Ways to Protect the Teeth of Your Little One

Ways to Protect the Teeth of Your Little One

Children are much more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disorders than grown-ups. This is because the gum and teeth in toddlers are very delicate. Moreover, children are more attracted to sweets and other food items, which cause damage to the teeth.

Here are several ways to protect the teeth of your little one:

  1. Have a dental checkup: You should take your child to a dentist on his first birthday. Early prevention is important as any kind of problem in the teeth will be detected and this will save you from a lot of trouble in the future.
  2. Teaching healthy habits: Brushing is very important and you should teach your child to brush regularly, more than once a day. Before the development of teeth in your baby, you should brush his gums gently by using water on a soft baby toothbrush or with a clean and soft cloth. After developing teeth, brushing must be practiced with delicate toothbrushes and fluoridated toothpaste. If several teeth touch against each other, you should use flossing. Brushing is essential before going to bed, and no food should be taken after brushing.
  3. Prevent "baby bottle decay": You should not let your child go to sleep with a bottle of juice or milk. The sugar contained in these liquids sticks to the child's teeth, which activates bacteria and may lead to tooth decay.
  4. Avoid giving juice to your child: Juice may be healthy for the body, but it leads to tooth decay in little kids. The amount of regular juice intake should never be above four ounces.
  5. Avoid excess use of a sippy cup: Sippy cups enable children to shift from bottles to a glass. However, all day long usage of sippy cups should be restricted as it may cause decay on the front and back portions of teeth, when the drinks are rich in sugar.
  6. Be careful about sweet medicines: Many medicines meant for children are sugary and stick to the teeth, increasing the chance of cavities. Several antibiotics cause overgrowth of Candida or yeast and cause an oral disease known as oral thrush. This disease causes creamy patches on the tongue. In case your child needs sweet medicines, brushing should be increased.
  7. Stop using a pacifier by the age of 2 or 3: Pacifiers are good for children, but using pacifiers for a long period of time affects the lining of teeth. The shape of the mouth may also change. Hence, do not let your child use pacifiers after 2 or 3 years of age.

Children are quite prone to teeth disorders and decay in the teeth. Hence, measures must be taken to protect the teeth of children from any kind of disorder.

Hi, for the past 3-4 months I've had a white/yellowish coating on my tongue that doesn't go away even after brushing twice a day and scraping it with a tongue scraper multiple times a day. I even used Betadine gargles for 3 days and took Fluconazole for a week, but it didn't help. It keeps resurfacing and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I've been traveling for a shoot for the past few months in villages and haven't been eating properly, so have lost weight and my immunity has probably been affected by that as well as I had a cough that lasted almost 20 days. Would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Black hairy or furry tongue or yellow furry tongue: This is caused by dead skin and food buildup, and occurs commonly when the papillae become enlarged, swollen, or rough. When this buildup is paired with bacteria or yeast, it can cause the tongue to look yellow or black and hairy.White tongue is the result of an overgrowth and swelling of the fingerlike projections (papillae) on the surface of your tongue. The appearance of a white coating is caused by debris, bacteria and dead cells getting lodged between the enlarged and sometimes inflamed papillae.

Kindly apply orahelp gum paint twice daily for 15 days. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene. Also notice that you are not constipated, stressed or having lack of sleep as these are few of the reasons for ulcers. Avoid hot and spicy food as this may irritate the ulcers. Take multivitamins for a month.

You shld rush down to dentist and get it fixed. If it is just a part of the tooth you just have to get simple procedure called tooth bonding. If it has reached till nerves then you mite required root canal treatment. Dentist may take xray for further diagnosis.

Chewing a sugarless gum after your meal for around 20 minutes freshens your breath and also make the leftover food particles cling to it.

Dentist - Dr. I heard there is a technology thru wish a tooth can be screwed into the gums instead of using a bridge. Can you plz let me know where could I get it done in Chennai and what is it called in medical terminology ?

MBA (Healthcare), BDS

Its called as dental implants. Instead of the tooth root implant is placed in the bone and cap is given to it for the replacement of missing tooth by fixed option. The strength wil be equal to the natural teeth bcoz support is coming directly from the bone like natural teeth.

The purpose of the present study was twofold: (1) to investigate how many diabetic patients and types of cases that are treated with dental implants in our clinic; and (2) assess the outcome of such treatment. Medical records from 782 patients were examined in patients treated by the Brånemark method for partial or total edentulism with implant supported bridges. From these records, 25 patients (3.2%) with diabetes before implant treatment (136 implants) were identified and further studied with respect to age, gender, type of diabetes, treated jaw, degree of edentulism, bone graft, implant survival, periimplant inflammation, bleeding on probing, and radiographic bone loss. Furthermore, the patients' opinion about the outcome of the treatment was registered. The implant success rate was 96.3% during the healing period and 94.1% 1 year after surgery. Of all 38 bridges, one was lost. Few complications occurred and all patients, except for one, were satisfied with the treatment. Today, diabetic patients are being treated successfully for all types of edentulism, including bone-grafting treatment. Diabetics that undergo dental implant treatment do not encounter a higher failure rate than the normal population, if the diabetics' plasma glucose level is normal or close to normal as assessed by personal interviews.

(a) Avoid Certain Foods/Drinks When Possible: We’re not asking you to give up your morning coffee, just to reduce the intake of the above foods as much as possible. Sometimes simply being aware can help us make better choices.-------- (b) Drink Water: After you’ve consumed a tooth-staining food or drink try to immediately follow it with a glass of water. Swirling water around your mouth can drastically help clear away the acids or staining. This simple step is free and easy, and can drastically help reduce tooth discoloration.---------------- (c) Proper Dental Hygiene: Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups help keep teeth healthy for a lifetime. Develop these habits early and you’re less likely to have dental problems down the line.------------- (d) Teeth Whitening: The good news is that there are many options available to whiten teeth. Some can be done at home while others can take help of Homoeopathic medicines.------------ Homoeopathic medicine------------ HEKLA LAVA TOOTH POWDER (WHEEZAL) Scrub teeth daily night------------ IN morning use any good quality tooth paste----------------- RINSEOUT (SBL) Gargles 20 drops in 20 ml luke warm water. Gargles 3 times daily while holding water for 20 seconds in mouth esp. After meals.------------

Bleeding can be caries or gum issues. If its caries you need to undergo a root canal procedure followed by cap on it. This procedure may require 5-7 visits to a dentist depending on the severity of the infection and caries. If gum issues are there you need to get scaling and polishing done from a dentist. Also incorporate use of dental floss in your daily oral hygiene procedure. Visit a dentist at your earliest.

Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Bad breath can be reduced or prevented if you: practice good oral hygiene. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque. Don't forget to brush the tongue, too. Replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months or after an illness. Use floss or an interdental cleaner to remove food particles and plaque between teeth once a day. See your dentist regularly -- at least twice a year. He or she will conduct an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning and will be able to detect and treat periodontal disease, dry mouth, or other problems that may be the cause of bad mouth odor. Drink lots of water. This will keep your mouth moist. Chewing gum (preferably sugarless) stimulates the production of saliva, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
