What are the DO's and DON'Ts to be taken care of immediately before and after having meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast) Please guide me,

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Healthy eating habits go further than just food. What we do directly after we eat can have an adverse effect on our bodies. These habits may not seem harmful, but can cancel out all of the clean eating we’ve been doing. Here are some post-meal do’s and don’ts that will help you optimize your digestive system and allow you to look and feel better. DON’T Drink Tea Some people like a cup of tea right before or right after dinner with dessert. The high acidity of the tea leaves though affects your digestive system. Acid will harden any protein from your meal and make it very difficult to digest; it also decreases the amount of iron your body will absorb. If you’d like to have a post-meal cup of tea, wait at least an hour after dinner to allow for digestion. DO Drink Water Drinking water before a meal can help you feel fuller and therefore eat less. It will also help your digestive system by breaking down food and absorbing nutrients and softening your stool to prevent constipation. DON’T Go to Sleep When people are trying to lose weight, they’re advised not to eat too close to bedtime. When we sleep, our bodies don’t digest food properly. Sleeping on a full stomach can lead to a not-so-great snooze and leave you feeling full and groggy. DO Go For a Walk Health experts advise against a brisk walk or exercise right after a meal, since your blood will flow away from your stomach and hinder digestion. Taking a moderate walk after a meal though will burn up the sugar in your blood and prevent it from turning into fat. DON’T Eat Fruit with Your Meal Fruit is made up of simple sugars that are easily broken down by your stomach acid. Most fruits are also high in nutrients like vitamin C and potassium. Eating fruit, however, along with any other type of food, can hold up your intestines and cause the other contents in your stomach to spoil. Breakfast time is the best time to enjoy some fruit, but be sure to wait at least an hour before ingesting any other food. DO Improve Your Posture You’ve probably heard this a hundred times from your mother or other relatives. Bad posture can lead to not only back problems, but intestinal issues as well. When you slouch, your internal organs get squished and prevent you from digesting your food. Sit or stand up straight after your meal to improve the flow of digestion. DON’T Bathe Bathing is great in general. Bathing right after a meal though will direct blood flow away from your stomach the way exercise does, and slow your digestion system.

Respected Dr. I am too thin and I want to become little fat and fit please tell me what can I do for this please tell me quickly.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Gaining weight is as difficult as losing it, if you are naturally thin. Skinny people complain that they can't put on any weight. If you want to build up weight, don't just eat high-calorie junk foods and rely on unnecessary supplements. Choose foods that are energy-dense and nutrient-dense whenever possible. Following are some tips to follow to increase your weight. You will take some time to gain the weight you need, but be patient. 1. If you have a rapid metabolism, then you must increase your daily intake of healthy foods (increase your intake of carbohydrates) to compensate for the rate at which you burn energy. Eat six smaller meals a day You should also eat more energy dense foods like healthy oils, dry fruits, seeds, nuts, pulses, etc. along with some starchy foods like potatoes, cereals, bread, pasta, rice, etc. 2. Consume more calories than you burn. Choose healthy calorie-dense food to add calories. Drink healthy beverages to add calories. Mangoes are rich in calories and carbohydrates, include them in your diet. 3. Eat healthy food frequently, 5-6 times a day - 3 larger meals and 3 smaller meals alternately. Separate them by at least 3 hours so you can digest each meal fully. Don't go without food for 5-6 hours after having a major meal. For example, if you wish to consume 3000 calories a day, you may eat 3 larger meals of about 650 calories and 3 smaller meals of about 450 calories. 4. Have a balanced diet. 5. Exercise regularly for putting on weight. Some thin people think that exercise is not good for them. This is not true, it keeps the metabolism high. Remember that eating alone is not sufficient. You don't want to gain fat but lean mass, so exercise is important. Resistance training exercises will help to increase your muscle mass, which in turn will increase metabolism. Learn to distinguish between weight gaining exercises and weight loss exercises. Note that if you do not get enough amino acids during exercise, the existing muscle may break down. Amino acids come from protein foods so you should eat such foods after exercise. Keep in mind that excessive exercise without putting back the energy you have used will not help you to put on weight.

General Physician, Hyderabad
The liquor that comes out contains sperm, it cannot be seen with eyes. To know your sperm count, you need to get semen analysis. Do not feel bad about he things that are not there. Sperm count can be increased by various way if your low count is confirmed by tests. Take care.

I'm 23 years old. I have a high metabolic rate. I have been trying to gain weight and muscle but No matter how much I eat, it doesn't show any results. How do I counter my metabolism?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
For the ‘average’ person, you need around 3500 calories to gain a pound. That’s 3500 calories over and above your maintenance weight! Likewise, for every 3500 calories of deficit your body has, you will potentially lose a pound of fat reserves.

Hello Doctor, My father is having blood pressure. Near about almost eight months ago, he faced brain swelling. Doctor said it was because of hypertension. Keep him busy. Let him join some old peoples club or some such place. Let him play with grand children if any. He may do some daily chore like bringing vegetables or milk. Hello My husband has been diagnosed with brain tuberculosis. Docs r saying there is fluid accumulation in the brain. He is on tb medicines since the last 20 days. Though is headache and drowsy ness has gradually decreased. But the weakness refuses to go. Doctors has asked me to give him high protein diet. But the protein in his brain is 152. Is it safe to give him high protein diet. Since his protein level in brain is so high.

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
It take some time for anti tb drugs to show some good effects, so continue medicines. Yes high protein diet is recommended. The high protein in the brain fluid (csf) which you are taking about is due to the infection and not that his body has high proteins. It is necessary to have proteins in body so that the immunity levels to fight tb are optimized. Another thing to note is that brain tb patients need anti tb medicines form longer durations than lungs tb patients i. E. At least for an year.

I take part in cycling events of 80-90 km track and complete them. But now days I get tired in 40-45 km. What to do?

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. It's very possible you are not eating the right foods at the right time when needed by the body. Before cycling take a fruit, fruit yoghurt, dates or smoothie depending on intensity of the cycling. Post cycling either have your breakfast or lunch within an hour. Keep hydrated while cycling. Diluted fruit juice or lime juice or energy drinks are useful.

My mom is 45 year old and she has a regular knee pain. She walks alot I think that may be a reason behind this.

Fellow of Endoscopic spine surgery (FENDS) , Fellow of Interventional spine & pain (FISP) , MD-Anaesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Fellow of Pain Management (FPM) , DA( Gold medal-Anaesthesiology & Pain Medicine) , MBBS
Pain Management Specialist, Delhi
Hi, knee pain might be due to degenerative process common at her age as osteolytic (breaking of bone material) activity along with harmonal changes (reduction in estrogen) occurs. Try giving her adequate calcium along with vitamin d supplementation & also she should do knee & supporting muscles strengthning exercises. If this improves her condition then continue doing same for entire life. If there is inadequate relief then visit a pain soecialist or orthopedician who can diagnose the grade of knee osteoarthritis or any other issue (such as cartilage or ligament problem) & treat further. Important thing to understand here is no one can stop the degenerative process of body, you can delay the degeration by conservative management or sometime even interventions for pain relief such as viscosupplementation, cortisone injection, prp therapy or genicular nerve block, but if degeneration wins over conservative or preventive measures than one has to go for knee replacement. Hope it helps.

I am having very severe knee pain problems on my right knee from the past many months, due to which I cannot walk much & also unable to stand for a longer period/duration due to such knee pain. The X-ray reports of my both the knee (as on dated 26.10.2016) says the under-mentioned three things: 1. Digitogram reveals mild OA changes noted involving both knee joints. 2. The patella-femoral compartments show early affection. 3. Joint spaces of the knees are normal. I had tried lots & lots of medicines from the past two years in order to reduce my severe knee (joint) pain problems, but all the medicines had totally/completely failed & none of them had really worked or had helped me or either reduced my severe knee pain problems. I had also gone to many best orthopaedics doctors (nearly six to seven) of Kolkata during these past two years but the medicines prescribed by all of them (i.e these orthopaedics doctors) had not really helped me, even in the least manner or to the least level. I have heard from lots of people that, the medicine named" Macvestin"is very good & extremely helpful in reducing severe & continuous knee (especially joint) knee pain problems. Should I start taking this" Macvestin"tablet/medicine. If yes, then which" Macvestin"tablet should I start with i.e either 500 mg or 1000 mg. Please advice. How many tablets should I consume within 24 hours i.e one tablet or two tablet - i.e within a day. Is this tablet is to be taken/consumed - after eating breakfast, lunch or dinner. Please advice/suggest my all these above-mentioned queries in detail - in my email id i.e"krishnakumar."My mobile no. Is" 9674458740"& your goodself can make a call to my mobile no.
