My throat is itching most of the day, more itching at night. I then have difficulty breathing when sleeping.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
My throat is itching most of the day, more itching at night. I then have difficulty breathing when sleeping.
Itching is basically the dry saliva and mucus of the mouth which is irritating in the mouth and produces itching and irritation, this is the reason could be for the cough without infection in the mouth so first thing you should get thyroid testing done, and than you may need to hydrate up your body because any symptoms of throat comes with symptoms of nose also dear the symptoms you are getting are due to dryness of the mouth, this is because of lack of mucus in the mouth which is protective layer of our mouth, and is being produced in the mouth by glands which will be helped by good and healthy blood supply to the glands, blood with good blood cells will take oxygen to the gland and gland works, they require oxygen in ample of amount, so if you do not take iron diet on daily basis than this will lead to less of mucus production and hence lead to dryness and thick mucus problem, this thick mucus leads to irritation in mouth hence leads to itching in the mouth, start taking good iron diet on daily basis, and shakes, avoid salty and spicy food.

There are several things you can do to prevent a cold—they are all easy and inexpensive and worth the effort. Wash your hands often-with soap and warm water. The germs stick to the soap and get washed down the drain. Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. Cover Your Mouth and Nose When You Sneeze or Cough- Clean your hands every time you cough or sneeze. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth-Germs are often spread when a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Stay Home When You’re Sick-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, don’t smoke, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food so you can fend off viruses. Take healthy balanced diet...like boiled eggs.daily in breakfast .. Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. Routinely clean and disinfect common areas of your home. Treatment:There is a gradual 1-3 day onset of symptoms. It often starts out as a sore throat, then a fever and coughing. As the cold progresses, the nasal mucus may thicken which is the last stage before the cold dries up. A cold usually lasts for a week or two. But, taking good care of yourself at home can relieve symptoms and help prevent complications if you are otherwise healthy. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn’t need medical treatment. Complications include bacterial infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs which must be treated with antibiotics. In general you should: • get plenty of rest so your body can use its energy to fight the cold • staying at home will keep you from spreading germs • drink plenty of liquids like herbal tea or hot broth/vegetable/tomato soups. Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can keep you from getting enough sleep Runny Nose and Sneezing- if you have post nasal drip, gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. Drink extra fluids. (avoid sugary and high calorie drinks) Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation • Tablet Nasorest-P once/twice daily may reduce the amount of mucous. • Humidify the rooms you are in most or your whole house if possible. • Do steam inhalation once or twice daily Cough-Coughing is how your body gets rid of debris and mucus from the airways during a viral infection. Unless your cough is severe or is keeping you from resting at night, it is better not to treat it. A severe cough can be treated with a cough syp, but don’t try to completely stop the cough. There are two types of coughs. Productive and non-productive or dry cough. Non-productive, dry cough. A dry, hacking cough may develop near the end of a cold. Dry coughs that follow viral colds are often worse at night and can last up to several weeks. Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough. Cough drops can sooth an irritated throat, but most don’t affect the cough. Productive cough. A productive cough is one that brings up mucus from the back of the throat or the lungs. Productive coughs should not be suppressed to the point they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. Drink lots of water if you have a productive cough. Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

Hi I am suffering from tinnitus in my left year since April. I have consulted ent doctor. They have given some medication. But while going for audiometry test. That person has told me that tinnitus can't be cured. Doctors prescribe medicines only for patient satisfaction. Is it true? Is there any natural way to cure this. Please help me.

MS - ENT, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Mumbai
tinnitus is a problem which can be countered or over powered by simply giving yourself to understand that it is not a disease . it is not something life threatening. once your mind is set to that there is nothing to cure at all .

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Audiologist, Delhi
Hi lybrate-user, you r recovered from dizziness problem, good. But tinnitus and hearing problem are still there, ok. Listen, you r suffering from tinnitus in left ear, and meniere's disease is still there, so you must reduce sodium intake in your diet and try to avoid noisy places as possible by u, because the main reason behind tinnitus is noise exposure. And divert your attention from tinnitus sound as far as possible. Stay stress free all the day, also anxiety can increase tinnitus problem. Ok. Try to avoid caffeinated products, cola etc. Usually there is no remedy for tinnitus, but the above precautions can prevent you from more irritating perception of tinnitus sounds. And hearing loss is due to meniere's disease and lower frequencies are mostly affected, so get your ear checked and continue the above explained precautions for better result.

Is there a treatment for tinnitus problem? I understand there is a package'Tinnitus terminator' which help to overcome this problem.

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
There as yet no satisfactory treatment. But depending on the cause certain cases can be treated. What I shall suggest that you can put on some light music at a low volume when you are in a quiet area like in the bedroom. It should be just below the level of the noise happening in your ear. This will dump the noise effectively.

I have done two brain MRIs in the last 15 months and have been told by the doctors that due to combination of lacunar infarcts observed in the frontal lobe and mucosal thickening in left maxillary sinus, has resulted in low blood flow to the brain. This is caused vertigo and there is no cure.

Vertigo is caused due to disturbances in semicircular canals of vestibular apparatus of the internal ear, blood supply to the posterior part (back) of brain especially pons, medulla and cerebellum. Frontal cortex is not concerned with this type of function. Blood supply to brain is through carotid artery which does not pass through maxillary sinus and its mucosal thickening should not be a reason for decrease in blood supply or lacunar infarctions. While there may not be a reason to deny the facts of the MRI reports but the explanations offered to you sound to be least plausible. Frontal cortex is mostly controlling emotional functions and memory of the person.

Blocked Nose: 5 Remedies For It!

Blocked Nose: 5 Remedies For It!

A blocked nose is not only annoying, but is extremely discomforting. Several reasons can be held responsible for it and common cold is certainly not the only one. Some other reasons include:
1. Flu
2. Allergy
3. Sinus

Therefore, the remedial measures for blocked nose vary, depending on the cause that led to it. Some of the ways by which you can redress this problem are:

  1. Use a humidifier: Sinusitis is often held responsible for a clogged nose, a condition that is almost always accompanied by severe pain. In such a situation, placing a humidifier in a room proves to be extremely beneficial. This machine treats blocked nose by converting the water to moisture. This fills up the room and significantly increases the humidity of the room. Therefore when you breathe, the humid air soothes the inflamed blood vessels in the nose and helps you to breathe properly.
  2. Take a hot shower: When you find it difficult to breathe, a quick hot shower can go a long way in curing the discomfort. The logic that operates is the steam generated from the hot shower thins the mucus and also considerably reduces the inflammation in the nose, allowing you to breathe normally.
  3. Drink lots of water: Though the suggestion may seem incredible, drinking water actually helps in un-blocking that blocked nose. When you drink a lot of water, the mucus in the nostrils is thinned, at the same time it pushes back the accumulated fluids, thereby curbing the condition of blocked nose.
  4. Using a saline spray: This is one of the most ancient and trusted ways of treating blocked nose. By administering a saline or a nasal spray, the moisture in your nostrils increases and radically diminishes the inflammation.
  5. Use warm compresses: Using a warm compress has been the most reliable form of medication in times of high temperature and also at times of blocked nose. The compress that was dipped in hot water, when placed on the nose and forehead helps to unblock the nasal passages. The soothing effect of the warm compresses reduces the inflammation and facilitates the process of breathing.
