5 Ways To Prevent Sports-Related Injuries

MS - Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Hyderabad
5 Ways To Prevent Sports-Related Injuries

Do you remember the last time you had a searing knee pain in the middle of your morning run? It was probably because you did not warm up properly. The incidence of injuries in various sports has gone up in the recent times, and it is mostly due to the lack of proper warm up exercises. However, other factors come into play as well, such as the pressure of increased workload on the current batch of athletes, missing a trick or two with the proper technique to be followed, etc.

In order to reduce the risk of an injury, it is advised to follow these simple tips:

  1. Set realistic goals for yourself: Don’t go overboard with anything that includes repetitively stressing and straining your body over a certain degree. If you are planning to go for a run or hit to the gym, make sure you set goals that you can sustain and find feasible. One example of this would be to not increase the amount of weight drastically while lifting weights as it can lead to serious injuries.

  2. Follow the right technique: Proper technique is very important in sports, a lack of which can lead to injuries. Ask your trainer to observe your form when you perform any activity. Focus on your breathing and posture when you are exercising.

  3. Warm up before you begin exercising: Warming up before you exercise or play a sport is important as it helps loosen your muscles and boost blood circulation. It drastically reduces the risks of sustaining injuries, and also prepares your body for the subsequent exercise.

  4. Cool down: Similar to an essential warm up is the need to cool down; it is another aspect that should not be ignored. Cooling down usually consists of stretches and postures that promote flexibility. The muscles become sore after working out. Stretching can help reduce post workout pain and make the joints flexible. Cooling down also helps in eliminating lactic acid from the muscles, which means less pain after exercise.

  5. Listen to your body: During an activity, if you feel that you can no longer carry on, terminate the activity. The chances of injury rise if you continue to push your body over your threshold limit. If you think that you can no longer carry on doing something without risking an injury, avoid doing it altogether. Listen to your body, and it shall never fail you. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult the doctor.

5 Ways To Control Lower Back Pain

Fellowship in Interventional Pain management , Diploma in Anesthesia, DA, MBBS
Pain Management Specialist, Jaipur
5 Ways To Control Lower Back Pain

The lower back region of your body contains many important supportive structures to carry your upper body weight and also transfer the weight to the hips and the legs. This weight is primarily carried by lower vertebrae of the spine along with muscles and ligaments. There are many important nerves running through the spine which perform important functions of the nervous system. Lower back pain could be caused if any of the above is adversely affected.

Causes of Lower Back Pain

If you sprain your ligaments or muscles it could cause lower back pain. Curvature of the spine could also affect the nerves within the spine, pressing up against them, thus causing pain. Some of the common causes include poor posture, arthritis, fracture, improper lifting, or a ruptured disk among others. There are no variable symptoms associated with this condition but only one, which is pain in the lower back.

Tips to Control Lower Back Pain:

  1. Restorative sleep: Getting lots of sleep or rest is a great way to correct lower back pain, especially the ones caused by muscles or tendon wear and tear. Paradoxically, irregular sleep might aggravate your lower back pain. Make a strict sleep routine and stick to it. Make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep and more if prescribed by the doctor to reduce the pain and let the body heal itself.

  2. Exercise is the key: Your lower spine is supported by the muscles residing in your back and abs. These muscles need to be strengthened through exercise, during the period of a normal day. There are a wide range of exercises which can be performed for about 30 minutes to keep your core muscles engaged and provide relief to the nerves of your lower back.

  3. Heat Therapy: Heat therapy brings nutrients and stimulates blood flow to the affected area. There are several forms of heat therapy like a hot shower, heating pad, heat wrap, hot water bag, or soaking the affected area in a hot-tub which provides warmth and heals your lower back.

  4. Cold Therapy: This therapy helps to reduce the pain to a great extent. It is defined as a process of ice pack application on the affected area which decreases inflammation by slowing down the nerve impulses. It reduces pain and by allowing you to rest also help in healing.

  5. Correcting your posture: It is very important for you correct your posture as spinal deformities arising from years of bad posture is a leading cause of lower back pain. Try to sit in a corrective posture and slowly increase the time that you can spent in that posture until good posture becomes your default. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pain Management Specialist.

I'm 34 years old male. I have been having lower backache for two weeks now. It just came suddenly. I used to carry water everyday. I felt tingling in my right leg also below the knee. I have consulted a Dr. Also. He did x-ray and gave some medications. He told x-ray is normal and its just muscle strain. But the pain still there now though not that much painful. Is it really just muscle strain or slipped disc?

Hi Thanks for your query and welcome to Lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from Fortis hospital, New Delhi. You are very young to actually have persistent back pains. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - To maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - If pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - Physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - Adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - Ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - Analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - Avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc We will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation. Thanks & Regards Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena Consultant Orthopaedics Fortis Hospital, New Delhi

Homeopathy: An Ideal Cure for Knee Pain

The knee joint is a very complicated joint in the body as it helps in a number of movements. Knee pain may result from sudden injuries, osteoarthritis or due to overuse and over exertion on the knees.

The various causes of knee pain are:

  1. Osteoarthritis
  2. Injury to the knee joint
  3. Being overweight puts stress on the knee, resulting in knee pain
  4. Infections in the knee joint result in knee pain
  5. Movements such as heavy squats may cause the knee joint to be sprained

Homeopathy is a holistic method of treatment that focuses on treating the cause of the disease rather than just the symptoms. There are many homeopathic remedies that are used for the treatment of knee pain:

  1. Rhus Tox: This remedy is used to treat knee pain that results from repetitive motion of the knee joint.
  2. Bryonia Alba: This is used in treating knee pain that gets worse when the knee joint is moved. Also, it is advised to rest after using this remedy.
  3. Ledum Pal: This is an excellent treatment for knee pain that is caused by rheumatism and gout. The symptoms tend to worsen under cold conditions.
  4. Guaiacum: If the knee pain is caused by abscess in the knee joint, then guaiacum is used to treat it. It is advised to apply cold compress to the affected area to allow it to heal faster.
  5. Benzoic acid: If the cause of the knee pain is deposition of uric acid, benzoic acid is used in the treatment.
  6. Hypericum: This remedy is used to treat pain that stems from rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain while contracting the knees. It is an effective remedy to reduce pain in the nerves around the knee joint.
  7. Colchicum: This remedy is administered if the knee pain worsens after moving the leg. It is advised to rest the knee and apply warm compress on the affected area to reduce the pain after this particular remedy is administered.
