I'm getting a lot of Painless lumps all over my belly arms and thighs. Please advise what is the best way to get these checked and reduced.

MD - Oncology
Oncologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Meet an oncologist and if he/she suspects then can do an FNAC or Biopsy to confirm. many a times Lipoma and neurofibromas can present as multiple lumps. these are non cancerous lesions and there surgery is indicated if the lumps are painful or causing cosmetic problem, or else it can be left over.

What are the preservative steps to treat a cancer patient and what are symptoms of cancer?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Cancer usually presents as a painless lump, unexplained weight loss, bleeding, fever, ulceration. It usually depends on organ affected. But any symptoms persistent beyond a month, please get it checked. One must eat healthy food, keep away from carcinogens, avoid consuming alcohol, tobacco, avoid radiation, and hormonal therapy. Have children before thirty years and breast feed them. Maintaining hygiene etc some preventive steps.

I have the habit of smoking but not frequently is there any symptoms for lung cancer.

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
More heavily a person smokes more risk he has for lung cancer. Also how many years one has smoked also increases the risk, on the other hand many non smokers also get lung cancer, that means there is definite risk of cancer with smoking, but it is not only the factor that may lead to lung cancer, there are other factors also that may cause lung cancer. Coming to symptoms you have asked, first thing to know is that most of the lung cancer patients get symptoms when their cancer has already reached an advanced stage. In other words, most of the patients have no symptoms when the lung cancer has just begin. The symptoms that may suggest the disease suspicion are; cough of some short duration, blood coughed out, chest pain, some times fever and loss of weight. Few patients may feel breathing difficulties. And lung cancer has cure only in early stage and not in advanced stage, so its anyone's guess that how risky it is, if someone gets symptoms of lung cancer, which occur usually at advance stage.

Did a master health check. Ultrasound report says 'Bulky uterine cervix' The pap smear test says 'Atypical Squamous cells of undetermined significance with inflammation. Repeat after controlling inflation Microscopy: Satisfactory for evaluation Transformation zone is absent, inflammation is intense, no organism/ reactive changes, Atrophy present, few cells with mild nuclear enlargement seen. What do these results mean? Does it indicate cervical cancer? What next?

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics & Gynecology, Fellowship in Infertility (IVF Specialist)
Gynaecologist, Aurangabad
Hi Lybrate user, it doesn't show cancer but you need to monitor every 6 month PAP smear and get one special test done so as to understand completely how much is the risk.

Reduce the Risk of Cancer - Get Tips!

Reduce the Risk of Cancer - Get Tips!

We live in an age where every single individual, more or less, is exposed to the risk of cancer. It is probably an unfavorable lifestyle we lead that deprives us of good health. This might alarm many but considerable changes in lifestyle can help you realize cancer as a preventable disease. Cancer does not only make you undergo severe suffering but it also affects your friends and family. The pallor of misery spreads wider than you think.

  • Abstain from tobacco: Consuming raw tobacco or smoking tobacco can be equally detrimental to your health. Tobacco increases your chances of contracting the disease. As is known, passive smoking can also affect your health adversely. Tobacco can be the potential cause behind cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, lungs, oral cavity and even the pancreas. It might harm your kidneys and cervix. It is upon you to quit tobacco at the earliest possible. One should also try and persuade friends and relatives to give up smoking.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation: Complete abstinence from alcohol might not be possible if you have already been ushered into your work- life. The society might require you to be an occasional drinker. It is important to drink in moderation. Crossing the limit can propel consequences as serious as cancer of the stomach, pancreas, liver and the heart.
  • A balanced and nutritious diet: Deciding on a plant- based diet or a Mediterranean diet can aid your fight against the risk of cancer. A Mediterranean diet will involve green leafy vegetables, lots of fresh fruits, whole grains, mixed nuts, legumes and also the use of extra- virgin olive oil. Fish can be a safe bet but red meat should be avoided. One must also try to avoid processed meat as they tend to make you prone to the risk of cancer.
  • Immunization: Hepatitis B and HPV or Human papilloma virus vaccines are extremely necessary to protect you against the sexually transmitted types of cancer.
  • Sun protection: Caring for your skin doesn't arise from vanity. Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent kinds of cancer; the chances of this disease can be restricted by remaining in shade especially during midday, by wearing covered clothes and by using a good sunscreen lotion repeatedly while outside.
  • Exercise diligently: Did you think it was okay to have weaker muscles and bulging layers of fat? If yes, you probably have grown numb to the inadequacies you face in result. Unchecked fat can lead to obesity which further complicates health conditions. Metabolic activity differs from person to person. Regular exercising can help regulate metabolism according to the needs of your body. Physical exercise protects you against the risk of breast and colon cancer. Moderate or vigorous physical activity for 150 to 75 minutes a week respectively can reduce the risk of cancer. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a oncologist.

Please advise whether Chemotherapy is to be given to him first or Surgery for Spinal Compression is to be done first? He is bedridden currently due to severe pain in the spine. His Spinal MRI & Lung scans are attached for your ready reference in this app under X-ray. Kindly advise asap.

If the spinal compression is causing symptoms like weakness of arms and legs, then surgery is needed first as failing that the paralysis will worsen. Once he recovers from that, we can immediately start the chemo. For adenocarcinoma we also have lot of targeted chemotherapy oral medicines which can be given, so ask you Oncologist to do tests for those if not already done.

Mr. Lybrate-user, at your age you neednt have to worry about enlarged prostate, I would advise you to take plenty of liquids & go to rest room only when your bladder is full, spend a bit of extra time & pass urine.

I am 50 yrs - my father recently succumbed to prostate cancer. What is your advice to prevent prostate enlargement.

General Surgeon,
I am 50 yrs - my father recently succumbed to prostate cancer. What is your advice to prevent prostate enlargement.
Prostetic enlargement is natural process of ageing. In allopathy there is no medicine to prevent enlargement uptill now. Not every enlarge prostate is cancer. But as age advances % of having prostatic cancer is more. Sometime it diagnosed after surgery when tissue send for biopsy.

Respected lybrate-userhi clearly understand that for prostate problem there is no course of medicine for certain months & then it's over. Depending on symptoms you have to continue certain medicines for lifetime that will withhold or slow down progress of prostate it's not going to melt your prostate size completely. If your symptoms are controlled by medicines continue medicines surgery is not hard & fast at all & if you r not recovering good extent with medicines or you don't want to continue medi then go for surgery choice is yours dear thanks regards.

U probably have a gynecomastia which usually begins around teen age and may reduce on its own with time. However it has nothing to do with cancer and is of absolutely no worry from this point of view.

You need to be examined per vaginally to be really sure if there is any suspicious lesion in cervix. Menstrual disorder could also be because of copper T, you need a clinical examination. Discuss with your gynecologist about intermenstrual bleeding and get yourself checked and let us know about her clinical findings.
