Does a Bigger Brain Make You Smarter When It Comes To Intelligence?

DM - Neurology, MD - General Medicine, MBBS

Does a Bigger Brain Make You Smarter When It Comes To Intelligence?

When it comes to the brain and the IQ, is bigger the better? Does size really matter? Is there really a connection between the size of your brain and intelligence? With the help of findings by neurologists
and scientists, we seek to find out!

  1. Ailments and the Brain: Scientists have found that children with autism have a brain that has grown in a disproportionate manner in the very first year of their life. This prevents the child from making connections with normal behaviour. On the other hand, children and adolescents who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD have shown signs of having a much smaller brain size. Many scientists have shown that the size of the brain shrinks as we age, and this does not have any visible effect on our cognitive abilities.
  2. It's all Relative: The size of the brain does not really have a bearing on the way a person's cognition gets shaped. Even large mammals like elephants and whales are finally hunted and tamed by humans who have smaller brains in comparison. The brain is made up of billions of neurons which need to function properly. It may be seen that scientists consider the brain mass in relation with the rest of the body so as to speculate about the cognitive abilities of the person. Why is this required? Large animals need a well functioning and proportionate brain size to control and run their organs with proper cognition for satisfactory results, which is what we humans seem to have done.
  3. Neanderthal Brains: Historically, the earliest man or the Neanderthals are said to have had larger brains than we do. These people are believed to have brains that are at least 10% larger than the brains that we have in our modern times. The shape of their brain was different too. They were also heavily muscled people which had a bearing on the size and shape of the brain and bodies as well as the lean tissue within the brain. They also survived very successfully for a period of over 200,000 years, which obviously points to some form of elevated cognition, as per many scientists.
  4. Animals: While animals with small brains like lizards and reptiles do not perform too well on IQ tests, the animals with bigger brains like elephants and dolphins perform much better. But the medium sized brains of monkeys, lemurs and other animals are said to perform in the best manner. The correlation between the body size and the brain does not seem to hold good here, as per various researches.

So the verdict as per medical science and research stands divided!

Do you have an ulcer over the tongue. Watch out. If it is not healing in 8 to 10 days then consult an ent specialist asap. Because non healing ulcer could turn to a malignancy.

How can I do ma dick straight could you tell me ma dick is more in left side how to so.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

How can I do ma dick straight could you tell me ma dick is more in left side how to so.
It is due to excessive masturbation because when you masturbate with your right hand, you naturally turn your Penis towards the left, so doing this a lot makes it curve all the time. And if your left handed it will curve to the right. Its normal so no need to worry and no problem in your sexual life.-------------------------------- An absolutely straight penis is unusual. Most have a slight curve when erect. But this should not be more than about 25° from straight. If your penis bends more than this, you might have Peyronie’s disease. Peyronie’s disease most commonly occurs in men aged 50–60, but it can occur in young men and in old age. The cause is thickening of the fibrous tissue in the penis on one side. This means that, during an erection, one side of the penis cannot lengthen, and the penis will bend. The direction of the bend depends on the position of the thickening (which can often be felt as a lump or lumps when the penis is limp).----------------------- If the thickening is on the top of the penis, the erection tends to curve upwards; this is the most common type.------------------------------ If the thickening is on either side, the penis will bend towards the side that is thickened.------------------- If there is thickening on both sides, the penis may develop an hour-glass shape, but this is unusual.--------------------

Typhoid is more serious illness which is caused by bacterial infection. Presents as fever, characterized by a rising temperature over the course of each day that drops by the subsequent morning. Over the course of the first week of illness, the notorious gastrointestinal manifestations of the disease develop. These include diffuse abdominal pain and tenderness and, in some cases, fierce colicky right upper quadrant pain. - Avoid outside food. - Use boiled or filtered water. - Cleanliness and hygiene related to food/ water is the crux of protecting yourself from typhoid.

Student, 24. Was a past smoker for 4 years with 5-6 cigarettes avg. Per day. Also was a drinker, twice or thrice a week. Left smoking since Feb 2016 and reduced my drinking to once a month since then. My weight is 83 (height 6 ft), reduced it greatly from 97 since my doc advised me to do so because of a slight high total cholesterol of 212 and a little high TSH, which are both now normal to 177 total chol. And TSH normal. But I feel that it has made me a lot anxious. Before exams I feel a lot anxious with palpitation, heart thumping, cold sweat etc. Also normally if I drink a beer or two, the next morning I wake up with a great anxiety and a feeling of heartattack. I am always scared of having a heart attack. Had an ECG recently, it ws totally normal, although my BP becomes high at 130/90 when I am anxious, comes to normal 112/70. Also sometimes it pains near my armpits when I am anxious. I am too scared, always have a feeling that I am gonna have a heart attack or so. Help me, it is hell.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and shakiness. There are a number of anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among others. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. I assume your problem is health anxiety. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - Causes And Symptoms

COPD, which is short for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is a severe form of lung disease that is characterized by increased breathlessness and obstruction of airflow from the lungs. People who are suffering from COPD are at an increased risk of developing lung cancer, heart diseases and many other conditions. It includes progressive lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, few forms of bronchiectasis and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. The former two are the most common conditions contributing to COPD.

Chronic bronchitis induces inflammation in the airway that carries air to the lungs and fills it with mucus. This either completely blocks the airway or narrows it, causing difficulty in breathing. However in emphysema, the air sacs inside the lungs which inflate and deflate as you breathe in and out, lose their elasticity due to which less air comes in and goes out leaving you breathless.

The best way to treat COPD is to quit smoking. Your doctor may also prescribe you medications or ask you to enroll in a lung rehab program.
Causes:

  1. Smoking: Smoking is one of the most common causes of COPD. This is because smoking is known to destroy the stretchy fibers in people's lungs and irritate the airways. Even passive smoking is unhealthy. About 90% of the people having COPD are current or former smokers.
  2. Genetics: Some individuals suffer from COPD even after refraining from smoking. Genes might be at the helm of COPD in such a case. AATD i.e. Alpha -1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, is a protein in the lungs, the lack of which is one of the most common genetic factor causing emphysema.
  3. Environmental factors: Breathing in harmful pollutants present in your environment is also one of the causes of COPD. Fumes, dust or certain chemicals are a few examples of harmful lung irritants. Organic cooking fuel may also cause COPD. Exposing yourself to the aforementioned environmental factors for a prolonged period of time increases your risk of developing COPD substantially.

Symptoms:

  1. Shortness of breath especially after exercising
  2. Wheezing
  3. Tightness in your chest
  4. Unintended weight loss
  5. Lack of energy
  6. Frequent respiratory infections
  7. Wheezing
  8. Cough accompanied by mucus

Diagnosis:

  1. Physical Exam where your doctor monitors the functioning of your lungs.
  2. Questioning about your past health (Smoking or other harmful lung irritants).
  3. Spirometry and other breathing tests.
  4. Chest x-rays and other tests to eliminate other problems which could be causing your symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist.
