What You Can Do to Manage Your Glaucoma

MD in Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Delhi

Dr. Rajeev Sudan talks about Glaucoma.

Hi, I am Dr. Rajeev. I am a consultant in Glaucoma Arch perfunctory surgery and Cataracts. Today I am going to talk about Glaucoma- a very important health issue. We must understand first, what Glaucoma is? Glaucoma is a condition in which the intraocular pressure of the eye doesn’t commensurate with its normal functioning.

Let’s talk about intraocular pressure and what intraocular pressure is? I’ll show you the diagram, the cut section of the eye. As you can see that eye is a hollow organ and so is to maintain its shape there has to be some intraocular pressure inside. This pressure is formed by the constant secretion of the fluid called aqueous and there is a constant ingress and egress which matches and maintains an intraocular pressure within a narrow range. Glaucoma is a condition in which the pressure of the eye increases and this increase in pressure effects the blood circulation to the optic nerve and as a result there is an optic nerve damage. This is how the vision of the eye is lost. This condition is called as Kala Motia. This is called Kala Motia because it’s a condition which silently destroys the vision and patient doesn’t come to know about it.

Glaucoma is a condition which doesn’t have any specific symptoms. There can be non-specific symptoms like heaviness of the eyes, frequent change of glasses, colored hallows round the eye, difficulty in moving around in dim light and in extreme cases you may have difficulty in walking around and missing objects in the periphery of eye. Glaucoma is a condition which can be hereditary if your parents or any of your siblings, sisters or cousins have suffered from Glaucoma then you have an increased high risk of developing Glaucoma late in your life.

If you are 45 and you have a family stay of Glaucoma, you must consult your ophthalmologist and get a screening for Glaucoma. The screen test involves testing your intraocular pressure. If the pressure is persistently beyond 28mm of mercury and the ocular findings are suggestive of Glaucoma, then we order certain special tests. The treatment is indicated if your pressure is persistently high and your visual feels or null fiber analysis shows abnormality. Open angle Glaucoma is a condition which is imminently treated with medication. We have very effective medicines available which can control intraocular pressure.

The surgery is needed only in cases where medicines cannot control intraocular pressure. In case you need any further information you can contact me through Lybrate or can contact me online through Lybrate.

Hello. There is no medication or food for improving eye sight or to get rid of glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try a. Contact lens b. Lasik laser as your age is now 21 years so your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy. Lasik is a very easy and painless procedure. If you want to get rid of glasses then go for lasik.

If he is using laptops/mobiles this should be one of the reason. Sleepless night/night-watching/eye-infection/fever could also cause such problems. Give him belladonna 30 - one dose at the time of headache when required. If no relief then an mri brain needs to be done. For further queries get back to me.

success rate is very good if properly selected cases are done with good machinery ,the success rates are close to 99% Lasik is a simple laser procedure which changes the shape of the cornea so that the light rays fall on the retina properly. It is a painless procedure. It is a day care procedure does not require any injections, does not require admission, you can simply resume your duties in 2 days. Cost varies from centre to centre. Side effects are usually limited to dryness of eyes for few months. We can do lasik anytime after age of 18 years. You need to undergo proper prelasik checkup to decide whether lasik is safe for you or not

Cataract - How to Reduce Your Risk?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology, Diploma in Ophthalmology , Fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment
Ophthalmologist, Ahmedabad
Cataract - How to Reduce Your Risk?

We all have only a pair of eyes, so it is imperative that one understands the importance of vision. When the normally clear lens of one’s eye becomes clouded, the condition is known as cataract. A person suffering from cataract finds his vision to be hazy, discoloured and blurred somewhat like looking outside a frosted window. It causes difficulty in reading, driving a vehicle or seeing the familiar expression on a loved one’s face.
It is a silent killer of vision and initially magnification and lighting in addition to vision aids are helpful, but eventually a surgery becomes imminent.

The exact reason for cataract are debatable, but one can take measures to protect oneself, boost one’s eyes’ defence mechanisms, and protect them from harmful elements. Ultra violet (UV) light has been correlated with incidents of cataract and has a damaging effect on one’s eyes. This requires one to wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays when one is outdoors. Smoking also increases the risk of cataract thus giving one another reason to stay away from active as well as passive smoking.

One must include antioxidants as zeaxanthin, vitamin C, lutein and vitamin A in daily diet to counteract with the daily damage. The addition of a variety of fruits and vegetables to one’s diet ensures that one is getting many vitamins and nutrients. The health of the eyes can be maintained with fruits and vegetables as they have many antioxidants. One must go for eye examination to ophthalmologists in a time bound and regular manner so to detect the onset of cataract at the earliest.

One must maintain a healthy weight by reducing the calorie intake. Excessive consumption of alcohol also increases the risk of cataract. If one is suffering with other health conditions like hypertension and diabetes, it becomes all the more important that one must follow the treatment plan diligently. The exposure to ionizing radiation like X-rays and cancer treatment via chemotherapy increase the risk of cataract.

Cataract develops when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up one’s eye's lens while some cataract are due to inherited genetic disorders causing other health problems. In some cases eye conditions, medical conditions such as diabetes, long term usage of steroids, trauma or past eye surgery also leads to cataracts.

As one ages, the eye lenses become less flexible, less transparent and thicker. Ageing causes break down and clumping together of tissues within the eye lens leading to clouding small areas within the lens. As the cataract continues to develop, the clouding becomes denser and involves a greater part of the lens. Thus, although one cannot prevent cataract, but if one takes the above mentioned steps, then he can reduce the risks of getting it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ophthalmologist.

I have problems in my eye. Iam not see clearly, when I study come out my tears. What is the solution of it?
Hello, get your eyes tested from an opthalmologist. Include the following for getting better vision: vitamins a, c, e, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. Dha is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for strengthening eye muscles: -begin by partially closing your eyes; the lids should only be halfway shut. After holding for 10-15 seconds, close your eyes very slowly. Take a few deep breaths to increase oxygen in the blood. -warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. -hold a pen at arm's length. Focus your gaze on the tip of the pen. Bring the pen closer to your nose at a slow and steady pace. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times. -concentrate your vision on the tip of your nose. Then shift your gaze to an object further away, either at arm's length or 20 feet away. Then shift your eyes back to the tip of your nose. Repeat this exercise 10 times. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Begin by look to the left-most position (without moving your head) and hold to stretch your eye muscles. Hold for 5 counts. Blink and return your gaze back to look straight in front of you. Then look to the right-most position with your gaze and hold for 5 counts. Repeat 3 times, blinking between each hold. Then, repeat this exercise looking up and then down. Do not forget about blinking. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Look up and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look up to and to your left for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your left for 5 seconds. -one helpful way to do this is to imagine that you are looking at the number 12 on a clock. Then, follow the numbers around the clock with your eyes. Repeat going the other way around the clock. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Medication: take homoeopathic medicine which will help you in preventing first and then reducing the power of your eyes (if the eye power is less). Take physostigma 6/ thrice daily for 1 month and instill euphrasia eye drops twice a day. Thereafter, revert back for further guidance.
