I am 56 years old and have high cholestrol and tri-gliceroiid levels which are being controlled by taking atorva t/g tablet once at night daily. I have been taking this medication for last two years. What are it's side effects and whether I can continue it's use regularly? is there any other way to control cholestrol and trigliceroid levels which does not have any side effects. Thanks.

Hello dear High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. GARLIC,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . Cap. Ecosprin gold-10 at night daily.

No abortion yet. Be very clear about it, get ultrasound repeated from a standard place at 8 weeks. It is positive for heartbeat at 8 weeks for sure, if not it's called blighted ovum syndrome. If you have no symptoms like spotting, pain lower abdomen, just relax and pray till 8 weeks when you will get to see heart beat for sure. Good luck and do share the good news with all of us here on the forum.

Check your BP regularly, if you get your BP more than 130/90 mm Hg many a time then you need regular antihypertensive medicine and not to stop it with out consulting a doctor, Otherwise you will get bad effects of this BP in your body in long run of your life. Cut down your salt intake and add more fruits and vegetables in your diet.

I am 38 years old male I have bp problem so what can should I do?

DM Cardiology
Cardiologist,
Dear , high blood pressure: secondary hypertension what is secondary hypertension? high blood pressure caused by a disease or another known medical problem is called secondary hypertension. Most cases of secondary hypertension are caused by kidney or hormonal problems. Normal blood pressures average 120/80 (" 120 over 80") but can rise and fall with exercise or rest. The pressures are measured in millimeters of mercury, with the upper number (120) being the pressure at the end of the heartbeat (systolic pressure). The lower number (80) is the pressure at the beginning of the heartbeat (diastolic pressure). If repeated checks of your blood pressure show that it is higher than 140/90, you have hypertension. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 140/90, you may need treatment for high blood pressure if you have other health problems, such as diabetes. How does it occur? many medical conditions, diseases, and medicines can cause secondary hypertension, including? narrowing of the arteries in the kidneys? narrowing of the aorta, a large blood vessel that supplies blood to the lower body? several types of kidney disease? excess secretion of a hormone called aldosterone from the adrenal gland? tumor of the adrenal gland? cushing's syndrome, a disorder in which there is too much corticosteroid hormone in the blood? medicines such as estrogen and oral contraceptives? abuse of drugs such as amphetamines, alcohol, or diet pills? pregnancy. What are the symptoms? high blood pressure may not cause any symptoms. Even secondary hypertension may have few symptoms. Symptoms are usually general and may include? headaches? dizziness? fatigue? restlessness and sleeplessness? nosebleeds? palpitations or an awareness of your heartbeat? general feeling of ill health? the need to urinate often? round or" moon" face, excess body and facial hair, and weight gain if the high blood pressure is caused by cushing's syndrome. How is it diagnosed? your health care provider will ask about your symptoms and will do a physical exam. Blood tests, chest x-rays, and an electrocardiogram may be done. Your provider will want to measure your blood pressure on three different days when you are relaxed and not in a hurry and have not had alcohol for 72 hours. Your medical history is an important part of diagnosis. Your health care provider will ask about your personal and family history of high blood pressure and heart or kidney disease. How is it treated? secondary hypertension is treated by treating the condition causing the high blood pressure. For example, if you have high blood pressure caused by cushing's syndrome, treatment for cushing's will lower your blood pressure. Your health care provider may recommend additional treatments to lower your blood pressure, such as diuretics or other medicines that reduce blood pressure. How long will the effects last? if the cause can be diagnosed and treated, your blood pressure should improve. If you are taking medicine to reduce your blood pressure and your underlying condition is treated, you may be able to cut down or stop taking the blood pressure medicine. How can I take care of myself? always follow your health care provider's instructions for taking medicines. Don't take less medicine or stop taking medicine without talking to your provider first. It can be dangerous to suddenly stop taking blood pressure medicine. Also, do not increase your dosage of any medicine without first talking with your provider? check your blood pressure (or have it checked) as often as your health care provider advises. Keep a chart of the readings? don't smoke? reduce the salt in your diet according to your health care provider's advice? with your provider's approval, start an exercise program that you can do regularly (such as biking or walking)? lose weight if you need to? limit the amount of alcohol you drink? try to reduce the stress in your life or learn how to deal better with situations that make you feel anxious? see your health care provider as often as he or she recommends. What can be done to help prevent secondary hypertension? most of the conditions that cause secondary hypertension cannot be prevented. However, regular checkups can help detect many conditions before they become serious, including those that can result in high blood pressure.

The side effects are usually given on the strip or bottle of medicines you purchase. Commonly Palpitations, Abdominal pain, Chest pain, Dizziness, Drowsiness, Fainting, Fatigue, Flushing, Headache, Lightheadedness, Limb swelling, Stomach upset are the registered detrimental side effects. These can appear immediately or after few years, depending on the tolerance levels of the patient consuming them. The best way to avoid these is to change lifestyle to bring a health condition where the need of such medicines can be totally avoided. Although at 50 age, it may take more effort and time, it is still possible to reduce dependency on any medicines or to fine natural, ayurvedic options that work well for you.

Dear lybrate-user, Welcome to Lybrate. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. I suggest you to consult a psychologist or de addiction therapist. Take care.

First, if your hdl is low, try to consume good fats from the diet like almonds and walnuts that are high in omega 3 fatty acids. Try to avoid processed foods and munch on fresh fruits and vegetables. Foods that are high in potassium are known to be helpful to bring down BP. Last but not the least engage in 30 minutes of relaxation exercise everyday to destress yourself.

Cystic Fibrosis: All You Need to Know

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
Cystic Fibrosis: All You Need to Know

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition, which primarily affects the lungs and persistence of this condition might lead to severe breathing problems and loss of lung function. If you have inherited two copies of the defective gene from your parents, you are likely to suffer from this disease. Cystic Fibrosis causes a buildup of thick mucus in your lungs and affects other organs such as the kidneys, pancreas and the intestines in your body.

It isn't very uncommon as one out of fifty people in Asia is a carrier of this disease. The disease gets its name from the cysts formed in the pancreas of the sufferer. However, this disease can be detected by testing the quantity of salt present in your sweat. Prenatal testing for Fibrosis is another method to test if your newborn is likely to contract a lung infection.

Complications faced due to cystic fibrosis include:

  1. Serious sinus infections
  2. Serious damage in lungs due to inflammation and incessant infection
  3. Malnutrition
  4. Complication in breaking down protein
  5. Respiratory tract contamination

If you observe one or more of the following symptoms, you might be suffering from Cystic Fibrosis:

  1. Salty-tasting skin
  2. Bowel obstruction caused due to meconium ileus (obstruction of the bowels)
  3. Mucus amiss in your alveoli
  4. Persistent coughing with phlegm discharge
  5. Shortness of breath while engaging in a physical task
  6. Stunted or measly growth despite healthy lifestyle habits
  7. Infertility in males

If you're suffering from cystic fibrosis, there isn't any particular treatment which is recommended due to the varying degrees of it found in people. However, consultation with a medical practitioner and an individualised treatment plan can help you minimise the risks and lead a better life.

Some therapies you can opt for are:

  • Airway clearance: This therapy helps sift the thick layer of mucus around your organs. Some people have also chosen to use the inflatable vest which vibrates around your chest, thereby, thinning and loosening the layer of mucus.
  • Inhaled medicines: Another breakthrough in the field of respiratory medicine, this method requires the patient to sniff a liquid consisting of mist, which is inhaled with the aid of a nebuliser. This method is known to be beneficial for opening airways.
  • Pancreatic enzyme supplements: Along with multivitamins, these specially designed supplements are known to cater to your pancreas with the much-needed nutrients and they need to be consumed with every meal. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist.

What is the Connection Between Diabetes and Heart Disease?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
What is the Connection Between Diabetes and Heart Disease?

Our body cells are responsible for the essential breakdown of food into energy, as it is vital for our body functioning. Cells break down food into glucose and then convert glucose into energy through insulin, which is an important hormone in the body. Diabetes is associated with the inappropriate functioning of insulin and can be classified into two types: Type I and Type 2 Diabetes. In type I Diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the cell do not use insulin properly.

Both conditions cause blood glucose levels to rise in the body. Diabetes is more than one disease as it poses serious health risks. People with diabetes are at risk of developing a host of problems such as stroke, hypertension, nerve damage, skin, eyes and kidney problems. High amount of blood sugar level can cause damage to the blood vessels leading to blocked arteries restricting blood flow to the heart. Poor blood glucose control can lead to high blood pressure and other blood lipid abnormalities including high levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and triglycerides.

The link between cardiovascular disease and diabetes is well established by medical science. It is estimated that 65% of people with diabetes die of heart disease, which makes it a leading cause of all deaths among diabetic patients. Doctors refer to this connection as DHD- Diabetic Heart Disease. The term Diabetic Heart Disease covers coronary heart disease; narrowing of the arteries, heart failure; minimising heart’s capacity to pump enough blood and diabetic cardiomyopathy; alteration in the structure and function of the heart.

A sedentary lifestyle with little or no physical activity, smoking, stressful life and unhealthy eating habits all contribute to weight gain, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes. Thus, weight and lifestyle issues management is the best way to prevent and control such health risks.

Let’s look at some simple but effective ways towards a healthy lifestyle:

  1. Physical exercise: Adopt a 30 minute exercise rule to remain healthy and fit. For diabetic patients, a morning and evening walk is highly recommended. You could walk, run, gym, climb stairs, do yoga, aerobics or other physical activity that interests you.
  2. Eat healthy: Avoid fried and packaged foods as they are full of fats, salt and sugar. Include seasonal vegetables and fruits in your diet and drink plenty of water. Dieticians recommend eating a heart-healthy diet including superfoods like broccoli, spinach, berries and fibre rich meal.
  3. Weight management: Keeping weight under check is an effective way to prevent the risk of heart diseases. Consult a dietician for a customised diet plan as per your medical condition.
  4. Be positive: Stress is a silent killer and a major contributor to all lifestyle diseases. Remain calm and manage your negative thoughts to overcome stress.

Health is the ultimate treasure you have! Preserve it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.
