Please my doctor says that I don' t have any issue in throat but I am still feeling pain and sore throat. Please please advice what could be the reason of the throat pain. Thanks in advance.

Hi throat pain can also be due to reflux. Reflux can sometimes cause ear pain also. Treating reflux is the only solution if there is no infective pathology seen inthe throat.

What is the effective method of cleaning ear wax at home? What kind of drops are to be used?

MBBS, MS - ENT

What is the effective method of cleaning ear wax at home?
What kind of drops are to be used?
Wax dissolving ear drops like dewax or waxonil ear drops should be used for 1 week, 3drops 3 times a day. This makes the wax soft. Then get it cleaned by an ent. Avoid using buds as they push the wax further in. Also avoid putting hydrogen peroxide in the ear.

Hi , I am going to undergo a tonsillectomy. Do I need to be afraid of that operation. Is that so painful.

MBBS
General Physician, Muzaffarpur
It would be done under proper anaesthesia so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Post operatively you need to have cold things like ice cream for better hemostasis and healing.

We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray) & clinical examination to decide upon treatment. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Hi lybrate-user, many patients have congenitally single kidney. They usually have no problem. However, it is important to take certain precautions. 1. Avoid drugs that can injure kidneys, eg. Pain killers (like diclofenac, brufen etc.), some antibiotics like gentamicin, amikacin etc. 2. Prevent lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension that can damage kidneys by taking healthy diet and walking regularly. 3. Protein intake needs to be reduced only in certain stages of chronic kidney disease. In your situation, you can take 50 to 60 grams protein per day. 4. Please do ultrasound of kidneys and get serum creatinine & urine protein test done every year. 5. Reduce animal proteins, drink 3-4 lite fluid per day and increase fruits and vegetables. Wish you good health,

KNOW ABOUT Nose Bleeding

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Nosebleed is a common problem and is often because of a respiratory illness or dry conditions. Nasal drying is common in the hot summer months because of the extreme temperature and dry air is due to use of air conditioners. Here are some typical reasons for nosebleeds:

• Nasal allergies
• Blowing your nose too hard or trying to remove something from inside the nose
• A result of “popping” the ear
• Nasal exposure to chemicals
• Frequent sneezing or having an upper respiratory infection
• Use of nasal spray or a blood-thinning drug, such as aspirin
• Inhaling air that is extremely dry or cold
• Having recent surgery on the nose or elsewhere on the face
• Breaking the nose or a similar injury
• Uncontrolled blood pressure

Bleeding can be controlled by direct pressure i.e. compression of the nostrils grasping the alae distally so all mucosal surfaces are opposed. Direct pressure should be applied continuously for at least 5 minutes, and for up to 20 minutes. The patient should be encouraged not to check for active bleeding. Patients who are properly instructed may control their bleeding while the evaluation gets underway.

Other maneuvers include bending forward at the waist while sitting up (to avoid swallowing blood), placing a plug of cotton wool or gauze into the bleeding nostril (sometimes coated with antibiotic ointment), expectorating out blood that accumulates in the pharynx and a cold compress applied to the bridge of the nose.

These maneuvers also should be taught to high-risk patients for use at home. Initial treatment with two puffs of oxymetazoline may hasten hemostasis

I suffer from sinusitis. Is surgery the only way to cure this problem? If not, how can I cure sinusitis?

MBBS, PG Diploma In Emergency Trauma Care, Fellowship in Diabetes
General Physician, Delhi
There are many options to cure sinusitis. Surgery is the last option. First get ncct - coronal and axonal done. Depending on the reports of ncct, it will be decided if you need medical treatment or surgical treatment.

I am a 22 years old male. I have been feelings ng weak for the past 1 months. I have also lost my diet for meals but feel hungry now and then at odd hours. Something I also get dizzy especially when it's hot or sunny.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye, Thanks for the query. Not eating the right foods at the right time usually causes reduced stamina and deficiency of nutrients. It is important to know that just eating two heavy meals a day will not fulfill your nutrient needs. Most often we skip meals especially when at work or in college. We start our day on empty stomach but our work or stress or activity is never reduced. This causes weakness and lack of energy levels. Food is our source of energy and if you don't eat well as per your needs you are going to get deficient in many nutrients. So, start by eating the right foods at the right time. Eat meals at frequent intervals. Eat a mid meal between each main meal. Avoid junk foods. Include dairy, eggs, nuts, fruits in your meals. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Sleep well.    Exercise at least thrice a week.

Hello Dheeraj, When water enters ears while swimming ,its easier to bring it out soon after swimming. Never use cotton or earbuds as it pushes water and wax further inside. Follow the instructions below: Use a solution made of one part rubbing alcohol and one part white vinegar. Place a few drops into your ear, then let it drain out. The acid in this mixture acts to break down the earwax that may be holding in some water in the ear canal, while the alcohol dries quickly and takes the water with it. Remember not do this procedure if you have a punctured eardrum. Tilt the affected ear downward, then place your palm over the ear. Pump your palm to create a vacuum. Blow-dry the ear. Use the coldest setting possible. Take over-the-counter eardrops for clearing water from your ears. Lie down on your side with your ear facing down. Try chewing or yawning.

Drink lots of water. Wait for 3-4 days and it should settle down. These kind of effects are seen in the initial few days of taking bupropion. In the unlikely event that the problems continue beyond a week, a change of medications may be needed.
