Kidney Disease? 9 Things You Must Do!

DNB (Nephrology), MD, MBBS
Nephrologist, Delhi
Kidney Disease? 9 Things You Must Do!

The medical term for protein leak in urine is commonly known as Nephrosis and if the leakage is too much it is termed as Nephrotic Syndrome. Such a situation can lead to kidney failure, if not treated on time can be highly dangerous. There can be a number of causes for this condition and it is detected by carrying out a urine test. The treatment for Nephrosis is a long-term process and is done mainly to prevent kidney failure.

The treatment for Nephrosis aims at controlling the protein leak and prevent kidney failure. It is very important for people who are new to kidney disease that they know about these below mentioned nine things, in order to stay strong.

9 Important things you must be aware of kidney disease:

  1. The feeling of helplessness due to the occurrence of kidney disease can be overcome by educating yourself. Individuals should learn everything about kidney disease and can gain vital information even from the Internet.
  2. It is very obligatory that the advice of the doctor must be followed by an individual suffering from kidney disease. It is not indispensable that the kidney disease always leads to failure of kidney and to prevent it from damage, it is necessary to comply with the orders of the Doctor.
  3. It is very important that you stick to a diet, which would keep you healthy and protect your kidneys from any further damage. You should be careful about everything you eat, and you can gain assistance on your diet from a renal dietitian.
  4. When you suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease, the blood value becomes very important to gauge the condition of your disease and whether it is getting worse or stable. From time to time, the healthcare provider would check your urine and blood, and he would also monitor your blood pressure and blood sugar.
  5. You can take help from the support group and accept their assistance. Your family is your best support system at the time of need, thus involving them is very important.
  6. You must make sure that you are getting the required care you need, and you need to educate yourself by communicating as well as asking questions.
  7. You will feel much better by being active, so do things that make you happy. You can exercise regularly but after taking advice from your doctor. Your main focus must be to keep yourself healthy.
  8. A positive attitude is anytime helpful in healing a disease. You can listen to music that entertains your mind and helps you stay positive.
  9. It is not difficult to stay healthy even with kidney disease, as the positive feeling would eventually help you face your problems. You must plan ahead and be ready for kidney transplant without getting worried.

Most importantly, it is important that you spread awareness and help people tackle the situation without any difficulty. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a Nephrologist.

Apple cider vinegar helps dissolve kidney stones. It also has an alkalinizing effect on blood and urine. Mix two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of honey in one cup of warm water. Drink this a few times a day. For further queries get back to me.

I am 42 years old and for the past two year I noticed there is a pungent smell in my urine. I had done blood test and urine routine checkup but can't find any problem except my spgt value of blood is 72 (max limit 70 unite). I used to take alcohol 3 peg - twice a week. Please let me know your opinion about the probable reason?

FIMSA, MD-Nephrology, DM - Nephrology, Critical Care Medicine, MBBS

The smell is due to concentarated urine. Increase water intake to about 3litres daily. Stop consuming alcohol, tobacco, paan masala, excessive coffee/tea.

Uti is not the cause for not concieving but some uterine problems may lead to pressure on utinary bladder leading to reccurent urinary problems. Please ultrasound whole abdomen and pelvis for evaluation of both kidneys ureter urinary bladder uterus for any fibroids etc. You have mentioned urine routine report, get urine culture and sensitivity. Later cystoscopy or ct scan may be required for evaluation of urinary bladder depending on usg report. Continue to have plenty of fluids. Iv antibiotics are more effective in controlling any infection and may be considered depending on urine culture sensitivity report.

Yes, if your liver enzymes are not elevated and you have recurrent jaundice, then gilbert syndrome is a possibility. Relax, it is generally a harmless condition if not associated with other diseases. If you want to consult me, ask a private chat/call/video call through lybrate.

Immediately stop all kinds of junk food, oily food, spicy stuff. Drink lots of water, fresh juices / fruits. Start proper exercise schedule in your routine. Get the urine examination done - routine & microscopic. For local application apply coconut oil + camphor after proper cleaning and drying the area. Is there any history of white discharge or any other similar complaint. Also get your diabetes also checked. Start taking avle ka murabba immediately, although some herbal medicines might also help you but after proper history taking.

Dark-colored colas You need water to live, but when you have kidney disease, you may not need as much. This is because damaged kidneys do not get rid of extra fluid as well as they should. Too much fluid in your body can be dangerous. It can cause high blood pressure, swelling and heart failure. Extra fluid can also build up around your lungs and make it hard to breathe. If you do need to limit fluids, measure your fluids and drink from small cups to help you keep track of how much you’ve had to drink. Limit sodium to help cut down on thirst. At times, you may still feel thirsty. To help quench your thirst, you might try to: 1. Chew gum 2. Rinse your mouth 3. Suck on a piece of ice, mints or hard candy (Remember to choose sugar-free candy if you have diabetes.)

Maintain and monitor your urine alkalinity to ph 7.2 Self monitor your blood pressure also, to 110/70 • Avoid foods that are kidney toxins. An alkaline vegan diet that avoids all animal proteins (ground meats, dairy, egg whites, milk, cheese, beef, pork, chicken), soy proteins, yeast, alcohol, concentrated sugars seems to make us feel better. Fruits and Vegetables to avoid: salted foods, tomato, potato, eggplant, peppers, celery, star fruit, strawberries, plums, prunes, soy, margarine, crisco, potato chips and peanuts. While kidney functioning is still excellent, dietary things that help PKD are also high potassium foods; plant based diets with an emphasis on raw fruits and vegetables; whole food starches such as corn on the cob, sweet potatoes, rutabagas, turnips, winter squash. Include a few selected pre-soaked grains (spelt, quinoa, rye, oats, Kashi, brown rice) and pre-soaked nuts (almond, coconut, chestnut). Enjoy plenty of leafy greens, broccoli, radish, and below ground root crops. Soak all beans, legumes, grains, seeds and nuts before eating. This lowers their phytic acid content, making these foods more digestible and alkaline. Salt intake and cholesterol levels are two things that we can alter. Take personalised dietary expert advice. Thanku. Remember, milk, Coffee, Lemonade, Soup, Ice cream, Tea, Juice, Soft drinks, Gelatin, Sherbet, Water, Ice cubes, Alcohol, Popsicles, Pudding, Yogurt, Gravy are to be counted for fluid consumption.
