Usually children eat appreciate to their requirements but not up to the expectations of parents. If weight is appropriate for age, nothing needs to be done. In that case, stop worrying and start enjoying meals with children. They will learn how to eat by imitating you. You eat, whatever you feel your daughter should eat, with her.

This is normal dear. It is possible sometimes that by birth you have less fatty tissue insulation in hands. Where veins don't have that subcutaneous fat base which fixes the vein and allows less movement. But if it is not so than also is fine, it is not counted as any disease at all. So enjoy.

How to Deal With Trauma in Your Child's Life?

From terrorism to natural disasters, there are a number of traumatic events that constantly hurl themselves at us. Given the amount of stress it causes an adult, imagine how a child can process this information. Often traumatic events that occur in childhood can trigger phobias and anxiety disorders that last a lifetime if not dealt correctly.

Each child responds to trauma in a different way depending on the circumstances and their age and personality. What is common is that all children turn towards their parents and teachers for support in these situations. Hence, it is important to understand how to help your child deal with traumatic events. Here are a few steps you should follow.

Provide comfort
The first thing to do in a traumatic event is to reassure and comfort the child. Reinforce your child's sense of security by following a normal schedule and maintaining regular eating and sleeping habits. Encourage your child to talk and ask questions and discuss the situation with them in a way appropriate to your child's age and concerns.

Accept their needs
Children show the need for reassurance in different ways. For some, it may be the need for extra physical contact in the form of hugs while for others it may be ensuring that their favourite teddy bear is with them constantly. Be patient with children and indulge their needs in such situations.

Limit the amount of information available
Media often magnifies a traumatic event making it all the more difficult for a child to apprehend. Children can often be mislead or frustrated by media coverage of a traumatic event. Thus, it is a good idea to limit the use of television, radios and internet. As far as possible do not let your child watch the news alone.

Stay in touch
If your child goes to school, his or her teacher is the parent figure at school. Stay connected with your child's teachers and the other adults in their life to monitor changes in behavioral patterns.

Create distractions
If left alone with nothing to do, a child's mind will dwell on the trauma. Encourage them to find a hobby to cope with the negative emotions. Music and art are two good outlets for stress. You could also play board games, read or play outdoors to distract them.

Get professional help
Sometimes you may need help to deal with a traumatic event in your child's life. If your child shows signs of behavioral changes, academic problems, emotional outbursts, anxiety, depression, insomnia or social withdrawal; you should consult a professional counselor.

Breastfeeding of Infants Born to Hepatitis B Mother

What is hepatitis b?
Hepatitis b can be defined as the viral infection of the liver. It is caused by hepatitis b virus (hbv). It is the most common type of virus and can affect a person adversely if left undetected and untreated.

What are the risks to the baby born to hepatitis b mother?
If the mother has hepatitis b, there are chances of transfer of virus to the baby. Transmission can occur while the baby is in utero, during delivery and in postpartum period. Most of the cases are due to transmission of virus at the time of delivery due to exposure to blood. That virus can infect the baby and can cause hepatitis in the baby. Baby can become a chronic carrier and can develop liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in later life.

Does breast milk contain hepatitis b virus?

Yes, hbv can be found in the breast milk of 70% of carrier mothers, but there is no evidence of transmission of hepatitis b through mother's milk.

Can hepatitis b positive mother give breastfeed to her baby?

Yes, according to who and unicef guidelines breastfeeding can be given, as breast milk is the natural and optimal feed to the baby. Mother feeding in hepatitis b positive mother infant can be made more safe by immunisation of the baby with hepatitis b vaccine and hepatitis b immunoglobulin. Hepatitis b vaccine and immunoglobulins are to be given within 12hrs of delivery and the vaccine should be repeated after 1 month and 6 months. This will substantially reduce perinatal transmission and virtually eliminate any risk of transmission through breastfeeding or breast milk feeding. Immunization of infants will also prevent infection from all other modes of hbv transmission. Exclusive breast feeding is to be continued till 6 months of age. Start complementary feeds at 6 months of age and along with that continue breast feeding for two years.

What to do if hepatitis b positive mother has sore or cracked or bleeding nipples?

Mothers should breastfeed the baby carefully so that she would not get cracked or sore nipple. In case she gets sore or cracked or bleeding for nipple, stop breast feeding and take treatment for sore nipples. Because sore nipples or cracked nipples can transmit the virus through exposure to blood. During that period she should express the milk and discard it. She should resume the feeding after the nipples are healed.

Report of any test whether it is eeg or any other, is to be correlated with clinical findings. If faint is not suggestive/ leading clue to epilepsy type ailment, even abnormal report should not be discarded outright. Get an other eeg done and consult pediatrician. Fainting is not necessarily epilepsy. Its diagnosis solely depends on nature of faintness since there is no sign of this disease. In this case faint may be due to hot weather leading to dehydration.

Generally there is no fever after anti rabies injection, in case of fever use plain paracetamol. Once started continue anti rabies vaccine 0-3-7 days (if no signs of rabies in animal then convert it to prophylactic vaccination by giving at 30 days) 14-28 days. 90 days booster.

Constipation is children is problem you can handle by modifying diet. Give extra water to the baby, add fibre by giving fruits such as papaya, mosmbi, banana. Also focus on giving more home food such as dal rice, khichdi, roti etc rather than milk and dairy products. check out the anal area. If there is a fissure, you need to see a doc to get it treated. Dont make the baby anxious about the potty. Potty training takes time.

5 Healthy Habits That Every Child Should Follow

Few things in life take longer than habits to be inculcated and eventually to die out. Every parent tries in his or her way to teach the child certain healthy habits, those that they wish would be followed long enough to be internalized by them. Certain healthy habits that every child should follow are:

1. Include a lot of vegetables in the diet: There is an array of vegetables available in the market, which is replete with rich nutritional values. Though children are generally averse to the idea of eating vegetables, it is your duty to inculcate in them the habit of eating vegetables and constantly remind them of their rich nutritional benefits.

2. Never skip breakfast: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and is often the most ignored. Most children have the propensity to skip breakfast if they are late and generally they are seldom reprimanded by their parents. As a parent, you must make it a point not to take this lightly and severely insist on a healthy breakfast every morning.

3. Indulge in physical activities: With the advent and easy access of technology, going out to play in has become a distant reality, one that is never explored. However, it goes without saying that nothing can substitute the physical and mental benefits that a physical activity entails. It not only keeps the body of your child fit but also helps in keeping the mind fresh.

4. Read daily: Few things in life can be as rewarding and fulfilling as reading a book. However the habit does not come easy and as a parent it is your responsibility to induce in them this. Try to make your child read a few pages everyday till they take it up themselves out of their volition.

5. Drink water and skip the soda: The many flavored sodas, which are available serve as a more palatable alternative to the drab water for the children. Though the choice may seem convenient, it must be snipped off right from the beginning. Sodas are packed with harmful preservatives and should be duly avoided by children. Instead, they must choose the bottle of water to quench the thirst.
