What Causes Obesity? Why Am I Getting Fat?

What is the prevalence of obesity?
Obesity is rapidly becoming a common problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were about 1.6 billion overweight adults aged 15 years and above and at least 400 million adults are obese worldwide. It is a serious public health problem that is growing in countries with low or middle income. According to IOTF (International Obesity Task Force), it was estimated that the prevalence rate of obesity could reach 45% to 50% in the USA, 30% to 40% in Australia, England and Mauritius and more than 20% in Brazil by 2025. Of note, many developing countries like India, face the double burden paradox of obesity and under nutrition. What is Obesity?

Obesity is basically the mother of most chronic diseases. It is measured as excess weight as compared to height of individual and usually measured in terms of BMI (Body Mass Index). Obesity is defined as BMI more than 30 as per western population is concerned and more than 28 as per Asian population is concerned. However even a BMI of more than 23 for Asian population and more than 25 for western population is considered as abnormal and defined as overweight which is considered as a harmful state. Other methods to measure obesity is waist circumference and waist to height ratio. Waist circumference of more than 80 in women and more than 90 in men is consider abnormal irrespective of BMI.

What if I am obese?
Obesity is not a single disorder but is a starting point of various disorders. In the long run it can lead to increase chances of Diabetes, hypertension, PCOS in women, infertility issues in women, heart disease, sleep difficulty. It also causes osteoarthritis especially of knee joint, breathing difficulty and many other diseases with increased chances of certain cancers in the long run. Overall being obese can be a costly affair.

Since 6 months, I get into some worries about what would happen if I am not there, or if some one cheat my children, or if my children fall sick, who will take care in my absence, whether my wife can take care and how does my children take care of my business, family and grow well healthy and wealthy without loosing the wealth created by us. Do they get cheated if I have not updated about the followup, renewals, or get into wrong hands or action by some jealous people etc. Do they get married to a person with good family back ground and enjoy the life with good earning etc. And this disturbs my sleep at night often. Is this due to my house shifting last year still settling though I am 61 years and have normal BP, Sugar under control with one tablet each, ankylosing spondylitis and having severe cough problem most of the days.

I am not talking about the medical issues but having concern about the future of your family is because of a human being's need for survival and there is nothing wrong with it. Problem is when the thoughts overpower us and affects daily routine which is what seems to be happening in your case now. So to begin resolving the issue- it will be good idea to sort all documents, organise and keep everything in place and inform your family/ trusted people about it. Have you thought about making a will? About other things that are worrying you- one strategy that might help is to think of the worst case scenario. You have survived and most likely your family members will too. Once you know the worst that can happen and you are prepared for it, the present will not remain so disturbing. If these thoughts still trouble you, please reach out to a psychologist. I wish you well.

These are the methods to treat fastly pimples: • Imbalance in hormone level causes excessive sebum production and causes acne. So do not take stress and do exercise daily such as running, jogging and long breathing exercises. • Do YOGASANA daily. Especially do SINHASANA & SARVANGASANA daily. • Use oil free face wash and drink 7 -8 glass of water daily. • Do not touch your pimple because your finger transfer bacteria to it and make it worse. If you touch it then clean your face with water. • Take cucumber and papaya pulp. Mix it well and add 1 tablespoon Turmeric. Make a paste and apply it on face and leave it for 15 minutes. • Steam your face to open the pores, which in turn clear the skin. Steam your face for a couple of minutes. • Take 2 teaspoon of RAKTASHODAK SYRUP of BAIDYANATH company once a day.

Urinary Tract System - 9 Things You Must Know!

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS, MBBS
Urologist, Delhi
Urinary Tract System - 9 Things You Must Know!

Urology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diseases affecting the urinary tract system and male reproductive organs. The organs that come under the scanner here are the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis). Though there is a prevalent misconception that gynecologists are for women what urologists are for men, urology also deals with certain women related health issues. These include overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, and urinary incontinence. In fact, doctors who specialize in female urology gain detailed knowledge of the female pelvic floor together with intimate understanding of the physiology and pathology.

Here are 9 things you should know as a woman

1. Age related factors affect both men and women: Right around the time when menopause and andropause strike, changing hormone levels affect the pelvic floor, bladder, urethra and vagina in women causing problems like urinary tract infection and incontinence. These conditions are effectively treated by an urologist who can also probe for underlying conditions like kidney stone, polyp, or tumor in severe cases.

2. An overactive bladder is more common than you think: Around 40% women have to hit the bathroom every hour or so owing to this. Simple lifestyle changes like lowering the intake of caffeine and alcohol, in combination with pelvic floor exercises can solve the problem.

3. Women sometimes pee in their pants too: A majority of the female population between 40 and 60 suffer from either stress incontinence (when you cough, sneeze or laugh) or urgency incontinence (leaking when you want to go badly). Urologists want you to know that there are less invasive options and medications available to treat this problem.

4. Walk the exercise path to good health: Exercises for your vagina like kegal are great when done right. You can connect with a practitioner who specializes in toning and the stimulation of pelvic floor muscles to treat incontinence.

5. Pelvic pain: If it is not gynecology then it is urology. A general pain in the pelvic region triggers a visit to the gynecologist first for most women. From menstrual cramps to ovarian cysts, all of this may well be taken care of by your gynecologist too. But when the usual culprits are not the cause for your discomfort, it's time you get the urology aspect examined thoroughly too.

6. Know the difference between UTI and STI: Because of cross symptoms, one often gets mistaken for the other. So check with your urologist to understand the cause and cure of your particular problem.

7. Recognize pelvic organ prolapse: This condition is defined by a bit of bladder, rectal, or uterine tissue bulging into your vagina. An urologist can provide non invasive options to deal with this.

8. Women can get kidney stones too: This is true, especially when you forget to hydrate yourself in hot climates or high temperature situations.

9. Urology can solve some sexual problems too: Whether it's sexual dysfunction, low libido or trouble reaching orgasm, urology can play its part to help you out.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

I'm 32 years and I have been smoking for last 10 years. Now I wish to quit the habit and I'm trying thru nicotine supplements and by pure control. Though I reduced my cigarettes from 20 to 10, I want to know what damage I have caused to my lungs and respiratory track. What tests should I take to avoid cancer or any deadliest I'll effects due to my smoking? And is there a chance to reset my lungs to it's natural stage? Please tell.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. You are smoking for last 10 years. Initially, lung cells slowly starts destroying. Damage will be there. You can take a lung function test to ascertain the ill effects of lungs. Your lungs will start repairing itself immediately after you quit smoking. It could take almost one year to complete the process, provided you don't smoke in between again. The risk of cancer will also be lowered. Please quit smoking completely. I suggest deaddiction therapy. Take care.

10 Super Food To Boost Your Memory and Concentration

It’s not only a sign of old age and dementia that we start forgetting things. It can happen to a person of any age, background, or health condition. There are children who, at times, have difficulty concentrating. On the other hand, there are people who forget some things on a daily basis, like their keys, wallet, cell phone, appointments, and many other things. Well, we believe that everything and everyone can be helped with a good diet. Here are 10 super foods that can help boost your memory and concentration.

1. Tea

Whether you choose to have black tea, green tea, or ordinary one, research has found all of them to be good for your brain. However, out of the above, green tea can be your best mate if you are looking for some quick results along with other benefits, like lowering LDL cholesterol, reduced risk of cancer, anti-aging, etc.

2. Green Leafy Vegetables

Vegetables like spinach, watercress, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli are amongst the best foods you can consume to boost your memory. These green leafy vegetables are rich in essential nutrients and minerals, including calcium, potassium, iron, and vitamins C, E, K, and B complex.

3. Nuts

Nuts are a rich source of vitamins E and B6 along with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These are also considered great antioxidants and have high nutritive value. Nuts are heart-friendly and also help boost your memory. You can include nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts, etc. in your diet.

4. Whole Grains

Whole grain foods like whole pasta, oatmeal, and brown rice can be part of your regular meals as these are rich in glucose. These foods can also ward off the risk of diseases like diabetes, cancer, stroke, etc.

5. Caffeine

Believe it or not, caffeine is one of the foods that helps boost your memory and improves your concentration. It is found in energy drinks, chocolates, coffee, tea, and certain medications. It makes you energetic, too! Out of the above, coffee is considered best as moderate long-term use also reduces risk of diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.

6. Soy

Foods like soymilk, tofu, etc. are rich in substances like choline, isoflavones, and lecithin. These substances have been known to slow down the process of memory loss and improve cognitive function.

7. Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits like avocado, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, etc. fortify your body’s self-defense mechanism and boost your memory. These are also rich in vitamin C and other essential nutrients.

8. Fish

Fish is one of the super foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. If you do not prefer eating fish, you can also stick to fish oil capsules. Fish like herring, sardines, and salmon can boost up your memory function and concentration power. These are also considered great for patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s.

9. Berries

Berries are one of the richest sources of flavonoids – the antioxidant that improves memory recollection. Stick to blueberries and give your brain some great power to memorize and recall.

10. Dark Chocolate

Good news for chocolate lovers; one more reason to have an extra bar! Dark chocolates are rich in antioxidants called flavonols that can help enhance cognitive function. Dark chocolates are also capable of increasing alertness and memory function.

Include these super foods in your regular diet and see the difference in your memory and concentration!
