Premature Graying - Understanding the Causes Behind it?

Premature Graying - Understanding the Causes Behind it?

Premature gray hairs haven’t spared even celebrities. An American reality television personality, Kylie Kristen Jenner at the age of 18 has discovered her first gray hair. Her belief is that it may be hereditary as her elder sister also experienced gray hair at the age of 20. The premature graying of hair has become quite common now and is increasing at an alarming rate.

Insight on Premature Graying

Colour producing cells produce pigments. If it stops, your hair becomes gray. Ideally, it’s a natural process with age, where the pigment production declines.

Ideal Age of Graying Hairs

Usually, Asians develop gray hair during the late 30s, while whites develop it in mid 30s. So, by the time you reach 50, you have enough of gray hairs. If anyone experiences graying prior to this age, it can be declared as premature.

Causes

Although reasons are not clearly known, common causes could be genetics, smoking habits, your diet and vitamins.

  • Hormonal imbalance, be it hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, may lead to ageing.

  • Another reason could be your level of bone density as well as it is related to your activity level, weight, height as well as ethnicity.

  • Deficiency of vitamin B-12 leads to pernicious anemia, where production of red blood cells decreases. This leads to thinning and graying of hairs.

  • Deficiency of vitamin C and E reduce antioxidants in the body, thereby, increasing free radical activity. Hence, ageing process accelerates.

  • Deficiency of vitamins B5 and B9 also accelerates the ageing process as these help in the utilisation of protein in the body. Lack of vitamin B9 leads to decrease in the number of red blood cells and deoxyribonucleic acid.

  • Lack of zinc and copper could also lead to graying of hair.

  • Pituitary or thyroid gland problems can cause premature graying, which can be corrected with measures.

  • Smoking is one of the sources of free development of radicals in your body, which cause oxidative stress. This may lead to decline in the pigmenting capacity and melanin, which result in graying of hairs.

  • Consumption of junk food and processed food may increase oxidative stress and deposition of Advanced Glycation End products. This accelerates aging.

Lifestyle plays an important role in one’s life. It’s all about your appearance. Graying of hair symbolises ageing irrespective of your actual age. Of course, if it’s due to genetic factors, one cannot help it other than experience it. However, other factors are avoidable and treatable. All you need to do it eat right, have beauty sleep and avoid unwanted habits. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist and ask a free question.

My son is 17 yrs. Old. He is suffering from severe atopic dermatitis since 3 yrs. Of his age. It has effected his eyes. His ige level is too high >2000. He is taking now psorid 100 mg. He is using diprovate, tacroz and moisture. His skin has become black. Now-a-days he doesn't want to go out. Though he is doing well in studies I am very much anxious for his allergic problem and future. Please suggest.

M. sc Psychology, BHMS
Homeopath, Hyderabad
I understood the severity of the c/o. Which effects your son's confidence levels. Rt now what he is taking itself shows the intensity. I suggest dont stop at a time all those medicines, but parallelly you can try homeopathy from an expert. N gradually based on imprvmnt those rx could b reduced dosage n potency wise. The dark discolouration all r the side effects of the present creams etc.

General Physician,
Mix one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice with one-half teaspoon of distilled water. Apply it on your skin using a cotton ball. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash your face with warm water. Lemon juice can dry out your skin, so apply some oil-free moisturizer afterward.

I am an employee who works for the whole day in front of the computer. Recently I am having an eye illness. I am little unable to notice the things in front me accurately. The whole things in front of me appears to be blur. There will not me any clear vision for me. I am feeling tensed about this problem. So please help me by your suggestions as early as possible.

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Hello- here are 10 easy steps you can take to reduce your risk of computer eye strain and other common symptoms of computer vision syndrome (cvs): get a comprehensive eye exam. 1. Use proper lighting. 2. Minimize glare. 3. Upgrade your display. 4. Adjust your computer display settings. 5. Blink more often. 6. Exercise your eyes. 8. Take frequent breaks. 9. Modify your workstation. If you need to look back and forth between a printed page and your computer screen, this can cause eye strain. Place written pages on a copy stand adjacent to the monitor. Light the copy stand properly. You may want to use a desk lamp, but make sure it doesn't shine into your eyes or onto your computer screen. Improper posture during computer work also contributes to computer vision syndrome. Adjust your workstation and chair to the correct height. Purchase ergonomic furniture to enable you to position your computer screen 20 to 24 inches from your eyes. The center of your screen should be about 10 to 15 degrees below your eyes for comfortable positioning of your head and neck. 10. Consider computer eyewear.

I am 5.5ft. And 18years old. Actually I want to increase my height at any cost.(as there is college and study pressure, I don't make time to exercise. So is it possible? If yes then how?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
We all are aware of the fact that our height increases up to a particular age and then it comes to a halt. Height increases up to the age of 18years in women and up to the age of 20 years in men. Increase in height is attributed to the production of growth hormone, called the HGH( Human Growth Hormone), which is secreted by the pituitary gland called the master gland of our body. It is rather difficult to increase height after reaching adulthood as the production of these hormones slowly stops. In most cases, the epiphyses of the long bones are fused as the last bits of cartilaginous tissue in the bones turn into solid hard bones. This prevents any further growth in longer bones. However, if the hormones are released naturally, increase in height can be observed. Increase in height at your age depends upon a no. of factors like 1.Heriditary factor 2.Recorded any increase in height in last 6 months 3.Amount of effort you are putting in for increase in height 4.How much serious are you for your height 5.Will you give 100% if I show you a direction 6.Just do your bit with full determination and leave the rest to time, exercises and medicines. Consult me Fast for Homoeopathic consultation as you short of time

In many cases, simple changes in your diet like taking high fibre foods and lifestyle can provide relief from irritable bowel syndrome. Although your body may not respond immediately to these changes, your goal is to find long-term, not temporary, solutions. I will inform you on how to make diet, lifestyle changes, make you understand instructions for taking medication because it won't work if you don't take it as directed.
