It is generally safe to travel at all times during your pregnancy. Whether you are going by car, bus, or train, it is generally safe to travel while you are pregnant; however, there are some things to consider that could make your trip safer and more comfortable. It is essential to buckle-up every time you ride in a car. Make sure that you use both the lap and shoulder belts for the best protection of you and your baby. Buses tend to have narrow aisles and small restrooms. This mode of transportation can be more challenging. The safest thing is to remain seated while the bus is moving. If you must use the restroom, make sure to hold on to the rail or seats to keep your balance. Avoiding travel from 32 weeks (8th month) through birth is recommended for women who have complicated pregnancies with risk factors for premature labor, such as mothers carrying multiples. You can travel but be careful according instruction for safe pregnancy.

ARE YOU WALKING AROUND WITH FRAGILE BONES?

MBBS, MS, DNB, FNB (SPINE SURGERY)
Orthopedist, Chennai
ARE YOU WALKING AROUND WITH FRAGILE BONES?
ARE YOU AT HIGH RISK OF DEVELOPING A FRACTURE IN YOUR SPINE OR HIP? Read on to know more about OSTEOPOROSIS.
There is another silently progressing, common disease other than diabetes and hypertension that can cause potentially serious risk to your health in old age. Osteoporosis meaning “porous bones” indicates a condition where your bones become more porous, thinner and weaker due to accelerated loss of bone or reduced bone formation or both. It is most evident in the vertebrae of spine, hip bones and in the wrists.
Thin and porous vertebrae fracture easily. They crumble on their own or due to minor stresses during daily activities like coughing, sneezing, bending forwards. These fractures can be painless and go unnoticed in multiple levels till the spine develops a forward bend and a noticeable loss of height. Or it can cause significant pain and disability, limitation in daily activities and increased dependence on others. A simple slip and fall at home can cause a fracture in the hip bones that can make the patient completely bed ridden. These situations commonly cause depression and general deterioration of health and leads to other risky complications in old age.
Though it is most common women after menopause, it also happens in men above age of 65 years and in those with certain risk factors like liver or kidney disease, thyroid or parathyroid disorders, and certain tumours. Smoking has been proven to cause osteoporosis. Long term steroid intake given for various conditions and medications given for seizure disorders also can cause osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis can be detected easily by a screening test called the DEXA scan. Any one above the age of 50 years should consult an orthopaedic surgeon to know if they are at risk of osteoporosis and whether he/she needs a DEXA scan. If the DEXA scan reveals that you have osteoporosis, you must be evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon and an endocrinologist to look for other treatable conditions that can cause osteoporosis. There are medications that are prescribed to strengthen the bones and reduce the risk of fractures in future. Diet rich in calcium and vitamin D and supplementary calcium and vitamin D medications are also an essential part of treatment.
Although the vertebral osteoporotic fractures commonly heal in a few weeks with bed rest and medications, some of them may not heal in time or cause severe pain and disability. These patients might need surgical intervention. Vertebroplasty is a procedure that involves injection of bone cement into the broken vertebra and can give immediate pain relief. Kyphoplasty is a similar procedure that can restore the height of the fractured vertebral body and reduce the forward stoop in the spine. Open surgery might be required sometimes if the collapsed vertebra causes a compression of the spinal cord or nerves in the spine. Osteoporotic hip fractures and wrist fractures often need surgical treatment for fixation.
Prevention of osteoporosis should begin in childhood. Growing bones accumulate calcium and the calcium in bones reaches a peak at around age of 26 to 30 years. After that age, there is a slow decline in the bone calcium, which accelerates in old age especially in women after menopause. So those who reach a lower peak of calcium in bones by the age of 30 are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis in old age. This means that adequate intake of dietary calcium, vitamin D and adequate exercise from young age is very important to prevent osteoporosis.
Prevention of falls and resultant fractures in those who are osteoporotic is an important aspect of treatment. This needs modification of their living spaces to remove the risks of a slip and fall. Routine exercises and an active lifestyle load the bones and make them stronger and it is a must for all those with osteoporosis and those at risk of developing osteoporosis.

Do not do any thing, just wait till your due date. It seems you have taken the pill in good time, so most likely you are protected from unwanted pregnancy.

Conceiving at the age of 43 will be little bit difficult even though it is not impossible. First have a check up with your doctor ,do basic tests and general health assessment. If everything is ok give a short trial of treatment for three to six months bearing in mind the increased chromosomal problems in conceiving at old age.

Homeopathic Treatment for Pain

Pain is a feeling of distress that is caused by intense damaging stimuli. It is one of the most common reasons that compels the patient to consult a physician and take painkillers. In the long run, painkillers have adverse effects on our body. While most of the times, the cause of the pain is diagnosed, there are cases in which the cause remains undiagnosed. Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is based on symptoms and has no side effects and thus, it is most effective in the treatment of both muscle and joint pains.

Here we give you a list of common homeopathic pain medications that are prescribed to give relief to patients and the circumstances under which they can be used.

  1. Bryonia- It is given when there is a hot swollen joint, pain from overuse of body part or injury. The slightest movement aggravates the pain and is relieved of the pressure on the affected part.
  2. Causticum - It is recommended for muscle spasm, stiff neck and pain. The character of the pain is sharp and tearing and is caused by cold dry weather. The patient is relieved by the warmth.
  3. Arnica Montana - Arnica is suggested when a patient has sore, bruised feeling all over the body. The patient is very sensitive to the pain and everything on which he rests seems very hard. Arnica is a top remedy in case of injury from falling, sprain and bruise.
  4. Rhus Toxicodendron- A first choice of remedy in case of rheumatism and back pain. The right side of the body is especially affected. The patient experiences stiffness and aching pain that aggravates during the rainy season, in the morning, on exposure to cold and also by rest. Pain is relieved by moving the affected parts and by warmth.
  5. Cuprum Metallicum- It is given in cases of muscle twitching or severe muscle spasm. The patient feels better when the painful area is massaged.
  6. Magnesia Phosphorica - This is the best medicine for all types of pain, especially when the pain is in the right side of the body. The pain is aggravated by cold and movement and is relieved by heat and rest in the general. This is suggested to relieved lower abdomen pain during menstruation.
  7. Pulsatilla- This is an excellent remedy for rheumatic pains that shifts from one joint to another. Homeopathic medicine is suggested after a thorough understanding of patient symptoms and the medication differs from patient to patient. So it is better to consult a homeopathic physician to select a suitable medicine to get relieved from pain.

Question is for Gynecologist Doc I'll be getting married in Dec an I want to conceive soon with a month or two, what should I do.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
Question is for Gynecologist Doc I'll be getting married in Dec an I want to conceive soon with a month or two, what ...
The pregnancy happens when sperms meet ovum in the fallopian tube of the female. While sperms are always deposited at every acy of coitus, the release of the ovum is a event that has no sign. Most women cannot find out when they have ovulation. Also that the ovum when released from ovary has a life span of just 24-48 hours. So any body not having sex in this ovulation period will not conceive. The best day to predict ovulation is found by the following formula. If your partner has regular periods, then she will be able to predict her menses date based on her know how. Find the expected of menses (edm) now count 14 days before it. This day is the date of the most possible ovulation. As a matter of safety consider 3 days on either side of this date, and thus you will get 6 days in each cycle where the possibility of ovulation and hence pregnancy is highest. Most women may not have regular cycles and in such the above mentioned formula may fail. Say for a girl whose menses is regular and expected on 28th april, the day of probable ovulation would be 15th april and considering 3 days on either side, the fertile period would be 12-18th april also in a woman having 12 regular periods in a year, the ovulation may not occur each cycle, but it may happen few times a year. So this is just a probability if a couple having regular sexual activity doesnot conceive in a year of their efforts, they must get treated by a gynecologist.

My wife once pregnant and underwent d&c after that she didn't conceive yet will I need to undergo semen analysis?

My wife once pregnant and underwent d&c after that she didn't conceive yet will I need to undergo semen analysis?
Hello- D & C is a blind and a very hash procedure done to a very soft and delicate organ uterus. D & C scraps out the unwanted material but also damages the inner fertile layer (endometrium) of uterus. This is why many couples fail to get conceive after this procedure. Assuming that you had a chance of pregnancy before , the semen analysis of your husband might be normal. The only thing you have to workout is repair and regenerate the fertile endometrium of the uterus. Start herbal uterine tonics and medicines to improve your chances.Good luck.

DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Bangalore
Pain in vagina during intercourse may due to few common reasons like lack of lubrication, infection, unbroken hymen, endometriosis. So it is important to get an internal checkup done to come to a proper diagnosis. If its only due to lack of lubrication she can use lubic jelly before contact, but do not miss to contact doctor for a thorough check up.

Hello, It is very common not to have ovulation in every monthly cycle these days, so there is nothing to panic. Schedule modification like exercise early morning, consumption of green tea and certain herbs like alovera, garlic, ginger promote ovulation, so do have in your daily diet. You can also go for ayurvedic treatment if these don't work, it's not a big issue.
