Dear user. Whether you are diabetic or not, it is not advisable to take liquor or alcoholic drinks at all because they are harmful for your liver, and whole of your body. Even a single drop of alcohol is poison for your liver. Quit alcohol. Take care.

Please clarify whether Honey and jaggery / jaggery items can be eaten by the diabetic patients.

Please clarify whether Honey and jaggery / jaggery items can be eaten by the diabetic patients.
Honey and jaggery should ideally be avoided by diabetic patients. However, as in some vegetable or dal preparations, if it has to be used, it is better to use these instead of sugar. Sweets made of jaggery or honey should be avoided.

in hypothyroidism heart beat may be increases suddenly . do not worry about that it is only for while . Take diet for hypothyroidism:- high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread, Nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables more plenty of water: Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in B vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. flax oil, Selenium: Tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or Brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: This amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4. Taking a supplement may help, Avoid few foods in hypothroidism i.e. caffeine products tea, coffee, tabcco, alcohol / wine , kale, broccoli, spinach, mustard green, cabbage, turnip, millet, cassava, linseeds, pine nuts, soy products as soy milk, tofu, soybeans, soy souce, also avoid stress. What are the precautions and medicines for the person having uric acid problem as well as asthma and blood pressure problems?

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
continue your medicines for asthma and HTN. A high uric acid level can be caused when your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid rapidly enough. A high uric acid level may cause increasingly frequent attacks of gout, or it may never cause problems. A high uric acid level may also cause some people to develop kidney stones or kidney failure. And some people with a high uric acid level also develop high blood pressure, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, but it's often unclear whether this is a direct cause or merely an early warning sign of these conditions. Factors that may cause a high uric acid level in your blood include: Diuretic medications (water pills),Drinking too much alcohol,Genetics (inherited tendencies),hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid),Immune-suppressing drugs,Niacin, or vitamin B-3, obesity, psoriasis, Purine-rich diet — organ meat, game meat, anchovies, herring, gravy, dried beans, driedpeas, mushrooms and other foods Renal insufficiency — inability of the kidneys to filter waste Tumor lysis syndrome — a rapid release of cells into the blood caused by certain cancers or by chemotherapy for those cancers,Also, you may be monitored for high uric acid levels when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. Avoid protein diets, avoid more milk products. bad habits , fast food/fat/oily,salty foods. Coffee, smoking, alcohol intake. Non-veg., take whole grain, oats, green veg.,plenty of water in day time, 1 glass of water at night before bed.Take tab. Zyloric 100 mg once a day.Take tab. Bencid 500 mg once a day. Tab. Ulracet sos or tab. Naprosyn 500 mg once a day or sos for pain in joints.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for more than 2-3 hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Fruits should be had as a mid meal. Avoid junk foods. Alcohol can cause dehydration and imbalance in sugar levels. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

Aprameyaji, If diabetes is confirmed with fasting sugar >126 mg and PP >200 mg /100 ml, then it can only be brought under control by using modern meedicine. No natural medicine can help. In India there are close to 7 crore diabetes patients and increasing day by day. If natural medicine were to be effective then every one should have been relieved of that disease. So aap unako samzaie ki modern davai lena hi sabase accha upay hai is bbimari ko control me rakhane keliye. And aap ko agar sahi salah chahiye to private question puch lijiye, janha mai poori jaankari de sakunga.

lybrate-user, Your thyroid test result is normal. There is no need to consider you have either hyperthyroidism or hypo. For hyperthyroidism to be considered TSH levels have to be lower than 0.1 mU/L. So do not worry. In fact looking at your weight and height your BMI is 25.01 kgs / M2 (normal <23 kgs/M2), so you need to exercise daily and reduce a few kgs. Your ideal body weight should be about 55 kgs. Thanks.

I have swelling at the base of 1st toe in both the feet. As such there is no pain or fever but flexibility of the toe is affected resulting in pain at the time of walking. I can not wear shoes because of swelling. I am 66 years old. Orthopedics diagnose it a gouty condition. The uric acid is 5.6 mg/dl. Ra factor and c-reactive protein are negative. X - ray reveals bony growth of the toe. I also tried physiotherapy without any positive result. Can any doctor suggest any treatment?

May be not. The present levels are because of control that has been achieved because of diet, medications etc. And may not be long lasting. Your second reading suggests you are in impaired glucose tolerance category at least now. I think you should review the status after about 2-4 weeks of diet control and exercise. Then get your 1. Fasting, and 2 hrs after food and before dinner tests done as also hba1c. Then discuss with your consultant. For introducing medications. I don't think stopping all medicines will work and periodic review and diet anti diabetic mangement will have to be continued.

Black tea is perfectly fine. Go ahead. Better consult a doctor regarding medicines. Monitor your sugar levels regularly if it goes down then its okay. Else you will have to take medicines. Currently you are beyond the diabetes borderline. If you eat proper diet and remain fit, you can bring it down.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. If your TSH is 5.87 mU/L, then you are having a very marginally high TSH, at best it is called as Sub- clinical hypothyroidism. This does not need any treatment, unless you have any associated symptoms of hypothyroidism like weight gain, cold intolerance, swelling of face and lower limbs, irregular menstrual periods, dry skin, dry hair and hair fall, joint and muscle pains plus anxiety and depression. Further if you have any of the above symptoms then you also need to get a anti TPO antibodies test done to confirm if there Hashimoto; s Thyroiditis. If a person has developed hypothyroidism then treatment is for life time. There is no question of 15 days treatment etc. When levothyroxine is prescribed it should always be taken on empty stomach early in the morning and nothing should be eaten for at least 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours after that. Because the drug is in very small quantity and is very sensitive. Taking it after meals is absolutely useless. F you have any doubts please do come back. Another important aspect about hypothyroidism is that it affects fertility. Thanks.

Infertility

MSc
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Lucknow
Infertility

Infertility : You are not alone

I meet many ladies everyday who are fighting with infertility. Some express their Desire to have kids and pain associated with infertility openly and some are shy to share anything. People make allowances for all sorts of grief. Infertility is a loss of staggering proportions. A feeling of being incomplete, A feeling of deep emptiness from Inside ....
Those brave ladies who experience it, it can be deep , incomprehensible, painful Bewildering and Mind-numbing. Its not easy loss to define or put into words. Not having a child is something which makes them deeply hurt. I am sharing My experience in the Clinic today , A wonderful lady , very focused and warm person. Expressed her feelings openly with an heavy heart . This emotional Turmoil may be faced by many ladies. Just sharing so that many of us can identify with her and get a positive attitude and rest of us might provide them enough positivity and strength to lead a normal life.
We all will agree that it is sad to not be able to have children, the idea of feeling desperation and wild crippling grief could seem dramatic, excessive and even weak.
She told me that Most common response from the people I meet is the word ' Kum se kum Tumhe cancer , to nahi hai, Tumne baccha to nahi khoya hai, Koi aur serious problem to nahi hai na ''' The word ' KUM se Kum ' ( At least ) can be very disheartening many times.
We all are different and we deal with our emotional status differently. According to her she was not very happy with the ATLEAST concept of sympathizing .
She told ,many times in her fight with infertility she needed positivity around me , needed someone to sit down and hold her hand and say, "I'm so sorry, this must hurt so much. I'm here for you." Anyone who does not have mockery in eyes ,have deep love and compassion in every word and the very fact that they allowed my grief to exist and they heard me was healing. So Simple thing which can make her energized.
Unfortunately, more often, the unintentional message she heard was that of her sadness being undermined, made less by the words "at least."
even I was thinking How could her personal pain possibly measure up against all the greater tragedies in the world?
I found her eyes becoming wet as she described how she cried rivers over the little boys and little girls who would never have her smile or her husband's eyes. she began to have dreams of stumbling down a difficult forest path leading to a pitch black lake where a child was floating face down in the water. Even she wanted to hug her child and feel the simple pleasure of being a MOM. Even I felt my heart go for her... Becoming a Mother can be the most happy experience of anyone's life.
When I was talking to her I realized that There is nothing trivial about grief over infertility. A person can grieve the loss of their dream of a biological family as honestly and deeply as someone else can grieve the loss of a child or parent or partner or their health.
There is no "at least" when it comes to the breaking of the human heart, there is no need to try to measure one person's pain against another to see who is worthy of feeling grief and who isn't.
If some one from your near and dear ones is fighting with Infertility then assure that they have the emotional and mental support from you. A real guidance and taking the medical help at right time can do wonders. But we all require some amount of sensitivity towards their pain. Rest can be done by doctors and medical professionals . The only thing is Power of Positivity and feeling that someone Understands their pain.
