Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.

Suicidal Ideas

Suicidal Ideas

Its very common to have suicidal ideas while you are depressed. This is time you must go to a psychiatrist and take medications. Simple advice won't be useful at this level. Simple counselling wont lead to any wonder if you are harbouring suicidal thoughts. Never neglect in this stage as you can save yourself or the one you love.

Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

I am 26 year old and my problem is whenever I listen criticize about me I feel very nerves and uncomfortable along with my confidence also lost. How can I make my reputation and self confidence?

Ph. D - Psychology, Professional Certified Coach
Psychologist, Ahmedabad
For most people it is difficult to listen to their criticism. Also in our culture everyone has some suggestion or advice about how we shall go about certain things. Some people will not even think about how other person will feel. They usually do not even think about your feelings and the fact that you get hurt. If you get hurt they will again criticize you for that. That is the cycle which keeps going. Now, is there anything that you could do to change them and stop them to criticize you? the answer is no. You can not change anyone. Only thing you can change is how do you respond to these kind of situation and people. Right now you are not only feeling uncomfortable and nervous but that is also affecting your self confidence. Now this is something you could work on. Ask yourself, if anything is possible, how would you like to behave and feel when people criticize you? you may realize that perhaps these people care for you, or may be they see lot of potential within you and want you to do even better. So take the advice with openness and positivity and it could only boost your self confidence. If the criticism is done with bad intention to make you feel bad and low. Then please my dear friend learn to ignore it because if you do feel bad then the other person is winning and would keep doing the same thing over and over again just for fun or winning. But if they see that you are not affected by their comments and you keep doing what you feel right, sooner or later they will start respecting you and their behavior will change towards you. Now to begin with you may pre - decide what will you tell yourself or what kind of support system you will come up with to handle the situation where you will not fall into the old trap of being nervous and loose your confidence. If you need help in coming up with something suitable for you. Hope this helps, wishing you very best,

Hello I would suggest that you continue the medicines. It takes some time however after that you will be able to experience significant improvement. Also most likely your doctor will decrease and stop fee medicines in due course. As far as counselling is concerned, it's usually quite helpful. If you felt that you didn't benefit from it, you should share this thought with your doctor who would make changes to make it better for you. Finally I would advise you to complete the course of treatment so that any chances of relapse becomes minimal. Good luck.

Hello lybrate-user, at your age one should eat lots of seasonal vegetables, seasonal fruits (stick to the permitted fruits list if you're diabetic), sproted lentils and moderate amount of lean protein, like eggs, paneer, tofu, soya bean and lentils. Red meat should not be consumed for more than two times a week and consumption of deep-fried, oily, very spicy and food items with high quantities of grains should be avoided. Add exercise to your daily routine and have plenty of fluids. Ruminating constantly means thinking about negative past events again and again.

Hi lybrate-user, Low self-esteem is seeing yourself as inadequate, unacceptable, unworthy, unlovable, and/or incompetent. These beliefs create negative, self-critical thoughts that affect your behaviour and your life choices, often lowering your self-esteem even further. Using the tools of mindfulness, you can learn to look at situations, other people and yourself objectively, without the negative influence of the past and with the awareness that you always have a choice. Live in the moment When you are focused on the moment, you can choose your actions consciously and wisely, unaffected by the hurts of your past and unconcerned by worries or hopes about the future. Develop awareness When we’re aware, we can recognise how we are responding and reacting to our own fears, creating a moment between our emotions and our actions. We can then choose to respond in a healthier way. Write in a journal Many of our thoughts and feelings are locked in our subconscious mind and writing can help to bring them into our awareness. Writing about the way we feel and think can help to separate negative ideas about ourselves from the truth of who we really are. Be non-judgemental When we approach our lives non-judgementally, we simply accept ourselves, our experiences, our failures and successes and other people just as they are, neither good or bad, without pride or shame. Stay connected to yourself Mindfulness can help you to develop a sense of connection to yourself and reduce your people-pleasing ways by allowing you to stop the autopilot thinking and behaviour that keeps you jumping to please others without thinking of your own needs. Practice mindful meditation Meditation just means letting go of the racing thoughts in your mind and accepting that those thoughts, feelings and beliefs are transient, rather than parts of yourself. Take a few moments every day to simply be still, focus on your breathing and watch your worries drift away like clouds. Participate in your own life Mindfulness encourages us to become active and assertive in creating our own lives. Awareness of your thoughts and choosing your responses to them enables you to take action and participate in your own life. Develop a beginner’s mind When you have a beginner’s mind, you look at things as if you are seeing them for the first time, with openness, eagerness and freedom from expectation. You can see things in a new light, rather than automatically responding with the same old patterns of behaviour. Let go Non-attachment, or letting go, is the goal of mindfulness. When you let go of what you think you should do or who you should be, you can trust yourself and choose what’s right for you. Show compassion toward yourself You deserve love as much as anyone else. Self-compassion simply means providing yourself with the love, safety and acceptance you need. Regards,
