Penis Cancer: Facts, Symptoms, Causes and Diagnosis

Penis cancer is a form of cancer which affects the penis. It can be caused due to poor hygiene, not being circumcised, HPV infection (human papillomavirus), engaging in coitus with many sexual partners and overuse of tobacco.

Facts about Penis Cancer:

  1. Malignant cancer cells start to form in the tissues of the penis.

  2. Redness, discharge, irritation, sores, lumps and bleeding is characterized by penis cancer.

  3. Treatment and prognosis usually depends on the stage, size and location of the tumor.

Symptoms of Penis Cancer:

  1. A lumpy feeling on the penis.

  2. Change in the color of an area in the penis.

  3. A part of the skin in the penis becoming thicker.

  4. A sore (ulcer) that can bleed.

  5. A velvety and reddish rash.

  6. Crusty and small bumps.

  7. Growths which are bluish- brown and flat.

  8. Smelly discharge of fluid under the penis-foreskin.

  9. Swelling can occur at the end of the penis where the foreskin usually ends.

  10. Lymph nodes in the groin area which spreads to the penis.

Diagnosing Penis Cancer:

  1. CAT Scan (CT Scan): This is a procedure in which detailed pictures of a particular area in your body is taken from different angles. A dye is swallowed or injected so that the organs are shown more clearly. This procedure is also called computerized axial tomography or computerized tomography.

  2. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): This procedure involves using radio waves, magnetic waves and a computer to make a picture of an area inside the body. A chemical called gadolinium is injected in the vein so that the cancer cells can show up bigger and brighter in the detailed picture.

  3. Ultrasound Exam: This procedure involves ultrasounds (high-energy sound waves) bounce of organs and internal tissues. This helps to detect the cancer cells. The echoes form a detailed picture of body tissues.

In all probability she can note be considered cured of cancer, but as a precaution, just keep doing annual follow ups and annual mammography of the opposite breast as a safeguard.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. As I understand, your mother has undergone a radical mastectomy, right breast. Was the axillary lymph node dissected too as a part of the surgery? I hope that she is recovering well now. Nevertheless, adherence to a mediterranean diet is highly recommended now. Emphatically, try eating a low fat diet, fibre rich foods including whole grain cereals, green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits and maintain an ideal body weight. Steamed fresh water fish prepared with extra virgin olive oil should be included in the diet plan too. Apart from the above-mentioned, a proper & active lifestyle with due focus on de-stressing, exercises & relaxation, and a long term hormone therapy as contextually appropriate can help reduce the risk of a relapse. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best.

My Mother age 75 has been detected breast cancer as per biopsy and was operated and removed left breast and sent for testing. Report says its a pT2 with grade 2. Er is positive 60% Pr is positive 1% and Her is negative. What does this mean. Will she over come it. What are the survival rates without chemo.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear mam, She is having early breast cancer for which breast has been removed which is estrogen receptor positive, means she should be given hormonal therapy which will continue for minimum of five years. She doesn't need chemotherapy at this age if she is ER positive. Prognosis is good, don't worry.

She got attacked by breast tumor. And it's become hard and spread to left breast please give me some homeopathic remedies.

BHMS, Certified in Aesthetic Skin Treatments, Certified in Applied Behaviour Analysis
Homeopath, Mumbai
Fibro adenomas are non-cancerous (benign) and harmless tumors which are made up of fibrous tissues of the breast. These are common in adolescent and young women. The incidence of Fibroadenoma reduces with increasing age. Diagnosis is based upon: Clinical history, Physical examination, Mamography – It is the process of using low amplitude x rays to examine breast and Biopsy – Women in their teenage do not need biopsy, if lump dissolves on it’s own. Dangerous signs : Sudden increase in size of tumor. Pain in breast not affected by menstrual cycle. Hard, immovable tumors. Transformation of Fibroadenoma into cancerous tumor is very rare. Homeopathic medicines are prescribed after studying patient’s complete case history. It enhances the body’s self healing mechanism (immunity) thus further recurrence of fibroadenoma can be prevented. Consult.

While massaging my body today I got something hard on the left on my breast. It's something like a lump, when I pressed it. I felt pain. Please tell me what is it? Is it something to worry about?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
It had to be fibroadenoma which unless large or causing pain, does not need to be removed. It is a benign tumour and very slow growing. If small then there is no treatment needed at present.

Hello my wife has pain in her breast in left side. Like muscle catch. When she lift anything from left hand she gets pain. And when she takes deep breath she gets pain. Only In left side below her Breast.

Fellow Breast Surgery (MUHS), DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Oncologist, Aurangabad
The way you have described your wife's pain, it is unlikely, although not impossible, to be due to any disease in breast. If it would have been due to breast disease, other brest complaints like lump, heaviness, skin changes, blood or pus discharge, might have been present. But nothing can be said surely unless a doctor examines her. So it will be better to see a doctor relating to muscles and bone diseases, (orthopedician), to rule out cause of pain originating in the wall of the chest which lies below the breast. He will suggest solution as well as if a breast surgeon is to be seen or not. Hope this helps.
