Common Vision Disorders in Children

M.S
Ophthalmologist, Ahmedabad
Common Vision Disorders in Children

Visual disorders are seen to develop in school going children and should be taken care of with utmost care as neglecting such disorders may affect their learning ability. They might find it hard to adjust and cope in school. Some of the common visual disorders which children are affected with are mentioned below. Read more to find out about them:

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Amblyopia is a medical condition in which an eye has developed poor vision. It is also known as 'Lazy Eye'. It occurs when the vision in one eye is significantly better than the other. Amblyopia occurs due to strabismus or misaligned eyes.

Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis or 'Pink Eye' occurs in children due to allergic reaction which is not contagious or due to bacterial or viral infections which are very contagious. If infected with conjunctivitis, it is advisable to stay at home to avoid spreading the infection.

Myopia
Myopia is also known as nearsightedness. In this condition, the cornea is steep and the rays of light fall in front of the retina. This leads closer objects to look clear but far off objects to look blurred.

Hyperopia
Hyperopia implies farsightedness. In this condition, the eye is shorter than normal hence the rays of light cannot focus clearly on the retina. This results in objects close at hand appear blurred. Reading a book or threading a needle becomes difficult.

Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a condition in which both near and far off images appear blurred. In this condition, the cornea which is naturally circular is stretched in either horizontal or vertical direction. Astigmatism can occur along with myopia or hyperopia.

Blocked tear duct
When the tear ducts are partially or completely obstructed, it hampers the drainage of tears and results in a chronically, watery infected eye. You are advised to consult an ophthalmologist if such a condition occurs.

Orbital Cellulitis
Cellulitis generally occurs due to an eyelid infection or an upper respiratory infection. Cellulitis includes swelling of the eyelids and fever. It is a serious medical condition and it is recommended to visit a doctor for consultation.

I am working in kitchen so the bowl of hot vegetable soop is drop with my hand and soop is coming in my eyes.

BHMS

Hi, immediately hold normal tap water in your palm, now bring your eye closer to it and dip your one eye in that water, shut and open your eyelids often. Do the same with your other eye. Continue flushing out the eye with water till the time you visit an opthalmologist. Splashing running water from a sink is second best option. (remember the water shouldn't be too warm or too cold) instill 2 drops of homoeopathic euphrasia eye drops in both the eyes 3 times a day. Give your eyes proper rest to get recovered.

Continuously reading small print without proper light should be avoided. Smart phone may cause strain. Don't expose your eyes to extreme sunny weather of cold windy weather. Don't be closer to people with eye infections as you may contact the infection. Get your eyes tested for any vision problem. Hello, the refractive power in your eyes is quite high. With such high refractive errors, it is bound to cause symptoms of blurring of vision, headache, discomfort, etc. You could consider refractive surgery though I am not sure whether it would be feasible for you or not. Also, even with refractive surgery, it is usually not possible to get rid of the complete error in cases of high refractive errors. Operations done to remove the refractive error (power) of the eyes are known as refractive surgery. There are certain basic criteria that most patients need to fulfill before they can safely undergo refractive surgery. To enumerate, they are: (1) stability of refraction: the power of the eyes should have become stable for a period of 1.5 years minimum without any change. (2) curvature of the cornea should be tested by a technique which is known as topography. (3) thickness of the cornea should be measured by a test known as pachymetry. The minimum thickness required is 550 microns. (4) dilated retina evaluation: this is one of the most important tests that should be performed by a trained retina specialist. This test helps in detection of any offensive lesion on the central or peripheral retina. In case of any retinal abnormality, these should be treated before undergoing the surgery for number reduction. (5) there should be no pre-existent corneal abnormality. (example: corneal scar, opacity, defect, etc.) another important suggestion is that whenever you go for the assessment (the above mentioned tests), you should discontinue the use of contact lenses at least 4 weeks prior to the assessment. The reason for this being that use of contact lens temporarily alters the contour of the cornea. It takes around 3-4 weeks for the restoration of the original corneal contour after removal of the contact lens. Another important point is that you, as a patient, should be compliant to put post operative medication in your eyes for at least 2 months. There is bound to be some discomfort, watering, foreign body sensation, pain after the surgery in most cases-you should be ready to tolerate that. A leave from work for 7-10 days after the surgery should be generally sufficient. Last but not the least, you should set realistic expectations from this surgery. Though extremely rare, there is a remote possibility that the surgery may need to be repeated. Also, the need for subsequent treatment for the eye may be required. Thus, you should be compliant enough to trust and follow your eye specialist. In case you have any other queries, feel free to contact me. Hope my suggestions help you, take care, regards.

I am having the issue of Retinitis pigmentosa from last 7 years. Please let me know by any way i can rectify this issue.?

Phaco Development Program, Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology, DNB Ophtalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Mysore
Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic disorder and it cannot be rectified. There are gene therapies in research but have not yet come to clinical trial stage. For now you'll have to use glasses or if vision is very poor then you have to use low vision aids. Also get all family members evaluated.

I am 42 years old and taking psychiatric medicines sine last 10 years but still not feeling good. I have been taking multiple drugs for that, my doctor has said me that I am suffering with bipolar disorder, depression, etc. I need assistance. I am unable to do my routine work at office efficiently, forgets things, get irritated on pin pricks, doziness, After forgets the road routes and what happened earlier. Burning sensation in eyes, etc.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Since a psychiatrist has already diagnosed you as bipolar disorder, the information you are providing is not sufficient to either agree or disagree with what he has diagnosed. You need to have a second opinion if symptoms do not come to remission, since in bipolar in 6-8 weeks there is total remission with treatment.

Can slit lamp detect all types of nystagmus? Like" horizontal gaze nystagmus" vertical" gaze nystagmus" or mainly" latent nystagmus" accurately. Because to detect latent nystagmus one eye should be closed. But on slit lamp my one eye was not closed. How can I confirm that I have not latent nystagmus?

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
Hello lybrate-user. When you go for an eye check up, it involves checking the eye by various methods. One of these various methods is slit lamp examination. I am sure your eye specialist must have examined the eyes using other techniques as well. Thus, to detect latent nystagmus, it is not necessary to check on the slit lamp. It can be done using simple torch light evaluation also.
