Symptoms and Treatment of Sinusitis

The inflammatory condition of your sinuses (marked by inflammation of your nasal cavities) caused due to viral, bacterial or fungal infection; any autoimmune disorders or allergic reaction is known as sinusitis. This condition is also referred to as 'rhinosinusitis' as nose inflammation occurs. Sinusitis can be either acute, sub-acute or chronic in nature. Acute sinusitis is generally caused due to the common cold and lasts not more than four weeks. Sub-acute sinusitis is more prolonged in nature and lasts for about eight weeks. Chronic sinusitis is more severe in nature and can last for up to twelve weeks or even more.

The most common symptoms of sinusitis are as follows:

  1. Severe headache
  2. Nose blockage
  3. Release of yellowish green fluids from your nose.
  4. Fever
  5. Difficulty in breathing
  6. Painful sensation in your eyes, ears and forehead.
  7. Post nasal discharge
  8. Frequent cough
  9. A sore throat
  10. Nausea
  11. Body fatigue
  12. Neck stiffness
  13. Tastelessness and anosmia (loss of smell)

The treatment methods available for sinusitis are as follows:

  • Intake of painkillers like paracetamol can give you temporary relief from your aches. But consuming too much of these can cause side effects such as loss of appetite and drowsiness.
  • Keep yourself hydrated by drinking about 2 to 3 liters of water every day and take proper rest.
  • Steam inhalation can give you relief from nasal congestion.
  • Using nasal sprays like Oxymetazoline can also give you temporary relief.
  • Your doctor may advise you antibiotics like Amoxicillin in your sinusitis is chronic in nature.
  • Immunotherapy helps to treat sinusitis if your sinusitis is caused due to allergic reactions.
  • Your doctor may also recommend an endoscopic surgery of the sinus if your condition is found to be very severe.

Earache: Is It an Ear Infection?

MS - ENT, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Earache: Is It an Ear Infection?

Ear infection is a disorder which can either be viral or bacterial, affecting one’s middle ear the most. This disorder is painful as fluid accumulates in the ear leading to inflammation. Infections of the ear can either be chronic or acute in nature, the damage is more prominent in case of chronic infections. Acute ear infections can be painful but they usually fade away in a few days’ time.

Symptoms
In case of an ear infection, you will experience pain in the ear. A pressure may develop in the ear accompanied by drainage of pus from the ears. Some severe cases might also lead to loss of hearing, be it temporary or permanent. The symptoms of ear infection may develop and affect both the ears. Fever during ear infections is another common auxiliary condition.

Causes
Ear infections tend to occur when the Eustachian tubes in the ear get blocked as a result of fluid accumulation in the ear. The Eustachian tubes can get blocked due to the following reasons –

  1. Being affected by allergies
  2. Conditions such as cold can lead to ear infection
  3. Problems in the sinuses
  4. Excessive smoking
  5. Infected adenoid glands

In addition to the causes, there are certain risk factors which can make one prone to ear infections, some of them being:

  1. Narrow Eustachian tubes in children increase the risks of ear infections
  2. Changes in climate and altitude
  3. Second hand exposure to cigarette smoke

Treatment
For mild symptoms, simple home remedies will suffice. A warm compress on the affected area can reduce the pain. Taking pain relieving medications such as ibuprofen can also help in reducing pain. For moderate symptoms, antibiotics may be required to treat the bacterial infection.
If other treatments do not work, then surgery may be required. Usually tubes are inserted in the ear to drain the accumulated fluid. If it involves the adenoid glands, then surgical removal of the adenoid glands may be required. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ENT specialist.

Dr. I have problem of snoring while sleeping in any position. Is there any medicine for stop snoring completely. As it's disturb sleep of my family.

MBBS, cc USG
General Physician, Gurgaon
Hello, I am giving you some health tips for snoring problem Lifestyle changes to stop snoring Lose weight. If you’re overweight Exercise exercising your arms, legs, and abs, for example, also leads to toning the muscles in your throat, which in turn can lead to less snoring Quit smoking. smoking irritates the membranes in the nose and throat which can block the airways and cause snoring. Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and sedatives because they relax the muscles in the throat Establish regular sleep patterns. Create a healthy bedtime ritual with your partner and stick to it Clear nasal passages. If you have a stuffy nose Keep bedroom air moist. Dry air can irritate membranes in the nose and throat, so if swollen nasal tissues are the problem, a humidifier may help. Change your sleeping position. Elevating your head four inches may ease breathing Sleep on your side instead of your back Consult chest Physician for further management

You should try 1) steam inhalation 2-3 times a day. 2) drink lots of water (around 2-3 litres/day) & keep yourself hydrated. 3) anti-allergic medications are must for you, as the condition may worsen with time.

I have been suffering from severe sinusitis and I got medication for it, then it controlled and now again I have recurring episodes of it like severe breathlessness during nights, throat pain etc. Is there any sort of permanent cure for sinusitis. Kindly suggest me if it is there.

D.N.B, D.L.O
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Hello lybrate-user there is no permanent treatment for sinusitis. It occurs due to allergy so as you cannot get rid of allergens like pollen dust its unlikely to cure it for ever. Jus that you can take precautions to avoid dust exposure, avoid strong odours, wash the linen regularly avoid pets. If sinusitis is secondary to deviations of central partition in nose you can try for surgery options. Take care.

What you are feeling is foreign body sensation. It can occur due to allergy/ gerd/ smoking. To get a proper diagnosis and rule out cancer we need to do a laryngeal endoscopy.

Have you correctly diagnosed it as tonsils as per doctor did you do the rapid strep test or throat swab culture? treatment for tonsillitis will depend on the nature of tonsils, if bacterial infection of tonsils then antibiotics can be prescribed. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

My 18 year old girl friends nose point gets bulky and round on nose tip also one nostrils svelen inside a round in nose which obstruction breathing Pl. Help what to do why this happens. Thanks.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
For bulky nose this has to undergo plastic surgery and for the obstruction I need to tell you few things the bone of he nose gets deviated this leads to nose breathing problem if a person suffering from nasal obstruction along with sinusitis and mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically.
