Reasons for lactating when not recently pregnant can range from hormone imbalances to medication side effects to other health conditions. The most common cause of breast milk production is an elevation of a hormone produced in the brain called prolactin. Galactorrhea’s most common symptom is one or both breasts producing excessive milk. The condition is most common in women, but can also happen to men and newborn babies. Other symptoms include: leaking from nipples that happens at random enlargement of breast tissue missed or irregular periods loss of or lowered sex drive nausea acne abnormal hair growth headaches trouble with vision Galactorrhea has a wide variety of different causes, and in some cases, the cause is hard to pinpoint. Unpeeled Apples - 6 Reasons They Are Really Good For You!

PG Diploma in Nutrition & Diabeties, M.Sc.in Food & Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Ghaziabad
Unpeeled Apples - 6 Reasons They Are Really Good For You!

The famous adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” has given apples a lot of popularity. If you are visiting someone who is ill, the safest fruit to take would be apples. It is also one of the first foods to be given to an infant. It is also known for its soothing effect on the stomach. Be it weight watchers or recovering patients, apple is what everybody reaches out to.

People, however, have developed a misconception that the peel of the apple contains chemicals and should be peeled off before consumption. Not many realize that the maximum benefits of an apple are realized only when it is eaten with the peel.

Read on to know more about eating a whole apple versus a peeled one.

  1. Fiber: If fruits are known for their fiber, then peeling the apple takes away more than half the fiber content from it. An apple with peel gives about 4 g of fiber, while without it gives about 1.5 to 2 g. That is almost 50%, which definitely is not worth throwing out.
  2. Vitamins and minerals: Apples are considered good sources of potassium and vitamins like C and A. Same as fiber, more than half the benefits are lost if the peel is removed. Since potassium goes a long way in keeping the heart healthy, wouldn't it be great to reap those benefits?
  3. Cancer-fighting agent: Apples contain triterpenoids, which are believed to either kill or control the growth of cancer cells. These again are concentrated in the peel, and peeling an apple takes away this benefit.
  4. Fat burner: The skin of the apple contains ursolic acid, which helps in fighting obesity by burning more fat, and peeling it takes away the fat-burning benefits of an apple. This also helps in improving sugar and glucose levels and also aids weight loss.
  5. Antioxidants: Apples contain a compound called quercetin which helps in controlling memory loss and dementia. This again is concentrated in the skin, which should, therefore, be retained. The bioactive substances including polyphenols and pectins are also lost when the peel is removed.
  6. Eases breathing: The same quercetin also helps in easing breathing and improves lung function. This is especially important in people who have chronic lung issues like asthma.

One point of contention here is that most people peel the apple as it is not healthy and full of wax coating which gives it a fresh look. Organic apples are therefore preferred compared to the glossy ones. Further, you can dip your fruits in drinking water for 15-20 minutes to enjoy it without worrying about superficial add-on chemicals. When nicely washed, these apples are devoid of wax and also pack in all the required nutrients.

Quick tip for festivals

Try to have a fruit smoothie made especially from unpeeled apple with little curd water and honey, avoid banana. It is a perfect way to boost your energy during festivities while keeping your calories in check.  So, go ahead and eat them to your heart’s content. Remember to keep the peel on though! If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.

Urinary Infection - Ways It Can Be Treated!

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Nephrologist, Noida
Urinary Infection - Ways It Can Be Treated!

UTI, as urinary tract infections are often referred to, is one of the most common infections. In women, especially, every 1 in 2 women is affected by an UTI. The urinary tract starts from the kidneys to the urethra where urine is passed out. Given the rich concentration of minerals and toxic wastes, it is highly prone to multiple infections. Whichever part of the tract is affected, the symptoms and treatment are mostly the same.

Read on to know some of the most common symptoms and treatment options for these.

Symptoms

  1. A burning sensation with urination
  2. Pain with urination
  3. Burning sensation or pain in the urethra or vagina
  4. Frequent urge to urinate, though not much urine is passed out
  5. Sense of incomplete emptying of the bladder
  6. Pain in the lower back on the sides of the spine
  7. Change in the urine characteristics color, smell, or appearance

Causes

Most urinary tract infections are bacterial in nature, and these could find their way into the body through multiple ways. The most common is through the urethra, which could happen due to unclean toilet habits.
Women especially are advised to wipe the urethra after each toilet visit. The bacteria from the feces can also enter the urethra due to close proximity. Use of unclean public toilets is another reason for UTIs

Treatment:

UTIs are very common infections and though there is nothing to worry, it should be cleared completely.

  1. Antibiotic course to get rid of the infection. Though you begin to feel better, the complete course should be completed to clear the infection.
  2. Following culture testing to ensure the infection is cleared
  3. Improve water intake to get rid of the toxins
  4. Fever and pain to be controlled with medications
  5. Healthy hygiene habits to ensure clearing of infection

Follow up is needed with the Physician or the Nephrologist while having medication or there are chances of recurrent UTI.  The treatment for recurrent UTI can go for more than 3-8 weeks.

Prevention:

Recurrent UTIs is a common problem, and the following can help prevent.

  1. Ensure complete emptying of the bladder
  2. Drink adequate water
  3. Safe toilet habits, including before and after sex
  4. Comfortable and clean underwear to prevent infection. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

Figs have a higher overall mineral profile than any other common fruit or vegetable. They are particularly high in calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc, key nutrients for a healthy pregnancy. 2. The high potassium content of figs may help to control blood pressure and therefore, the hypertension associated with preeclampsia, a dangerous pregnancy condition. 3. The mineral content of figs closely resembles that of human breast milk! 4. Figs have the highest fiber content of any common fruit. Rich in both insoluble and soluble fiber, figs really help to mitigate the constipation so common during pregnancy. 5. Figs contain a proteolytic enzyme that also aids in digestion, which is naturally slowed during pregnancy. 6. Figs are highly alkaline, and therefore alkalizing, which has been shown to help curb cravings. This may help control those less-than-healthy urges that can sabotage a healthy pregnancy diet. 7. Figs are high in vitamin B6, which has long been thought to be beneficial in alleviating morning sickness. 8. Even the leaves of figs are therapeutic: ingesting them has been shown to reduce and even eliminate the need for insulin in diabetic patients. Therefore, ingesting them may help to control or avoid a case of gestational diabetes. Furthermore, this ability to balance blood sugar levels should help to relieve a whole host of symptoms – from morning sickness to mood swings. 9. Dried figs contain significant amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to the optimal development of the fetus. Consuming ample Omega-3’s during pregnancy is also associated with a lower incidence of pre-term labor and premature delivery. 10. Psoralens, a chemical found in figs, has been used to treat many skin pigmentation problems and may be beneficial in preventing melasma, the “mask of pregnancy”. So now that you’re convinced of the amazing nutritional power of figs…what are the best ways to eat them? - See more at: http://www.bodyenlightenment.me/blog/2008/08/pregnant-women-get-figgy-with-it/#sthash.Me8YBuST.dpuf

Hi. I am 31 year female having problem in conceiving. I have balanced translocation of 2 and 4 with large break point...
Hi, The balanced translocation between 2 and 4 is very rare. Normally for any parental translocation infertility, miscarriages and baby getting affected are slightly more than the normal population. The Genetic counselling doctor will be able to give you the details. If they predict that the baby will be affected then you have to go for donor egg with husband sperm IVF program. If they predict only some percentage will be affected you can rry IVF with pre implantation genetic analysis where they put only the genetically healthy embryos into your uterus after IVF. Please consult a good geneticist in your area and then consult an IVF specialist.

Patients of Diabetes have many fears pertaining to conception, pregnancy and effects of Diabetes on their newborn children. I would explain some things relating to diabetes and pregnancy to delineate precautions and expectations that a diabetes patient should have at the time of pregnancy. Diabetes has no particular effect on the ability to conceive - diabetics achieve pregnancy just like people without diabetes. But If you have diabetes, keeping your blood glucose as close to normal as possible before and during your pregnancy is important to stay healthy and have a healthy baby. The targets for sugar control that are normally expected without pregnancy are different from the sugar targets which are expected during pregnancy. The high sugar levels are maximally dangerous during the first 3 months of pregnancy because it is during this duration that baby's organ formation happens. Moreover, the choice of medicine that a doctor would make during pregnancy is based on the side effects of medicines and some medicines are generally avoided by doctors in pregnancy. More so, the most natural and easy medicine for Diabetes is INSULIN and any good diabetologist/endocrinologist would be prescribing more insulin during pregnancy than otherwise. I can be reached by anyone through private consults for specific information on their queries!
