Constipation is common in pregnancy and pain and swelling are bcz of piles. Please drink plenty of water/ fluids and take fruits, Veges and salads so as to increase the amount of roughage. STDs - Warning Signs To Watch Out!

MBBS, DIiploma in Yoga and Ayurveda, Diploma In Dermatology And Venerology And Leprosy (DDVL), PGDPC

STDs - Warning Signs To Watch Out!

STDs can be said to be the main down side to what is globally known as the most widely appreciated pastime. Yes, your read that right, as they can also be quite rampant. For example, by the age of twenty five, about half of all sexually active adults would have been the victim of at least one STD. Therefore, one should be aware of the risks and take precautions while indulging in sexual activities.

A lot of people are of the opinion that only an actual act of sex can lead to an infection by an STD. However, this is really not true as any sexual activity which features any or all of the mouth, penis, vagina and the anus has the potential to lead to an infection by an STD.

What doesn’t feel right?

  • STDs come in all sorts of ways. Some of them are curable and can be successfully treated while others just have to be managed. One of the symptoms to keep an eye out for includes a swelling or redness in the region around the penis or the vagina. Also, if a person experiences a lot of pain during urination, it is a very good idea to get checked for an STD.
  • The symptoms of an STD are basically that not everything feels okay. Apart from the symptoms which have been mentioned, others which also exist and serve as a warning sign are a severe itching, which is experienced in the genital region and a discharge from the penis or vagina. In addition to this, unexplained weight loss along with skin rashes and bumps, sores or warts around the mouth, or the genital regions are also fairly good signs that an STD has been contracted.

Road to recovery

  • If a person suspects that he or she may have an STD, it is very important to consult a doctor as delaying in doing so can harm other parts of one’s body, and at times permanently.
  • When it comes to the treatment of an STD, an antibiotic course of treatment is usually the way to go. It is important that the course of medication which is followed is specifically for that person as using another person’s medicine course can backfire.
  • The best way to practically avoid contracting an STD is to practice safe sex. Sex is something which is supposed to be fun and satisfying. Keeping a few things in mind, the fun can be almost unbridled. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Stressed Sex Life - 3 Tips For You

MBBS, D.E.D
Sexologist, Jhansi
Stressed Sex Life - 3 Tips For You

Stress plays a significant role in creating rifts in relationships as it mostly forbids partners from meeting each other’s physical and emotional needs. This reduces intimacy in a relationship and results in an unhappy sex life. In the modern world of continuous work pressure and fast paced lifestyle, stress generally takes away all the energy required to enjoy a fulfilling sex life. Here are some tips, which will prove to be very effective in keeping stress away from your sex life.

1. Don’t make it seem necessary to have sex even if your partner is tired

If you find that stress due to problems at workplace or financial issues is affecting your partner considerably, then respect his/her decision of saying no to sex. Don’t pressurise your partner to get intimate just because you want it. Your patience and understanding nature will increase your partner’s admiration towards you, in turn leading to a more passionate and happier sex life.

2. Try to stay away from performance anxiety

Don’t let performance anxiety take a toll on your sex life. Studies show that being conscious about their performance in bed leads men to lose their erection, which takes all the pleasure away from intimate moments. Instead of being stressed about your sexual performance, focus on your partner’s needs and attend to them for a more pleasurable sex life.

3. Focus on getting rid of other stressful issues from your life

Common tensions of your daily life and everyday issues like the normal household chores, and your duties and responsibilities towards your family often leave you too exhausted to spend time with your partner. Moreover, getting preoccupied with social commitments also minimises the time available for just the two of you.

To prevent these stressful situations from affecting your sex life, try to focus on removing them. For this, you can ask for help from other family members to carry out household chores or diminish your time at social gatherings to be available for each other exclusively. Spending more time in each other’s company will not only brighten your day, but will also give you an enhanced and more intimate relationship. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help for your sister. Well, given the radiological findings, its advisable to consult a breast specialist for correlation first. He/ she is likely to recommend further diagnostics including an FNAC/ biopsy as would deem appropriate before deciding on the way forward. For the time being, she may apply a little bit of hot/ cold treatment that may help alleviate her pain. Keep diet and lifestyle streamlined, and stay well hydrated. You can connect with the diagnostics for further integrated traction (alternative medicine) as would be contextually required in her case. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best.

IRREGULAR MENSES What is an irregular menstrual cycle? Having an irregular cycle means that the interval between periods varies each month. That is, sometimes they come every 28 days, sometimes every 20, sometimes every 30. Having irregular periods is very common. I see them in my practice all the time. The causes can range from something insignificant to something that requires treatment. For example, if you're a teen, your body's hormones can fluctuate and take some time until they find a balance. Therefore, it’s normal to have an irregular period during adolescence or, sometimes, for your period not to arrive in a given month. But, before we get down to business, remember that the main cause for your period not to arrive is a pregnancy. So, if your period doesn’t arrive, check to make sure it’s not actually a baby on the way. Now, let’s look at the most common causes of irregular periods: • Eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia • Excessive weight gain or weight loss; extreme thinness and obesity both cause your menstrual cycle to become irregular or even to disappear • Stress or emotional problems • Hormonal problems, for example, when the thyroid malfunctions • Travel • Over-exercising: If you're an athlete and train very hard, you may stop menstruating because your body wants to survive and save energy and menstruation requires energy • Problems with the pelvic organs (such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, for example) • Drugs like birth-control pills can affect the frequency and / or intensity of menstruation • Breastfeeding Aloe Vera Aloe vera helps treat menstrual irregularities naturally by regulating your hormones. 1.Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe leaf. 2.Mix in one teaspoon of honey. 3.Consume it daily before having your breakfast. 4.Follow this remedy for about three months. Note: Do not use this remedy during your periods.

Are You Getting All the Nutrition? 5 Signs that Indicate the Opposite

Are You Getting All the Nutrition? 5 Signs that Indicate the Opposite

Have you ever taken a look at your food and questioned yourself about your nutritional intake? Whether you’re a vegan, pescatarian or non-vegetarian, it is essential that your food provides you with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Never rely on vitamin supplements alone to give your body the nutrition it needs. Though a few nutrient deficiencies have no symptoms, most can be easily identified. Here are a few tips to help you understand whether your body is getting all the nutrition it requires or not.

  1. Cracks around the lips: Dehydration is not the only cause for cracks around the lips. This could be a sign of vitamin B, zinc or iron deficiency. It could also be a sign of not getting enough protein. To correct this deficiency, increase your intake of poultry products, eggs, cheese and salmon. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron and hence you should also include fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C in your diet.
  2. Hair loss and brittle nails: Biotin or vitamin B7 is crucial for healthy hair and nails. Hence, if you’re experiencing sudden hair loss and brittle nails, it could be a sign of vitamin B7 deficiency. Egg yolks are a rich source of biotin, but to get the most out of them it is best to eat them raw. However, avoid eating raw egg whites as this can be counterproductive. Other food items rich in biotin are nuts, mushrooms, salmon, cauliflowers and bananas.
  3. Red bumps on the skin: Red eruptions on the skin can be a sign of low levels of essential fatty acids or vitamin A or D. Sardines and anchovies are rich sources of Omega-3 fatty acids that can correct this deficiency. To deal with a vitamin A deficiency, you need to eat lots of green leafy vegetables, carrots and sweet potatoes. The best way to get Vitamin D is through safe sun exposure (get your vitamin D level tested today).
  4. Numbness in hands and feet: Numbness and a tingling sensation in your hands and feet could be a sign of vitamin B deficiency. This is often also accompanied by anxiety, depression and tiredness. Vitamin B supplements are easily available in tablet and capsule forms or can be found in spinach, beetroots, eggs and poultry.
  5. Leg muscle cramps: Frequent cramps in your toes, calves and arches of the foot could be a sign of potassium, magnesium and calcium deficiency, so get yourself tested today. To fix this, eat plenty of almonds, hazelnuts, apples and green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a specilized and ask a free question.

Experiencing any of these symptoms? Get tested yourself today and find out for sure!

10 Reasons To Give Mushroom Coffee A Try

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
10 Reasons To Give Mushroom Coffee A Try

10 reasons to give mushroom coffee a try

1. Mushroom coffee is less acidic
Most coffee contains natural acids, which may cause heartburn and stomach upset. For those who suffer but don’t want to give up drinking their morning cup of java, switching to a low-acid coffee like mushroom coffee is a great alternative. But even those who don’t suffer from those problems can benefit, as better health often begins by helping the body become more alkaline. The acid-alkaline balance is important since many functions in the body occur only at a certain level of acidity or alkalinity. Many enzymes and chemical reactions in the body work best at a particular ph.

If you want to boost your energy naturally and even slow down the aging process, an alkaline diet is the way to go. That’s because a more acidic diet tends to take a toll on our bones and muscles the older we get. As reported by natural news, an analysis by the national institutes of health explained, “as we age, there is a loss of muscle mass, which may predispose to falls and fractures. A three-year study looking at a diet rich in potassium, such as fruits and vegetables, as well as a reduced acid load, resulted in the preservation of muscle mass in older men and women.”

2. You can enjoy your coffee in the afternoon without concern about staying awake all night

Because there is only a minimal amount of caffeine in mushroom coffee, you can enjoy a cup in the afternoon or evening without having to worry about being kept awake all night. In fact, drinking mushroom coffee is likely to encourage an even better night’s rest. It’s even been used to treat insomnia, rather than contributing to it. A study by scientists at china’s peking university in china published in february 2012 in the journal of ethnopharmacology found that ganoderma lucidum (reishi) extract induced sleep in rats that moved around freely in the test environment.

Drinking mushroom coffee can also help alleviate chronic fatigue disease, a condition that makes one feel exhausted nearly all the time.

3. Boost your immune system

On its own, coffee is loaded with antioxidants, but a mushroom coffee adds even more, providing a super-boost to your immune system. Reishi’s well-known effects for strengthening the immune system have been proven in a number of scientific studies, including a randomized, double-blind study published in the january 2009 issue of phytotherapy research. The researchers found significant improvements in the immune cell counts of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. They noted that ganoderma lucidum improved immune function, improving patients’ ability to fight off cancer, as well as any secondary infections that could compromise their treatment and their health.

4. Lower cholesterol

Mushroom coffee may even help lower overall cholesterol, thereby, improving cardiovascular health. By signaling the liver to kick in production, the swiss nestle research center found that the herb was a “renowned medicinal species” and “inhibited cholesterol synthesis” in a 2005 study.

5. Promoting weight loss

Drinking mushroom coffee may help promote weight loss in a number of ways. In addition to being part of an alkaline diet, which naturally helps one to shed pounds, it further assists by increasing the body’s metabolism. According to the memorial sloan-kettering cancer center, ganoderma, in particular, contains active properties that can increase your metabolic rate after consumption. A higher metabolism means that your body uses more energy to digest food more efficiently, and as that energy is fuelled by breaking down fat deposits and calories in your body, it can lead to weight loss.

6. Healthier cardiovascular system

In addition to improving the health of your cardiovascular system by lowering cholesterol, mushroom coffee supports cardiovascular health by promoting blood flow while lowering oxygen consumption to the heart, as plaque can cause an early death by blocking and clogging artery walls.

7. Liver protection

Studies have found that patients with hepatitis b have improved significantly within just a month after taking reishi, one of the primary mushrooms used in mushroom coffee. After patients with elevated liver enzymes and bilirubin took the mushroom for three months, all of their values were within a healthy range, revealing that mushroom coffee may serve as a very effective liver protectant.

8. Say goodbye to urinary tract infections
Normally caused by bacteria, urinary tract infections come with very uncomfortable symptoms like cramps in the lower abdomen, painful and frequent urination, and fever. The university of maryland medical center reports that taking 150 to 300 milligrams of reishi extract two to three times per day may relieve urinary tract infections, a much welcome bit of news for those that suffer from them frequently.

9. Lowering the risk of parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder that makes it difficult to walk, balance and coordinate the body, an incurable condition that no one would wish on their worst enemy, but research has found that drinking mushroom coffee, may help to fight this disease. A study published. It may also protect against other degenerative disorders, like alzheimer’s disease.

10. Anti-inflammatory properties

Speaking of anti-inflammatory properties, laboratory tests have shown that bioactive compounds derived from reishi and other mushrooms offer powerful anti-inflammatory properties, as well as anti-tumor, anti-aging and immuno-modulatory properties. Several reishi-derived substances are also antibacterial and antiviral, exerting direct inhibitory actions against human herpes viruses, the influenza virus, and even hiv.

What this means is that, in addition to protecting against parkinson’s, maintaining a proper level of inflammation through diet and lifestyle, including consuming anti-inflammatory foods and beverages like mushroom coffee, means a lower risk of developing other diseases too.

Inflammation plays a very large part in the body’s health. When the immune system overreaches and starts attacking healthy body tissues, an overabundance of inflammation results, causing conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, celiac disease, irritable bowel, and more. Even for diseases that aren’t autoimmune, it tends to play a part, as the body is forced to continuously heal tissues in a given area.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the joints, symmetrically (usually). The joints become swollen, red, hot, painful & tender. The joint movement becomes limited due to pain & swelling
It starts with inflammation of the synovial membrane but may involve the joint capsule and other surrounding soft tissues.

It is a self limiting disease. But by the time it leaves, the patient is crippled due to contractures & deformities.
Acute phase can be managed with medicines.

Commonly used medicines are ibuprofen/paracetamol/aspirin in therapeutic doses. They help to control symptoms of pain and swelling of the joints in most of the cases by their anti inflammatory properties. Fever is also controlled.

Vitamins, minerals, anti oxidents & other supportive medicines are also needed. Omega 3 fatty acids have a very definite role to play in improving the response to the treatment.

Physiotherapy helps in preventing contractures & deformities.

The patient should do general exercises & keep active.

He may have to be further investigated.

In established cases of rheumatoid arthritis dmard (disease modifying drugs) e. G. Methotrexate, hcq, leflunomide, saaz etc. Have to be used.
They all are toxic drugs & can cause bone marrow depression along with other side effects. They should be taken under medical supervision.
Sometimes steroids may have to used.
The dose of these medicines should be adjusted to the minimum required, to control the symptoms.
Blood, urine tests & other investigative procedures should be done periodically to rule out any side effects.
X rays of the affected part should be done to confirm diagnosis & assess the extent of damage.
Diabetes, vitamin d deficiency or any other metabolic disorder should be ruled out. Sometimes they mimic the symptoms & create confusion in diagnosis. Associated disorders like these, most certainly affect recovery adversely.

It should be ascertained that the patient is not allergic to any of the medicines that he is going to take.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disorder that lasts over many years with acute exacerbation & remissions. The earning capacity of the family is adversely affected. The cost of medical treatment is high. If the patient needs surgery, it is further escalated. Most of the population in india is not covered by any medical insurance. All these factors put together create an atmosphere of depression in the family. Patient feels morally degraded & may even develop suicidal tendency.
In a situatation like this it becomes essential that a moral support is provided to the patient by his friends & relations. Treating doctor has a very definite role to play in keeping up the moral of patient.
