MS - ENT,MBBS

I totally lost my voice my throat is paining and swelled I can not raise my voice so please suggest me medicine.
No speaking at all over the next 36 hours Use sign language, written words. Steam inhalation  3 /4 times a day through mouth. Be careful while taking Steam. Antibiotic will also be needed . Paracetamol will help reduce pain. Have soft warm food. Is there any pain in throat any cold? Then you may also need antibiotics  Take a multivitamin tablet for a few days. Chicken soup if you are non vegetarian can be included in your meals. Fruits and veggies are a must  too. Al this together can help. But the first two are most important.

Sciatica Pain - What Are The Causes Behind?

MD, FIPP
Pain Management Specialist, Kolkata
Sciatica Pain - What Are The Causes Behind?

Sciatica pain arises from the sciatic nerve which is the single largest nerve in our body. It consists of individual nerve roots, which branching out from the lower back of the spine to the back of each leg and combining together forms the sciatic nerve. The origination of the sciatic pain lies in the lower back of the body and radiates down the buttock to the sciatic nerve.

Causes of the sciatica pain

  1. ArthritisIf an individual is diagnosed with arthritis, then he or she can expect a throbbing pain or numbness down till the leg.
  2. Herniated discAnother cause could be a herniated disc in the lower back of the body.
  3. SpondylosisSpondylosis in the lower back would also be a reason for the development of the sciatica pain.
  4. PIVD/DISC bulge

Other causes are a spinal injury, diseased degenerative disc, infection on and around the lower back. The pain would worsen, if an individual is in an occupation where he or she has to stand or sit for hours at length. The lifting of heavy things would strain the sciatic nerves as well.

How to identify sciatica pain?
Sciatica pain varies from infrequent to a constant throbbing down the lower back. So initially it is difficult to detect whether it is sciatic pain or not. But when the constant pain in the lower back leads right down till the toes and foot, it is really time for an individual to get in touch with a doctor. The pain can give a burning sensation almost searing making it difficult for the person to stand up or walk properly. Along with the pain, one can feel fatigued. An involvement of the spinal cord is rare in the sciatic pain but is possible.

Treatment for sciatica pain
Sciatica can be treated in both surgical and non-surgical way. Surgical treatment is rare as sciatica tends to respond well with non-surgical treatments. If the pain continues for over a month despite treatment, surgical treatment will be considered. The non-surgical pain treatment would include physical exercises and oral medications along with natural treatment.

  1. Medications: Painkiller medications prescribed by the doctor can be used to reduce sciatica. Medicines like aspirin, non-steroidal or oral steroids can help reduce the pain.
  2. Steroid injection: Epidural steroid injection acts faster as it is injected in the affected area, thus providing relief from the pain quickly.
  3. Exercise: Early morning exercises can be quite helpful.
  4. Percutaneous Endoscopic DiscectomyThe surgical treatment of Percutaneous endoscopic disc dissectomy constitutes a large part of interventional pain physicians and it has evolved considerably in terms of surgical technique and instrumentation. Percutaneous endoscopic discectomy is a relatively new technique for removing lumbar disc herniation. It involves using an endoscope to visualize the disc removal. The discectomy is performed through a posterolateral approach using specially developed instruments. The advantage of percutaneous endoscopic discectomy is that the disc is approached posterolaterally through the triangle of Kambin without the need for bone or facet resection thus preserving spinal stability. The procedure is day care and is done under local anaesthesia. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pain Management Specialist.

The key is to eat in moderation at regular intervals, and not to starve yourself. Start your day with a good and healthy breakfast like a cereal and milk combination for e. G oats/ dalia porridge with low fat milk or curd. Between your lunch and breakfast you can have a light mid-morning snack, i. E, a fruit perhaps, and follow this by a balanced meal in moderate quantity for lunch. Have plenty of vegetables which will keep you full and cut down on the amount of rice/ chapatis that you are having. Also cut down on your fat intake and reduce oil in cooking. Avoid fast food, junk food, sugary food and soft drinks. Along with this, do not forget to exercise regularly. For a detailed diet plan, click on private consultation.

Sorry to know about miscarriage hb levels are low, after miscarriage slightly low if it's first time, it's not necessary for it to happen again to be on safe side, get blood tested for uterine infections by TORCH test in blood which will show up 5 types of infections, some are fully treatable wait for results and don't conceive if results for infections are positive in the meantime build hemoglobin by eating green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits, grains of your liking, high protein diet of simple protein like milk and curd, eggs and simple non veg if you eat lots of vitamin C through citrus fruits like oranges and lemons fresh air as oxygen does help in building blood cleanse your system by taking a course of deworming tablets do visit your local doctors and do write back to clarify doubts if any good luck.

How much masturbation is normal in a week? And in a month? What is excessive masturbation?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
How much masturbation is normal in a week?
And in a month? What is excessive masturbation?
Daily once or twice is normal. Masturbation is a very healthy form of sexual outlet, do not feel guilty about it. Nearly 99% of men and more than 60% of women masturbate. It starts from adolescence and goes on in some people even till death. The pleasure (orgasm) from masturbation is said to be unique from sexual intercourse. In men, most of the liquid contains only water and some fructose and hormones. Hence it does not drain your energy. Many equate masturbation/ seminal fluid loss to lack of energy, impotency and so on. Many quacks, religious heads and pseudo healers also propagate the idea that masturbation is a disorder/ and wrongful behavior and instill fear on the mind of innocent men and women (we can see posters in train and bus stand, offering help for this behavior). Consult a psychiatrist, if you have excessive masturbation guilt or compulsive masturbation. Compulsive masturbation is when a person continues with frequent masturbation neglecting his/ her other work like education, job or social obligations. In fact masturbation reduces the sexual tension and helps focus on task at hand better.

I m suffering from chest pain. Sometimes its difficult to breathe. Will you help me out.

DAA, DNB
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
I m suffering from chest pain. Sometimes its difficult to breathe. Will you help me out.
Hi. I understand your concerns. You will need to undergo a detailed examination and investigations like chest x ray to look for infection. If it's normal then you will need to undergo pulmonary function test which is needed for diagnosis and also to assess severity of bronchitis based on which treatemnt can be started. Consult a pulmonologist for the same. Hope your questions were answered. Thanks.
