I stopped the use of an eye drop acupat after using it for 2 months, 10 days ago. However a sinus infection caused by its sude effect has not gone away. I am afraid that is it a long term side effect or it will go away? What shall I do to get rid of it?

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
Sometimes if the connection between nose and eyes duct is wide and you put eye drops this will go into nose and produces irritation and congestion and if congestion stays for long time this leads to infection, if having infection in nose than take antibiotics and decongestant under guidance from nose surgeon.

My wife is 60 years old. Her kharrate r disturbing whole family. To stop kharrate what to do.( Snoring problem. Please suggest to stop snoring.)

M.S(ENT),DNB,D.O.R.L, Laryngology fellow
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Mumbai
Snoring can be due to obstruction in the nose, throat or the voice box. An ENT examination will be needed to ascertain the same. If there is a history of recent weight gain, you need to get her thyroid function tests. Weight reduction will help if the patient is obese. Also, sleeping on the sides instead of the back will help reduce the snoring to some extent.

My father 50years, is facing the hearing issues. We have to speak multiple times or loudly at tyms when calling from a distance. As per the doctors here, ear machines is the only cure. I wanted to know if there is any alternative? Time no bar. We can spend time in yoga, physio but not looking up for hearing aid.

DNB (ENT), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Mumbai
Unfortunately there is no other cure for sensorineural (hearing nerve related) loss. Yoga and physio have no role to play. Your father needs audiometry followed by hearing aid trial and fitting. He will only grow deafer with time and soon even hearing aids won't help much. Deafness leads to social isolation and dementia over a course of time.

I am 23 years old. I have snoring problem. Can you please suggest how to control it.

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Rajkot
It may be due to overweight, nasal blockage, low soft palate or enlarged tonsils. So for proper diagnosis you are requested to send photos of nose and throat For further help consult me privately. Mostly people having snoring, have also sleep apnea, so you must go for a test called sleep study, by which we can diagnose a disease called sleep apnea. Send me the report of sleep study, so I can guide you further.

Hi. I went to the ENT to remove ear wax. He removed the wax from my left ear and after I got home. It started bleeding a little. So I called him up and he told me to put cotton in my ear and said that it was a small skin tear and that it will stop after I change the cotton once or twice. It's late at the moment and I need some help. It bleeds little bit. I am worried. Can you help? Please. Thanks.

My both ear are operation but my hearing power is low but I do not take a hearing machine what I am do.

MS - ENT,MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Kolkata
Hello lybrate-user kindly share your pta reports and what type of ear surgery done. Then I can help you better. In case of hearing loss due to nerve problem, the less you hear the less sound energy reaches your brain and gradually the nerve starts degenerating. That's why hearing augmentation is important when you are hearing less. It's comparable to audiological physiotherapy for your hearing nerves hope this helps

Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can impair your sleep -Treatment:A cold usually lasts for a week or two. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn't need medical treatment. -Complications like infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs must be treated with antibiotics. -Gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. -Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation. -Tablet nasorest-p once/twice daily may ease breathing. -Do steam inhalation once or twice daily.

Ear Wax - How To Get Rid It?

Ear Wax - How To Get Rid It?

Hearing is an essential process in everyone's life. Be it your social life or professional activities, hearing influences every aspect of your life. You can thus, never ignore the health of your ears to enjoy a healthy life. But there are several hindrances to obstruct effective hearing. One of the problems is the accumulation of a natural substance called cerumen produced by the glands present in the ear canal. The accumulated cerumen is medically referred to as Earwax. Over production of cerumen is mainly triggered by the deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and magnesium.

The basic function of the wax is to protect the ear canal from invasion by foreign particles like bacteria and dust particles. This is necessary for the smooth functioning of the ear and its protection from invaders. However, it becomes an irritating problem when the earwax is produced in excess. The problem aggravates when the ear canal is blocked due to accumulation of earwax. In such cases, we use certain objects such as bobby pins, Q-tips or cotton swabs to clean the accumulated earwax from the ear canal. What we do not realise is that pricking the wax using these objects can sometime cause significant damage to the ear. These objects push the wax deep inside the canal, leading to blockage.

The most common symptoms of excessive earwax are as follows:

  1. Earache
  2. Developing a fullness feeling in the ears
  3. Loss of hearing on temporary basis
  4. Noises inside the ear
  5. Itching

Here are the preventive measures to remove ear wax blockage:

  1. In order to prevent blockage of ear wax, try keeping it moist by frequently running water into your ear while taking a bath. This will prevent the ear wax from getting dried up so that it doesn’t get blocked in the ear canal. Make sure, you drain the water from the ear after running it for some time.
  2. Don’t use any pointed objects inside the ears as it can cause ear infection while pushing the wax deeper.
  3. Avoid inserting cotton swabs or ear buds into the ear canal. You can use them to remove exposed ear wax at the ear opening, but don’t push them deep inside the ear canal. It can push the excess ear wax inside the ear canal, thereby resulting in to an impact.
  4. Don’t use candle ear wax remover. Ear candles are another method to remove ear wax, but it can be really dangerous as you need to hold the lighted candle very close to your ear. It can even burn your ear.
  5. Don’t use cold water or a strong jet to drain out the excess ear wax. Strong jet can lead to the damage of the ear drum while cold water may result into dizziness.
  6. Avoid using any other method to remove ear wax at home, such as suction.
  7. Don’t use any type of acidic liquid in order to soften the ear wax.
  8. Omega 3 fatty acids are good for mitigating the problem of ear wax. So, include walnuts, avocados, salmon, albacore and ground flax seed in your diet.
  9. Consult a doctor if the problem persists even after using home remedies.

I have problem breathing. My nose always remain congested. An X ray revealed a bit of deviated nasal septum. I was suggested to go for inferior turbinate electro cautery. I want to know if it is a safe procedure and what is the success rate of this procedure.

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
1. If you have deviated nasal septum it has to be treated by surgery (septoplasty) 3. Inferior turbinate electro cautery is for hypertrophied turbinate, not for deviated nasal septum 3. It is a safe procedure. 3. Consult a good ent surgeon for advice and treatment.

Some months ago, I got chicken pox and from that I got a hole in my nose. What should I do to get it curred? Please help me!

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello, pits formed post-chicken pox can only be taken care with the help of various skin treatments like lasers, radiofrequency etc. But getting totally rid off this is a bit not possible even undergoing any of these procedures. Home remedies: -neem leaf extract applied to the scar 2-3 times daily will greatly reduce their appearance. -mix 5 drops or so each of neem oil and jojoba oil. Soak a cotton ball with the oil mixture, then dab t gently on the face paying close attention to the areas affected by scars, pimples, and redness. Leave it on for 25 minutes then rinse your skin with water. Repeat this once or twice daily until you get the desired results. ******do consult a dermatologist******
