My grandfather who is 75 years old is suffering from esophageal cancer which has been detected recently. According to the doctor he is in the stage iii of the disease. Is there any chance of survival? We want to know details of experts in Guwahati. Please guide us.

MBBs, MD - Medicine
Oncologist, Cuttack
The Curative treatment options for esophageal cancer are either Surgery or concurrent Chemoradiation. Chemoradiation is preferred in upper esophagus and surgery is preferred in lower esophagus. But at the age of 75 he may not tolerate surgery we'll. So in my opinion chemoradiation if he is fit or only radiation may be tried in Curative intent.

My father aged 77 has recently done his psa test result is 6. 42. He has no complication of prostrate gland what to do.

M B B S, M. D (Internal Medicine)
General Physician, Nellore
Most of the time, it is asymptomatic. 6. 42 is not significant elevation (you must refer to the lab range, in any case). Repeat psa after few months. If it continues to rise, you will have to consult a urologist to get prostate biopsy.

Hi, I am 24 year old male and from past 6 years I have acute acne on my face. Also I get temporary pimple like things on my shoulders and upper back regularly, which sometimes have pus formation or they get red, bulge and disappear in a few days time. Are these age related just like acne? Will they go after sometime? Should I get checked for cancer? And What should I do for these?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Hyderabad
The eruption of pimples, acne, black heads, dark spots, scars, pores and oily face are due to excessive sebum secreted by sebaceous glands and hair follicles especially on the face.. Precautions- * Don't scratch or pinch your pimples. This will cause more damage and scars. . * Avoid fried and oily foods. * Prefer fruits and green vegetables. * When you apply any cream, sun screen and the like, clean your face at the earliest, so that there will be no adverse action of the chemicals on the delicate skin of face. *Your skin ‘breaths’ through its pores which are not to be closed for long. HOMOEOPATHIC medicines are taken internally. Hence, NO DIRECT CONTACT with your delicate and sensitive skin, thereby no problem of skin allergy .Homoeopathy has good treatment without causing adverse effects. The medicines work internally, tackle the root of the problem unlike face cream which is a surface treatment.. Take Antim crd 200—once daily in the morning. For further treatment, consult privately (Prime-Rs.149/). Acne riddance package for one month comprehensive treatment is offered at Rs 500/-

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Have you consulted any medical oncologist, and tried chemotherapy yet? sorafenib, as I know, is one of the best targeted therapies available for advanced renal cancer. Surgery, if attempted, may at best help de-bulk the tumor load. Advise consult oncologist, on the above-mentioned, for further traction. Its difficult to say exactly how long he can survive in the current context, with treatment. However, we can still attempt improving his health related quality of life and overall survival through appropriate alternative medicines that can be given as an adjunct or complementary to the conventional medical treatment. Hope this clarifies. Take care and all the very best.

Liver cancer

Cancers which starts from somewhere else and end up in the liver are not primary liver cancers. Liver cancer also known as hepatic cancer starts in the liver and not from another organ. My father is a tobacco addict. His gums became dilute along with ulcers in his mouth two days ago. He had fever and having constipation. He said that he stops chewing tobacco few days ago and then these problems occurs because of change. Is this possible. I think that he is hiding something serious from us. Maybe ulcers came first and then he leaves tobacco. How can we know that it is not a serious problem like mouth cancer. Suggest me some test or any other mean and where can we have these test.

MBBS, MD - Medicine, MD - Oncology

Prevention is better than cure mouth ulcers, gum problem, discolouration of teeth with infection occurs by tobacco. Stoping it will improve the mouth condition. Just bear the problem for few days, take preventive measures and you will see bright prospect.

What are of symptoms of oral cancer? Can it be cured? What are the foods that are essential for reducing the chances of it?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Oral cancers present as ulceration in oral cavity on tongue inner side of cheek, floor of mouth etc. One can also have a nodular growth, bleeding from it, neck swelling or nodal enlargement etc. Premalignant stages are reduced mouth opening, whitish patch, reddish patches etc. Must not take tobacco of any form, if any sharp tooth, then get it grinded or capping done, ill fitting dentures must be changed. Food containing antioxidants, lycopene have protective roles. Sprouts, leafy vegetables, turmeric, tuslsi leaves, wheatgrass etc may help.

Hi, In my right hand I have a round oval shape tumor, I am not sure what exactly it is but its easily visible, people ask questions when they see it. Its really embarrassing, I have avoided wearing half shirts and T- shirts because of this tumor. I want to get rid of it. What should I do?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, we need to know the size, consistency and for how long it is present. If it is long standing then it may not be malignant, an fnac may help in knowing about the cause. It could be lipoma, schwannoma etc benign tumour and can be simply excised by a good surgeon or a plastic surgeon for better cosmetic results. Don't get embarrassed, get it removed.

The Connection between Lung Cancer and Outdoor Air Pollution

The Connection between Lung Cancer and Outdoor Air Pollution

Lung cancer is the cancer killer of both men and women in the U.S. When you think of risk factors for lung cancer, what comes to mind? Most of us think about the risk associated with smoking cigarettes, but did you know that air pollution can also cause lung cancer? Overwhelming evidence shows that particle pollution in the outdoor air we breathe—like that coming from vehicle exhaust, coal-fired power plants and other industrial sources - can cause lung cancer. Particle pollution increases the risk of dying early, heart disease and asthma attacks, and it can also interfere with the growth and function of the lungs.

What is Particle Pollution?

Particle pollution is a mix of tiny solid and liquid particles in the air and can be made up of a number of components, such as acids, organic chemicals, metals, soil and dust particles. It can be emitted directly from wood stoves, forest fires, vehicles and other sources, and it can also form from other types of pollution that come from sources like power plants.

Why does particle pollution harm our bodies?

While breathing in larger sizes of particle pollution can be harmful to our health, smaller particles are more dangerous. Bigger particles can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, but our natural defenses help us to cough or sneeze them out of our bodies. Unfortunately, those defenses don't keep out smaller particles, which get trapped deep in the lungs and can even get into the bloodstream, causing damage to our health.

Who is most at risk?

As for who is at risk for health problems from breathing in particle pollution. Those who live where particle pollution levels are high is at risk. Some people face higher risk, including children, the elderly, people with lung and heart disease and diabetes, people with low incomes, and people who work or exercise outdoors.

How do we protect ourselves from particle pollution?

Check the air quality index forecast for the day and limit your activity if pollution levels are high. Avoid exercising along heavily traveled highways regardless of the overall forecast.

As individuals, we can play our part in reducing air pollution levels by trying to avoid creating more of it. Choosing ‘active travel’ options where possible, like walking and cycling, can help reduce pollution levels from transport and is also a great way to be more active, which is linked to a reduced risk of cancer and other diseases. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a oncologist and ask a free question.

What to Know About Melanoma

M.D., D.P.H.,
Dermatologist, Secunderabad
What to Know About Melanoma

Melanoma, also referred to as malignant melanoma, is a type of cancer. It evolves from the color or pigment containing cells known as melanocytes. Melanomas normally happen in the skin, yet may once in a while it may happen in the mouth, guts, or eyes as well. In women, it generally happens in the legs, while in men they are most regularly on the back. Sometime a mole may also raise your concern by increasing in size, developing abnormal edges, a change of color or itching and irritability. This may also prompt breakdown of the skin.

Some general facts on melanoma are mentioned below:
1. More than one million new instances of skin cancer or melanoma are analyzed every year.
2. There has been a 2000% increase in rate of melanoma since the year 1930. One out of fifty get affected by this cancer.
3. This is common in young women and causes many deaths.
4. Women below the age of forty are at more risk of getting melanoma than any other kind of cancer such as breast cancer.
5. There has been a high rise in the rate of melanoma from 1970 to 2008. There has been an 800% increase in young women and 400% increase in case of similar aged men.
6. Early recognition makes melanoma treatable. It is screened for growth very minimally.

Primary causes:
Melanomia may be caused primarily due to these causes:

  1. The most primary cause of melanoma is ultraviolet light (UV) in people with a low level of skin pigment. The UV light might be from either the sun or from different sources, for example, tanning devices. Around 25% of cases occur from or in the form of moles.
  2. Those with numerous moles, presence of the disease in family members and who have poor immunity are at more noteworthy risk to get melanoma. Various uncommon hereditary defects, such as xeroderma pigmentosum increase the risk of melanoma.
  3. The individuals who work on airplanes seem to have an expanded danger, due to more contact with UV rays.
  4. Ultraviolet UVB light of wavelengths between 315 - 280 nm from the sun react with the skin cell DNA and result in a kind of direct DNA harm called cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs).

In order to stay away or avoid melanoma, you should:

  1. Spend less time in direct sunlight and should seek shade.
  2. Avoid the sun at peak hours.
  3. Examine your skin at times for some kind of change.
  4. Keep away from tanning salons.

Melanoma is a dangerous form of cancer and causes a lot of deaths. You should stay away from anything that causes melanoma.
