I've been smoking since 2010, its like an average of 2 cigarettes per day. So how badly it might have affected my lungs and body? So if I quit smoking now, will it be OK?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Quit right now and you will do a lot of good for your life. Even one cigarette is harmful. The best way to quit is to know more about the ill-effects of tobacco. The knowledge is astounding and scary. That information itself should help you to want to quit. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. There are more than 4000 harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke!!! You will need to stop smoking with immediate effect. Then you need to identify why you smoke: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need, for a little while. You may take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here?s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world ? you can start the cessation all over again. Don?t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

You can become whatever you want if you believe in yourself. You have an anger-related depression that will make it difficult to concentrate. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. As regards the concentration you are sure to have hormonal imbalances which may impact your memory because of the chemical but also the distractions that come with it; together with depression I can imagine your problems. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.

Dear lybrate-user. Welcome to lybrate. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. Take care.

You probably have a mixture of depressive and anxiety symptoms. They can be addressed through both psychological and medication means. It is best you see a psychiatrist for further assessment.

I am engaged with my boy friend and getting married soon. I have 10 years of relationship with my boy friend. We both love each other so much. But he is very aggressive . He abuses me . I am addicted to him badly. Whta shayd I do.

MBBS, MD (AIIMS, Gold Medalist), Diploma in CBT (UWS, Glasgow)

You must learn to be assertive. Learn to say no when it is needed. This does not mean that you are disregarding him. Each person is made of many different aspects, rejecting a small part does not mean rejecting the entire person. So let him know that you love him dearly but you cant stand the abuse and aggression. Give him more attention when he is being nice to you. ignore him when he becomes abusive. It is important not to offend him or confront him as a person but to convey to him that your objection is to a particular act of his. You have every right to do it.

Dear , anxiety disorder symptoms appear to be concentrated on your upper torso. You may feel chest tightness, pain, shoulder and neck pain, palpitation etc. When the symptoms are intense, it could be panic attack. You need to address the underlying anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder is usually treated with the help of psychotherapy and life style changes. I request you to contact me for psychotherapy treatment and cure. Take care.

I have been addicted to smoking from last two years. How can I get out from this addiction can you pls suggest me.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear lybrate user, you may need a bit of willpower to stop smoking permanently. You could easily abstain yourself from smoking during the initial 2-3 days. But after few days of abstaining from smoking you will feel a strong craving to smoke a cigarette whenever you face any tense situation. Here lies your real test. You will need a lot of willpower to resist that craving & face any tense situation without the help of nicotine. However, you can take homoeopathic mother tincture daphne indica q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. This medicine will help to reduce your craving for nicotine. To minimise the bad-effects of smoking take one single bulb garlic everyday at morning before brushing your teeth.

Cheer up. You should make friends and connect with them so that you don't feel isolated. Also don't lose focus from your studies/course currently you are pursuing. Living independently is great quality to develop. I am sure it will make you a better person for your future life.

Hello Doctor, I'm 43 years old since 7 months I am taking 90 ml to 180 ml of whisky daily due to some financial issue. Please advise.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You see this is exactly the problem: when you have a financial issue you are spending more to drink than to save! this level of drinking can only drown your misery but do nothing to solve it. Therefore, the issue is not getting resolved but your finances will get drained and you will feel more miserable. In fact, you need to do more to earn the money or to reduce expenditure, at least. Please quit and do it now. As time goes by, you will start drinking more because nothing is happening to sort out your issues. You need to be responsible, be respectful, and be functional always. In line with that, it is advisable to quit alcohol and do something responsible instead. The set up is for you to become an alcoholic gradually and you will not know when that happens or when it becomes too late to turn the clock back.

Respected sir/mam Generally I do not remember any dreams of the sleep but from few days I am able to recall each and every flashback generally of the morning time and the problem is that they are. Too bad (like fighting someone.) due to that I have a headache in the morning and moreover my confidence has loosen up to a large extent. please help me out what should I do or what are the causes of all these.

Dear lybrate-user. These dream related incidents are not real at all and they have nothing to do with your present, past or future. Therefore you should ignore them. Many people do complain about as you are complaining now and therefore, your problem is never mysterious or only yours. Just ignore those dreams. Take care.

There is a psychiatrist who told me to take etilaam 0.5 twice a day as I'm suffering from generalized S.A. But I don't want to take this medicine regularly because of negative reviews as these medicines are very addictive, occurs memory loss problem too. So my query is that can I take etizolam medicine whenever it is required (like in interviews and group discussion ).is it safe to take this medicine before going to stressful situation? Thanks in advance.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Vijayawada
It is advisable to take the medicine as prescribed by your treating doctor as the treating doctor has assessed your condition face to face. But, also try considering non pharmacological means like some counseling sessions which would help you control your anxiety on long run, which would further enhance your confidence levels. Your doubts are genuine as the medicine has addiction potential when used more than 4 weeks. So,again discuss the same issue with your treating doctor.
