Normally there has to be gap in the disk then only it will act as a cushion. If the space is reduced then there is a problem. He needs rest, physiotherapy and exercises. If the pain radiates to the leg then he needs Mri scan.

My mother is around 78 yrs. Old and suffering from osteo arthritis and taking uniwalk tablet everyday for last 2 months but no improvement observed. Pl. tell whether it is curable.

MBBS, DNB - Orthopedics, Fellowship in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine
Orthopedist, Bangalore
Arthritis is never curable. All the treatment available now is only to slow down the process of arthritis so that joint replacement can be avoided. Just taking tablets will not do the job. She needs to do quadriceps exercises to help her slow down the process of knee degradation. The angles of the knee also have to be calculated. If the angle is severe she is likely to progress faster.

1 year ago I met with accident and my cervical pr collar bone total broken. So doctors suggest me. For surgery. And dotted the broken bone with titanium plate. And also I have hair line fracture in my right foot. So I want to know is I am able to gym right know. The plate is still attached. So suggest me. Some tips. Or suggestions what kind of things I do. Respected doctor. Also. Give me knowledge how to heel faster. addiction has been stop till after 3 months. Thank you.

1 year is a good enough time for fracture to heal. Get repeat xrays. If the xray looks normal then you can go ahead with gym. In 1 year fractures should heal 100% so there is no medication for it to heal now. You need to do exercises but only after the xray confirms it's healed.

Muscle Contusion - Causes And Symptoms!

Muscle Contusion - Causes And Symptoms!

Muscle contusion is a condition that is characterized by bruising in the muscles. It generally tends to occur in athletes who play a lot of contact sports. Repetitive blows in any part of the body may cause damage to the underlying muscle tissues. These blows may lead to internal bleeding, resulting in blood clot formation. The most common site where it occurs are the quadriceps.

The various causes of this condition are:

  1. Direct repetitive blows to a part of the muscle in contact sports such as football
  2. If you fall on a hard surface
  3. It may also occur if the muscle comes in contact real hard with sports equipment like soccer balls

The symptoms of a muscle contusion are:

  1. You may experience swelling of the muscle
  2. Excessive pain
  3. Decrease in range of motion in the concerned body part
  4. It may lead to leaking of blood vessels
  5. You may also experience hematoma where a lump is formed over the affected spot
  6. Symptoms of broken bones, dislocations and fractures may also occur

Complications: This disorder may also lead to various complications such as compartment syndrome, which leads to compression of blood vessels resulting in pain.

Treatment: The basic treatment for this condition is the RICE protocol which is rest, ice, compression and elevation. You should rest the muscle, then apply ice to the affected area to reduce the pain. You can also take NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to reduce the pain. In severe cases, the doctor may drain the lump surgically.

It is advisable to not return to your normal sports routine in order to allow the muscle to recover. If you carry on with your regular routine, it may result in further complications like the formation of scar tissue. You may undergo various stretching exercises to relieve the pain and make a gradual return to your normal sporting activities.

Use glycerine magnesium sulphate solution to soften it along with antibiotic tablet. Once the boil becomes soft it will show up an opening and then can be drained out.

You need to get a standing x-ray of both knees ap and lateral view to assess any joint angle variation first. Followed by which you need to be assessed for joint cartilage damage by Mri scan. If there is damage it can be corrected arthroscopically so that arthritis does not set in at early age and you can delay or avoid knee replacement.

Get your vitamin d levels checked and get an x-ray of the neck. If there is pain radiating to the limbs with numbness only then get mri.

You definitely need surgery or else wait for some more years and go in for a knee replacement (which is not good in the long run) as the implant lasts only for 20 years max. So better to get the surgery done.

You need to rule out arthritis. There is something called Sero positive and Sero negative arthritis. That's what has to be checked. Contact for further explanation. Its too much to explain in this short place.

Yes it's highly possible. Or it may be misplaced during her fetal stage. There is technetium dye scan to confirm that. That can be done to confirm the presence of only kidney.

Disc herniation in mri. Cervical stenosis and disc dessication diagnosed. Pain doctor recommends cervical epidural. And told me that I do not require surgery at all in future. He told me it's not very serious just compression. What to do? Will injection be safe. Will I gain a lot of weight and other side effects?

The epidural steroid injection is a one time injection and acts locally unlike the steroid tablets which are taken orally and associated with side effects. First take medicines and physiotherapy if it still does not settle down then go for cervical epidural injection no treatment is fool proof. Surgery may or may not be required that is to be decided in the future as time goes but cervical epidural definitely helps.

Please don't jump to surgery. Please take muscle relaxant and pain killer and do Physiotherapy. Back pain has many causes. The only indication for surgery with back pain is radiating pain down the legs, numbness or decreased sensation in legs or feet or muscle weakness or bowel or bladder disturbance. If you don't have any of the above please please avoid surgery. Please contact if you have any doubt or need to more details.

Causes And Symptoms Of Hip Osteoarthritis!

MBBS, DNB - Orthopedics, Fellowship in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine

Causes And Symptoms Of Hip Osteoarthritis!

When joints get inflamed, it is known as arthritis. This causes swelling and pain in the joints of your body such as the hips and the knees. When the cartilage gets damaged at the ends of bones, a type of arthritis called osteoarthritis occurs.

There are two main types of osteoarthritis:

  1. Primary: This type is more generalized. It affects the knees, fingers, hips, spine and thumb.
  2. Secondary: This type can occur after injury or joint inflammation, or as a result of any disease that affects the ligament's composition, like hemochromatosis.

How is the hip affected by osteoarthritis?
Patients have difficulties walking if they have hip osteoarthritis. Diagnosing hip osteoarthritis is difficult. It is because the pain appears in varied locations, such as the groin, buttocks, knee or thigh. The pain can be a dull throb or can be sharp and stabbing. The hip is usually stiff.

What are the causes of hip osteoarthritis?
The causes of hip osteoarthritis are unknown. However, the factors that can lead to osteoarthritis are joint injury, excessive weight and rising age.
Along with the abovementioned factors, the following may contribute as well:

  1. The joints may not have developed accurately
  2. The cartilage may have inherited the defects
  3. If the joints are too irritated due to added pressure on them, like excess body weight or stressful activities that include hip movement, osteoarthritis may develop.

What are the symptoms of hip osteoarthritis?
The symptoms of hip osteoarthritis are as follows:

  1. Joints feel stiff when you get out of bed
  2. Joints feel stiff if you have been sitting for some time
  3. The joints feel painful, swollen or tender
  4. You can hear (a "crunching" sound) or feel the bones rubbing against each other.
  5. You find yourself unable to do certain things, like putting on socks, as it requires your hips to move.

How is hip osteoarthritis treated?
The main objective of treatment is to restore the patient's ability to move around. A part of this objective includes correcting the function of the hip and managing the pain. The treatment can include:

  1. Joint care and rest
  2. To take weight off the area affected, a cane is used
  3. Pain relief that does not involve drugs
  4. Shedding excess weight
  5. Exercising
  6. Surgery
  7. Alternative and complementary therapies. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.

While having intercourse with my hubby I feel pain every time and not able to continue. Is this any serious issue?
Nope it's not a problem. Probably your not having enough foreplay or you can use a lubricating gel to make it softer and easier for the intercourse.
