Weight-Loss Surgery Can Prevent Cancer (AJMC Managed Markets Network)
A study conducted at the University of Virginia Cancer Center has found that bariatric surgery, eliminated precancerous uterine growths in women with obesity who previously had them. “If you look at cancers in women, about a fifth of all cancer deaths would be prevented if we had women at normal body weight in the US,” said Susan C. Modesitt, MD, of the University of Virginia Cancer Center, and the first authors on the study. “When you’re looking at obesity-related cancers, the biggest one is endometrial cancer, but also colon cancer, breast cancer, renal cancer and gall bladder cancer. We think about 40 [percent] to 50 percent of all endometrial cancer, which is in the lining of the uterus, is caused by obesity.”

Dr. Since last few days I am huge hair fall . Also have a lot dandruff what to do?
Hair loss is common in monsoon season. Try these methods- 1. Use mild shampoo to wash hair (you can make your own shampoo using reetha and shikakai at home) 2. Stop using conditioners. Use natural conditioners like egg, yougurt and lemon. 3. Massage your scalp with a mix of oils like olive, coconut, sesame, castor oil at night. 4. Apply raw amla juice on hair thrice a week. 5. Rub your scalp with the juice of white onion. 6. Use a paste of bhringraj on hair. 7. You can use some good hair packs like - fenugreek and yogurt, egg and green tea. 8. You can rinse your hair with organic apple cider vinegar after washing your hair to maintain ph balance of your hair. 9. Hair health depends on the amount of protein in your diet. Foods like chicken, eggs, fish, nuts, dry fruits gives you the required nutrients to keep your skin and hair healthy. So consume plenty of them. Eat things rich in vitamin c like amla and oranges. 10. Drink lots of water to flush out toxins from the body.

I always work in front of system so that I got a belly. How I can I reduce the problem will you pls clarify clearly.
Hye. Thank you for your query. You must first reduce overall weight before targeting belly fat. There are many ways to lose a lot of weight fast. However, most of them will make you hungry and unsatisfied. If you don’t have iron willpower, then hunger will cause you to give up on these plans quickly plus all you lose is unhealthy muscle mass and the fats are still around. Eating sensibly and as per your body's nutrient needs will reduce your appetite significantly, Make you lose weight healthily without hunger and improve your metabolic health at the same time. Here are some tips to help you lose weight. Eat a high-protein breakfast. Eating a high-protein breakfast has been shown to reduce cravings and calorie intake throughout the day. Avoid sugary drinks and fruit juice. These are the most fattening things you can put into your body, and avoiding them can help you lose weight. Drink water a half hour before meals. Drinking water a half hour before meals increased weight loss by suppressing appetite and avoiding overeating. Choose seasonal foods. Eat smaller but more frequent meals. Eat soluble fiber. Eat fruits and vegetables. Eat mostly whole, unprocessed foods. Base most of your diet on whole foods. They are healthier, more filling and much less likely to cause overeating. Eat your food slowly. Fast eaters gain more weight over time. Eating slowly makes you feel more full and boosts weight-reducing hormones. Use smaller plates. Studies show that people automatically eat less when they use smaller plates. Get a good night’s sleep, every night. Poor sleep is one of the strongest risk factors for weight gain, so taking care of your sleep is important. It is best to do some sort of resistance training. If that is not an option, cardio workouts work too. Workout at least 4 times a week to see good fat loss.

Protein - hair is made up mostly of protein so a protein rich diet is necessary. But not if your main source of protein is a large steak. In fact, eating large quantities of meat as americans do can be counterproductive. A steak will increase testosterone levels, and this has been linked to hair loss. Eggs are an excellent source of protein (see link below on how to boil the perfect egg). Also add nuts, seeds, beans and fish. Other good choices are organic soy foods, and hemp foods. I can add too that the korean diet has little or no meat on a daily basis.

Laser treatment to decrease second chin. Good or bad? Is their any side effects? Kindly Tell me.

Laser treatment to decrease second chin. Good or bad? Is their any side effects? Kindly Tell me.
Of course it will be good to get rid of a double chin. Chin reduction with laser is not much preferred. Laser skin tightening is not a very successful technique. A minor surgery/botox/liposuction are successful techniques. If the double chin is not very big, botox will be a good option. Do go to a well qualified dermatologist.

Can I use Multaani mitti in winter to remove face pimples?
And if I can use this please tell me a proper way?
Hi. If your skin is really very oily, you can apply multani mitti on your face during winters, but reduce the frequency to once a week or may be twice, not more than that! Directions: Take 1 tbsp of fuller's earth (multani mitti) + bit of rosewater – apply this on your face till it gets dried up, then rinse it off.

Eczema is a form of dermatitis, or inflammation of the epidermis. The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent skin conditions. These include dryness and recurring skin rashes which are characterized by one or more of these symptoms: redness, skin edema (swelling), itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding. Areas of temporary skin discoloration may appear and are sometimes due to healed lesions, although scarring is rare. In contrast to psoriasis, eczema is often likely to be found on the flexor aspect of joints. Homoeopathy takes a mild and gentle approach in treating eczema. Homeopathy treats eczema in two phases: in the first phase, Homeopathic medicines control itching. In the next phase, they heal the lesions and control further progression of eczema. Homeopathic medicines also work wonders in case of eczema attended with complaints of hay fever and asthma. Prominent names in this category are Graphites, Sulphur, Petroleum, Mezereum and Natrum Mur. Homeopathic medicines for eczema are natural and therefore, safe from any adverse side-effects. They can be taken by persons of all age groups. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects

I am 27 year old woman and I am having a problem of hair loss and dandruff problem because of this I am facing too much of hair loss.?

Ayurveda, Gulbarga
Hair fall is common in everyone and it is normal if 50-100 hair strands fall per day. But hair loss happens when frequent falling of hair results in thinning of the hair in the scalp. Losing hair fast may not only be a disease but it? s also due to heredity, aging or changes in the hormones. Causes of hair loss? hairstyles: everybody wants their hair to look good by trying different kinds of hairstyles that may look stylish, but there are some hairstyles that tend to pull the hair so tightly that they cause hair fall? scalp infection: itchy scalp may be caused due to some infections like severe dandruff and ringworm, a fungus that results in red, itchy patches in the scalp and leads to hair loss? poor diet: hair loss may also be due to poor diet that misses out on vital ingredients like proteins, iron, vitamins and minerals and other micronutrients? stress: stress is a body reaction that challenges and sometimes disturbs the individual? s health. Too much of stress to the body causes the hair to fall and stop growing, which will later result in hair loss? water: we must be aware of the regular water supply in our household. It might contain chemical compounds like magnesium, copper and minerals that can harm your hair and cause hair loss? cosmetics: products that are used for straightening or coloring of the hair contain chemical compounds that can affect the hair. Even some products like hair shampoo, conditioner or serum have chemical compounds in them. Extensive usage of these can damage the hair follicles and cause hair loss? medication: medication is another problem that causes hair loss. High medication intake may result in several side effects in the body that can affect the hair roots and lead to excessive hair fall. Home remedies henna: it is a natural hair colorant and hair conditioner. Make a mixture of henna powder, one egg and a cup of curd. Mix all these ingredients well, leave it for a night and apply the henna paste on the hair the next day. Leave it on for an hour and wash with warm water. Neem: tired of your dandruff and hair fall? try neem, a natural antiseptic and anti-bacterial agent, which helps in treating the scalp and hair problem without any side effect. Boil 2 cups of water and add a handful of neem leaves in the boiling water. Leave till the water turns into greenish color. Use the neem water after the last rinse of your hair wash. This will keep your hair and scalp healthy. Aloe vera: aloe vera is a plant that contains vitamins and minerals, which is used for treating hair loss. The gel that is secreted from the plant when it is cut, can be used as a hair conditioner. Massage the gel in the hair thoroughly after taking a head bath, leave it for few hours and wash it off with warm water. Onions: onion is another home remedy that can be used to prevent hair loss. Apply the onion juice in the scalp and leave it for an hour before washing your hair.

I have anger management problems. I get angry at the slightest things and I shout. I also feel very restless. I keep on moving. I can not sit or stand at one place. I am always anxious and I can't figure out why. I want a remedy for my anger and anxiety.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
I have anger management problems. I get angry at the slightest things and I shout. I also feel very restless. I keep ...
Below I have given some anger control tips, if they don't work consult a psychiatrist and take a course of mediations to get your anger under control. All the best. 1. Think before you speak In the heat of the moment, it's easy to say something you'll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything and allow others involved in the situation to do the same. 2. Once you're calm, express your anger As soon as you're thinking clearly, express your frustration in an assertive but nonconfrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them. 3. Get some exercise Physical activity can help reduce stress that can cause you to become angry. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or spend some time doing other enjoyable physical activities. 4. Take a timeout Timeouts aren't just for kids. Give yourself short breaks during times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few moments of quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handle what's ahead without getting irritated or angry. 5. Identify possible solutions Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Does your child's messy room drive you crazy? Close the door. Is your partner late for dinner every night? Schedule meals later in the evening or agree to eat on your own a few times a week. Remind yourself that anger won't fix anything and might only make it worse. 6. Stick with 'I' statements To avoid criticizing or placing blame which might only increase tension use "I" statements to describe the problem. Be respectful and specific. For example, say, "I'm upset that you left the table without offering to help with the dishes, instead of, "You never do any housework. 7. Don't hold a grudge Forgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of injustice. But if you can forgive someone who angered you, you might both learn from the situation. It's unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want at all times. 8. Use humor to release tension Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humor to help you face what's making you angry and, possibly, any unrealistic expectations you have for how things should go. Avoid sarcasm, though it can hurt feelings and make things worse. 9. Practice relaxation skills When your temper flares, put relaxation skills to work. Practice deep-breathing exercises, imagine a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or phrase, such as, "Take it easy. You might also listen to music, write in a journal or do a few yoga poses whatever it takes to encourage relaxation. 10. Know when to seek help Learning to control anger is a challenge for everyone at times. Consider seeking help for anger issues if your anger seems out of control, causes you to do things you regret or hurts those around you.

Diet Tips to Prevent, Control and Reverse Diabetes

MBBS, MRCGP ( UK), Diploma in Diabetes (UK), DFSRH (UK), DRCOG (UK), CCT (UK)
Endocrinologist, Hyderabad
Diet Tips to Prevent, Control and Reverse Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic progressive condition of glucose abnormality. A patient with diabetes loses the capacity to regulate his blood glucose and hence there are high circulating levels of glucose in his blood. This is either due to less production of insulin hormone or the body loses the sensitivity to respond to the insulin hormone normally or both. The incidence of diabetes in general population is increasing fairly rapidly due to our erratic work schedule followed by lack of exercise and sleep.

Further, it is aggravated by our overindulgence in high sugary food and junk food. But, the good news is that you can control and even reverse diabetes (at least in the initial stages) by following some simple dietary tips. People have a misconception that “Dieting = Starving “. This is completely wrong. Further people also think that to enhance the taste of any dish it should have lot of oil, ghee, butter. This is again wrong. You can make your dish delicious even by using healthy ingredients and reducing the fats, oil and sugar in it. You can enhance the taste by using spices which are good for health as well as for digestion. Following a healthy diet means that you are eating nutritious food which is both healthy and tasty.

Here are a few dietary tips you should follow to keep your blood sugar levels in check:

  1. Include plenty of vegetables in your diet, more the better. At least half of your plate should be filled with vegetables; this can be in salad form or can also be in form of curries/subzi which is prepared using less oil. Eating vegetables helps to bulk you up, you do not feel hungry and thus you would not be consuming high-calorie food like fats or carbohydrates. Vegetables have plenty of fibre. Eating vegetables also help to release the glucose from carbohydrates slowly so that your blood glucose levels do not fluctuate much. Green leafy vegetables are excellent sources of Vitamin-A. Beans are rich sources of protein too.
  2. Carbohydrates are needed for your body; you derive the necessary energy from these carbohydrates. But you should consume them in a portion of about 1/3-1/4th of your plate – in other words, 2-3 phulkas, a bowl of rice etc. Use whole grains rather than polished grains. Whole grains of rice, wheat will release glucose into your blood in a slower fashion than polished rice or wheat. Whole grains also have much needed essential vitamins and minerals, the polished grains lose these vitamins during the process of dehusking and polishing. Include plenty of millets like jowar, bajra, Ragi/pearl millets etc. Include oats, quinoa, brown rice, broken wheat, wheat rava, etc. Avoid food items made with maida.
  3. Make sure you eat pulses. Pulses are a good source of protein. Sprouts are filled with protein and fibre. Try adding sprouts to your rice, noodles or salads. Non-vegetarian food is a very good source of protein. You can take egg, chicken and fish. Avoid mutton or organ meat.
  4. Restrict animal fats like butter, cheese. Also, restrict large quantities of oil and ghee. Avoid Vanaspati/dalda.
  5. Milk is the perfect combination of protein and carbohydrate and can control blood sugar levels. Take a glass of milk when you experience low sugar symptoms. People who don't drink milk can consume yoghurt/curd or buttermilk. Milk, curd and buttermilk are good sources of calcium.
  6. Consume fruits such as papaya, pear, orange, guava, small bowl of musk melon, water melon, apples, etc. Don’t eat fruits which have high sugar content such as mangoes or grapes, custard apple, chikoo.
  7. Foods which are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are excellent in combating diabetes. These include flax seeds and nuts. You can take 5-7 nuts everyday like almonds, cashew nuts, walnuts etc.

There are few everyday tips which you should follow:

  1. Make sure to have small frequent meals comprising of high-fibre and low in carbohydrate foods. This is to make sure that you do not experience low sugar levels as you would be taking medicines for your diabetes.
  2. Methi or fenugreek seeds are good for glucose control too. Soak one tablespoon of the seeds in 100 ml of water overnight and have it in the morning.

Tip for sticking with a diabetes-friendly diet plan:

  1. First and foremost, take small, manageable steps.
  2. Choose one aspect you want to work on. For e.g. if you eat junk food 4-5 times a week, make a conviction of consuming junk food only once a week. After you have mastered this, then go for another aspect. This is to make sure that you are not overwhelmed with the prospect of lot of changes and that you can take pleasure in the fact that you could make one positive change. This will provide you enthusiasm to likewise make other changes.
  3. The mantra that you should be following should be “small portions of food”. So instead of helping yourself to 3 ladoos or 2 bowls of kheer, you should limit yourself to 1 ladoo or ½ ladoo. That way you will still derive the pleasure of eating the ladoo (and satisfy your craving) but you would not have consumed that many calories as you would have done if you had eaten 3 ladoos.
  4. As well as following a diet, make sure that you get some exercise. It is recommended to exercise at least 45 minutes every day for 5 days of the week. You can go on fast walk, running, jogging, cycling, swimming etc.
  5. You can even break your exercise time into small chunks – maybe you can exercise 15 minutes 3 times a day. If you have never exercised start with 5-10 minutes of walking, you can then gradually increase the intensity of the exercise.

Usually, dental pain is because of infected pulp. And taking painkillers will not help much. If you need a permanent relief, you have to consult a dentist. Get your xray done and let him advice the necessary treatment. For the time being, you can take any drug having paracetamol 500 mg 2/3 times a day to manage pain. Remember, with medications pain will subside but it is not a permanent solution.
