parts of your head. Generally, people with bad cavities or caries have major headaches and migraines.

The inside of a tooth consists of a pulp. This pulp can get infected. If this tooth happens to lie in the upper jaw, then the pain is transferred to the head which can cause a severe headache.

Headaches can also be caused by TMJD (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction). This usually occurs spreading from the face, jawline and neck right up to the head. In extreme cases, the jaws might be locked up and it makes clicking or grinding noises. Misalignment of the teeth can be a cause by TMJD which in turn affects the head greatly.

Treatments:

  1. If you are detected with TMJD, your jaws need to be healed, first thing you should do is to visit an expert dentist in order to get the underlying cause of toothache treated. It is always recommended to get a proper treatment started, do not emphasize the use of self-medications.
  2. If the headache persists due to toothache, it is advisable to take a painkiller as prescribed by your dentist.
  3. Use an ice pack or a towel dipped in cold icy water, and hold it against the area of toothache. Do not put ice directly on your tooth as it might increase the pain ten folds due to tooth sensitivity.
  4. You can also apply numbing gel so that your tooth stops hurting. This in turn, will make your headache reduce.
  5. Toothache is also caused by small amounts of food which get stuck inside your teeth or between your gums, so it is necessary to clean your teeth thoroughly and floss it regularly to avoid toothache.
  6. Avoid chocolates and sweets. If you still get a cavity, you should visit your dentist immediately.
  7. Dental abscess also causes headache. In this situation, a root canal treatment is recommended.

Stronger gums keeps your teeth stronger life long.

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
Stronger gums keeps your teeth stronger life long.
Brush your teeth twice daily but this is not sufficient it is must to massage your gums after brushing and after each meals. As gums are living tissue when you massage your gums the blood circulation improves and the adoption to teeth becomes better and also soft food remnants which has penetrated after having meals would come out this will not let bacteria growth and prevent gums from inflammation otherwise the food remnants which continues to build up the deposit called plaque which can lead to gingivitis later advance to periodontis wherein the inner supporting bone is destroyed by bacterial deposit surrounding the gum and bone thus weakening the teeth. This bones are shockabsorber as in vehicle's they take up the pressure of chewing food. As you do service to your vehicles similarly this is a daily service in your mouth thus massage your gums after brushing and after each meals you will never have bleeding gums or any kind of chronic infection around gums and teeth, thus teeth remains stronger may be life long. Good oral hygiene means maintains good overall health and keeps your other systemic disease undercontrol.

White Patches on Teeth - Causes and Management

Certified Implantologist, Aesthetic , BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
White Patches on Teeth - Causes and Management

White patches on teeth are formed due to many reasons. There are many factors contributing to this. The appearance of the white patches is just like tiny white patches or spots randomly here and there on the teeth. They look odd and may give an impression of poor health and hygiene.

The causes of white patches on the teeth

White patches are formed on the teeth for the following common reasons:

  • If the teeth are ill formed during development and more calcium is released than required during the development stages, then the excess calcium gets deposited on the teeth as the white patches. You may see them as spots which many be light in color or flashy white.
  • Fluorosis is another common factor, which causes the white patches. This occurs in childhood. During the developing years, if the child's teeth get an excess supply of fluorides, then the white patches develop on the teeth.
  • Mineral depletion is another cause for the white patches. This happens mostly for loss of calcium. If calcium is scarce, then the small white spots are developed on teeth, and the problem is referred to as hypocalcification.
  • If you had been wearing braces for years, and didn't take care of teeth around the braces, then also white spots may develop when you take off the braces.

The various ways of treating the white spots
While the damage is done due to hypocalcification in developmental stages or due to excess fluorides in the developing years can't be reversed, but the appearance can definitely be taken care of. The management is done as follows:

  • Tooth bleaching is an option. The bleach brings uniformity in the teeth color and therefore, conceals the discoloration.
  • Air abrasion is another process where tiny crystal particles are blown towards the patches of calcium deposits, and this depletes the calcium. The removal of excess calcium brings a balance in teeth color.
  • If there are dentures or gaps formed in the teeth after removal of calcium deposits, then a filling will be done to add to the portion to bring natural color balance and smoothness.
  • Tooth capping and porcelain veneer can be added or crowned on tooth so that complete concealing is done of the white spots; this is done when in no other way the visible spots can be managed.

Prevention is better than cure and therefore, practicing dental hygiene and oral care is the best way to prevent the problem. Also a periodic dental checkup has to be done in every six months.

I had a tooth extracted a couple of months back. Now a bridge has to be made. Kindly suggest that should the bridge be only of porceline or can have a metallic component also be.

Dear - good evening - it depends upon what you want, if front teeth or teeth coming in a smile and you want that her smile should look great - then all ceram (porcelain only) or otherwise porcelain fused to metal can also be used. It all depends upon what type and quality of work you want and how they should last - of course all porcelain (metaless) lasts almost double that of porcelain fused to metal. And metaless almosts costs 2 to 3 times the metal fused to ceramics.
