Improtance of Vaccination

MBBS, Diploma in Public Health ( Preventive and Social Medicine)

Hello, I am Dr Mangesh Chandewar. I have done post graduation diploma course in community medicines.

Today's topic is the importance of vaccination.

Vaccination is a biological molecule which is injected either through the injections, orally or through sprays. This helps us to create immunity against most of the infections.

Why vaccine is so important?

Even though we try to maintain good hygiene, cleanliness, sanitation, but still we can not prevent infection and the diseases caused by such infections. Right from the birth when delivery occurs, the baby comes in contact with the environment which is highly infected. This is like TB, Tuberculosis, which is more prevelent in India and we want to save our baby. Then right from the birth, the vaccines like BCG which is helpful in developing immunity against tuberculosis.

As per the National Immunization schedule and as per the WHO, we shoul give basic immunization, also called vaccination to the baby in order to develop immunity against the diseases.

What are the reasons to vaccinate the child?

If we do not give vaccination, it is not like the baby is going to infect but we can prevent most of the infections. If we do not give vaccination, the disease or infections can cause serious consequences rather than the vaccines. Vaccines are safer because they are being evaluated through the various phases during the clinical tria;. And also when it comes in the market.

Since they are very safe, they hardly have any side effect or consequences. and if any of the serious consequence occurs due to vaccination, that happens once in millions, so that they can immediately be taken care of. And teh action is taken according to the condition. My aim to get every baby vaccinated by birth, till the age of 5 years, all the vaccines should be appropriately given according to the proper age group. And the vaccines which are given after 5 years as and when required, once should get vaccinated.

In adults, when there is endemic or epidemic for any infections, say in 2010 swine flu was there, one should get treated as early as possible and should get vaccinated so that the disease should not be reoccured. The maximum number of people get vaccinated against infections. The community get the hard immunity. Accordingly we can prevent the disease throughout the community not only the individuals. This will help our country to fight against the diseases ans the infections.

This is all the basic immunisation and the vaccinations, I talked about. There are otther infection also, such as dog bite and other infections as well which can be vaccinated.

There are so many vaccines in the trials for so many life threatning diseases. As and when you get the chance, you can discuss it with the famly physician or any other doctor.

In order to know about the different vaccines. the appropriate age groups for the vaccines, or the side effects or any other vaccine related querry.you can contact me through Lybrate.

Hello Doctor, My baby is now 6 months old, he is 6 kg born 1 month pre-term with 1.8 kg. He is taking nanpro1 from past 2 months. Doctor suggested to give rapgrow drop and lactodex hmf sachet, but these medicines are really tough to get in the market and I don't see any review for rapgrow. Will it be safe? Also he is continuing zincovit drop and raricap drop.

As the baby growth is good both length and weight and if developmentally normal, you can stop giving rapgrow and lactodex hmf. Continue with zincovit and iron drops. And important is to give vit d3 (ultra d3) drops 1ml once daily till 1 year of age as we see vit d defeciency very commonly. Start on the weaning diet and iron rich foods so that you can slowly stop iron supplementation if haemoglobin is normal.

Common Skin Problems in Newborns

Mongolian Spot

This is extremely common in Indian babies. This appears as a blue-grey patch on the buttocks or the lower back. The patch can be quite large in size. They look unsightly, but apart from the cosmetic appearance, they do not cause any problems. Often parents confuse it with a bruise and see a dermatologist when it doesn?t settle down. This can be safely ignored and it may either disappear or become smaller with age.

5 Habits Parents Should Teach Their Children

5 Habits Parents Should Teach Their Children

Parents are responsible not only for the birth of the child, but also for their well-being. For children, their parents are their first teachers, who inculcate in them the right manners, attitudes and habits. Consequently, you too must be careful in deciding what habits and manners you pass down to your children.

Some of the habits that you should teach your children are:

  1. Eating healthy food: Children always have the propensity to consume junks and avoid healthy food. It is the duty of the parents to correct this and teach their kids to eat healthy food. You must explain and elucidate the importance and nutritional value of eating healthy food. At the same time, the harm caused by the junk food must also be brought to their notice. You should introduce multiple fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Eating healthy food is a habit that reaps great benefits in the long run.
  2. Table manners: Children eating on their own generally create a mess. Therefore, you must teach your child the right table manners. When to use spoon or fork and what should be the etiquettes that must be observed while eating with a large group of people must be known to a child. You should begin to treat your child as a grown up as he or she sits at the table.
  3. Regular brushing of the teeth: The importance of teeth is most acutely felt with advanced age. Therefore, it is imperative that you teach your children to take good care of their teeth. You must educate your child about the necessity of good teeth and see to it that they brush daily and twice a day. Brushing in the morning as well as before going to sleep is equally important and the child must be aware of it.
  4. Early to bed: It is necessary for children to get adequate sleep. Therefore, you must make it a habit from the very start to put them to sleep early and see to it that that they get sufficient rest.
  5. Play outdoors: You must make it a habit for your children to play outside more often. Staying at home without any activity has serious repercussions like obesity and lethargy. Therefore, it is extremely important that children involve in sufficient physical activity.

Hi, Give following medications: 1. SYP. SINAREST-AF 1.5 ml three times a day for 3 to 5 days. 2. SYP. ASTHALIN 1.5 ml three times a day for 3 to 5 days. Both the medicines are syrups not drops, check the medicines while buying. If your baby develops difficulty in breathing / difficulty in taking feeds / fever, then consult nearby child specialist.

After every feed burp your baby. Babies may puke out extra milk after every feed which is like curd. But see if baby is gaining weight. If gaining weight normally then nothing to worry.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH)
Pediatrician,
You must consult psychiatrist & if you are in a bigger city there are deaddiction centres. These people need proper supervision and positive reinforcement. You alone can't do it. It is ateam work. But your involvement is most important. Wish you all the best.

Exclusive breastfeeding to satisfaction of baby up to 6 months of age is only way to increase baby wt. If baby is fed properly, from 10th to 14th day of age, wt comes equal to B wt. Thereafter it increases by about 30 gm per day. Mother should take good nourishing diet. If you have any further queries please contact me privately through Lybrate.
