Hello My 4 month old baby boy is breastfeed and bottle fed too. He is putting on good weight. Bt he passes green color stool. Do I need to worry?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
We always advise against bottle feeding as it is inherent with many problems. Only breast feed & homemade semi solids are the ideal food for a 4 month old baby. If you stop bottle the stool should become normal. I can give you constant support and advice if you give all details like birth weight and immunisation details, better to ask privately.

I have an eight month old baby boy he has suddenlystopped taking bottle feed he starts crying wen I offer him bottle milk as in formula milk but he is properly taking breast milk and other food too What could be the reason behind it?

Please do not force your baby to take the bottle if he is taking breastmilk without any problems. You might want to include milk in his food preparations so you may give him milk, but if you are continuing breastfeeding, that's all he requires as far as milk is concerned. Some kids become averse to the smell of plastic, so do not worry too much for this.

I am a 23 year old lady, I used to feed my baby and its been 14months for I am feeding her now when I stopped feeding her my left breast which my daughter used to suck more became as hard as rock, I could feel the hardness and due to milk filled in it got enlarged. I kept on controlling my pain for 2days. But then it was unbearable so somebody told me to pour out some milk out of it, so I pressed it hardly and poured out a lot of milk. I found my pain lesser and felt light but my left breast has become larger than the other, I wanna ask is it normal?

Pediatrician, Pune
If the supply is more than the demand, it is likely to cause problems, there should be an equilibrium, try to breast feed from both breasts, alternatively. As the left breast is producing more milk, it has become larger than the other, once breast feeding is stopped, things will be back to normal, try to give food to the baby as much as possible, breast feeding should reduce by some time.

My daughter is 7 months old and not taking anything except her mother's milk. What should I do. Whenever we try to put anything in her mouth she just spits it out.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Persist with the efforts, children take variable time to like the food. Eat along with the child and let him see how you eat the same food. Parents are role model for children. Be patient, don't loose heart, so long as he is active and putting on weight.

Is it necessary to get the vaccination of brain fever to the child of 5 months. We rae residing at indirapuram, ghaziabad. If yes, then which vaccination and how much dose do it have and approx cost for the same? thanks .

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Three doses of hib vaccine is usually given in combination with dpt and/or hepatitis b. Cost depends on brand used and doctor's fees and could be around one thousand rupees. Other vaccine for meningococcal meningitis is used in high risk babies or those who demand and who can afford. All require 3 doses for primary immunisation at one month interval and a booster dose after one year

Growth of your child is normal so do not force food. You should develope healthy eating habits for normal growth. Forcing foods will result in behaviour disorders.

Do burping after every feed for 5 to 10 min then only make the baby lie down. While doing burping only there will be little vomiting, for which you need not worry. For little vomiting just neglect nothing will happen. Give domstal drops if vomiting is more. After few months vomitings will subside totally.

Stomach Ache in Kids - 7 Causes Behind It!

MD - Paediatrics, DNB (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Rourkela
Stomach Ache in Kids - 7 Causes Behind It!

Stomach aches or abdominal pains are one of the most frequently reported health complaints faced by children. Children below the age of twelve are known to suffer from recurrent stomach pain. While pains such as these lead to momentary discomfiture, they also lay the path for graver worries if neglected for too long. Your child may feel sick and bunk school for two days; rest and home care can restore his or her health, but that in no way, is the best suited way of dealing with the situation. If tummy aches resurface over a certain period of time, parents should be cautious enough to look for the root cause and should try to eliminate it accordingly.

Widely noticed causes of stomach aches in children:

  1. Unhygienic food can affect the child’s digestive system.
  2. Intolerance to a certain food item should not be overlooked.
  3. Perpetual anxiety can make the tummy twist and turn.
  4. Urinary Tract Infections can also lead to acute abdominal pain.
  5. Serious factors such as gallstones or appendicitis could also be present. Immediate expert consultation is advised in such a case.
  6. Caffeine and packaged soft drinks can be harmful.
  7. Butter, ghee and other greasy products can trigger tummy aches.

Ways to treat tummy aches in children:

  1. Keep children away from gas producing food items: Food that is hard to digest should be avoided. Don’t let your child have too many nuts regularly.
  2. Keep them hydrated: Fluid intake should be monitored. A child should drink at least six to seven glasses of water per day. Fruit juices or soups can also be given to them alongside main meals. This helps digestion.
  3. Do not stack up food in one go: Eating a lot in one meal is a bad way of satisfying hunger. Have smaller meals in more numbers. Six to eight meals will keep your child full and will also eliminate chances of acid reflux which happens either due to an empty stomach or too much piling up of greasy food.
  4. Timely check - up with the doctor: If tummy aches refuse to go away, take your child to a doctor for a thorough check- up. Administer medicines as prescribed by the physician.
  5. Regular deworming every 6 month ensures a good appetite and well-being.

Cervical Cancer - Causes and Testing for Diagnosis

Cervical Cancer - Causes and Testing for Diagnosis

What causes cervical Cancer?

Genital Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a very common virus in both men and women that can lead to the development of genital warts, abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer.

This virus can cause normal cells on your cervix (Know more about Cervix Infection) to turn abnormal. Over many years, abnormal cells can turn into cancer if they are not found and treated by your doctor. It can take 10 to 15 years (or more) for cells to change from normal to abnormal, and then into cancer. Abnormal cells are sometimes called 'pre cancer ' because they are not normal, but they are not yet cancer.

You cannot see or feel HPV or these cell changes on your cervix. Screening tests help us to look for these changes or for abnormal cells (Learn more about sexually transmitted diseases)

How is HPV spread?

HPV is transmitted during genital skin to-skin sexual contact. This includes vaginal or anal sex and possibly oral sex.A person can get HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sex. They will never know it because HPV usually has no signs and symptoms.

In most cases, HPV goes away within two years, without causing any health problems. It is thought that the immune system  fights off HPV infection naturally

What screening tests exist for HPV- related diseases?

Cervical Cancer: Cervical cancer can be detected with routine Cervical cancer screening (Pap test) and follow-up of abnormal results. The Pap test can find abnormal cells on the cervix so that they can be removed before cancer develops.    Abnormal cells often become normal over time, but can sometimes turn into cancer. These cells can usually be treated, depending on their severity and on the woman's age, past medical history, and other test results.

An HPV DNA test, which can find certain HPV types on a woman's cervix, may also be used with a Pap test in certain cases (called co-testing). The HPV-DNA test is done to determine if you are infected with one of the high-risk types or if your doctor finds certain type of abnormal Pap test result.

Even women who were vaccinated when they were younger need regular cervical cancer screening because the vaccines do not protect against all cervical cancer strains.

Is there a treatment for HPV or related problems?

HPV vaccination could prevent most cancers and other diseases caused by HPV. There is no treatment for the virus itself, but there are treatments for the problems that HPV can cause:

Visible genital warts may remain the same, grow more in number, or go away on their own. The warts can be treated when they appear.

Abnormal cervical cells (found on a Pap test) often become normal over time, but they can sometimes turn into cancer. If they remain abnormal, these cells can usually be treated to prevent cervical cancer from developing. This may depend on the severity of the cell changes, the woman's age , past medical history, and other test results. It is critical to follow up with testing and treatment, as recommended by a doctor.

Post detection of ovarian cancer the doctors , depending on your cancer stage can recommend the treatment more- surgery, medical treatment, radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Do not start with cow or buffalo milk until child crosses 1 year. Reason for crying might be colic pain so start with colic aid drops 4-5 drops 3-4 times a day, other alternative for breast feeding is formula feed which is available as lactogen or nan. I suggest you not to start formula feed if you are having enough breast milk. Continue breast milk atleast for 1 year.

Only thing I want to add is that after refrigragion you can thaw the milk by keeping the katori in lukewarm container. And for two days you should express the milk and empty the breast whenever possible just to maintain adequate milk supplies.
