Hi I am pregnant and have thyroid. Can eat fortified cereals and which one is good for me.
Hello, If thyroid is under control , then as a pregnant woman , you should take utmost caution of what she eats. A nutritious diet rich in proteins, iron, calcium and omega 3 fatty acids is recommended. Overall besides normal food make sure she takes a big glass of milk daily, 2-3 eggs in a week, chicken/ fish twice a week, take 2 helping of fruits and salads daily. Taking 5-6 almonds alone a piece or two of walnuts daily should overall take care of your nutritional requirements. Hope this helps you.

Warning Signs Your Mouth Could be Telling You this Summer!

Warning Signs Your Mouth Could be Telling You this Summer!

The horrible effects of summer heat on the body are fairly well known: sunburn, heat stroke and serious dehydration can be life threatening illnesses. But did you know that paying attention to your oral cavity can tip you off and help prevent the onset of serious injury? Don’t let the summer heat get you down! This week, explore with us how your mouth can serve as a pathway to healthier, safer living in hotter months.

First things first

You know heat stroke (or sun stroke) is bad, but what is it exactly? Heat stroke is usually the result of lengthy exposure to the sun.  For various reasons, the body fails to sufficiently sweat, leading to extremely high internal body temperatures.  It is a condition that is typically rapid in onset, requiring immediate medical attention. Left untreated, it can result in multiple organ failures.

The Warning Signs

Many warning signs of summer illnesses actually start in the mouth. Though no two patients experience the same constellation of symptoms, many initially report problems with thirst, dry mouth and dry tongue before the onset of more worrisome indicators.

However, other important signs of dehydration should not be overlooked. These include dry skin, fatigue, light-headedness, headache, dizziness, confusion and/or increased heart rate and breathing.

Drink up

The most important thing you can do to prevent summer heat illnesses is drink plenty of fluids. This is especially true if one has been outdoors working or playing in the sun. Establish a schedule and drink plenty of fluids at regular intervals. You should also be drinking even if you do not feel thirsty or dehydrated. For an extra push, drink solutions like Pedialyte or Gatorade. These help maintain electrolyte balance during extreme heat. Avoid alcohol consumption, as liquor often dehydrates the body and leaves it wanting of critical fluids.

How much is Enough?

During extreme summer heat, you should be drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. But that is not a fixed amount. If you have been outdoors and active, you may need to drink much more. Pay attention to your body to determine how much fluids you should be drinking. Remember, the warnings signs are listed above.

On 5th november, my boyfriend masturbated, wiped his hands thoroughly with tissue after an orgasm and fingered me about 20 minutes later. He said his hands were completely dry. My last period was on 18th october. Is there any chance I could be pregnant? I have irregular periods, and have been pretty stressed out for the past 2 weeks because of final exams and excessive traveling. I have some cramps and feel a bit nauseous. Also, I have not been exercising for the past month while I used to do so every day. I used to have polycystic ovaries. Thank you.

Almost 100% protection can be achieved with condoms if it fits well and is used from beginning to end. It does not have any side effects on either partner. Moreover it also protects against infections which might affect fertility in the future.

Is bed rest necessary after ivf pregnancy? Is light work like cooking. Allowed. I conceived by ivf in aug 16. But gone through pre term delivery in 5th month. I did job. So please suggest me for next attempt. What are the precautions?

Obstetrician, Pune
Bed rest along with mental peace is of utmost importance in pregnancy. In your next pregnancy you may need cervical stitch as a prophylactic measure. Your obstetrician will explain you the appropriate time to put the cervical stitch and procedure of cervical stitch and will guide you regarding the same. I will suggest you to take a leave from your job once you become pregnant. You should avoid strenuous work and long and tiring journey once you become pregnant. No sexual intercourse once you become pregnant.

Ergonomics At Workplace - Can It Help?

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Delhi
Ergonomics At Workplace - Can It Help?

It has been studied by the ministry of labor and employment that any average working Indian spends approximately 2,000 hours every year at their workplace, and all these hours can take a toll on your back, eyes, arms and neck.

Exposure to adverse working conditions can always result in long-term or temporary injury. Moreover, poorly designed working environments can also reduce your efficiency, cut down on your productivity, resulting in a loss of income. It can also increase your medical claims or land you up with a permanent disability.

So the final goal of ergonomics is to create a working zone that can incorporate the variety of human capabilities and limitations to prevent any mishap; primarily musculoskeletal disorders.

How musculoskeletal disorders happen?
Musculoskeletal disorder or MSD is a family of nerve, muscle and tendon disorders that are caused, aggravated or accelerated by repeated body movements; particularly when high forces, awkward postures, vibrations, contact stresses and exposures to cold are evident. As your wrist, hands, back and neck are construed of a complex network of bone, nerves, tendons and fluids, irritation of these tissues during certain work activities can, over the course to time, result in elevated fluid pressure around the nerves. Carpel tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow and spondylosis are the most common examples of work related MSDs.

So applying ergonomics to the place of work will certainly help both you and your employer strike a proper balance between staff capability and work requirement and so lessen the likelihood of such disorders.

How to develop a productive partnership?

  • Poor working conditions are bad news both for you and your employee, which can result in physical anomalies and adverse economic impacts.
  • So it’s only a happy partnership between the employers, staffs and ergonomic specialists that can help you redesign your workplace in order to meet the potential and capabilities of every employee.
  • To meet the above stated requirements, you should always consult a professional in the field of ergonomics to analyze specific working environments and recommend what’s best for your needs. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.
