As we age, we start losing bone mass and density. Cartilage starts wearing away and many people start to develop degenerative joint disease.

How do we slow the degenerative process?

The right diet, exercise and a healthy life style can help us slow down the degenerative process

A diet rich in collagen:  Green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, soy milk etc contain collagen which is the main protein found in connective tissue that helps to keep the ligaments and tendons flexible.

Omega 3 fatty acids: A diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids is found to reduce the progression of Osteo- arthritis. Soybean, flaxseeds, sardines, walnuts etc are good sources of omega 3 fatty acid

Calcium and vitamin D are quintessential for maintaining bone health.

Yogurt, cheese, fortified cereals, orange juice etc contain calcium and Vitamin D. Exposure to sunlight also helps our body to synthesize Vitamin D.

Exercise can help to preserve and maintain joint mobility. Being overweight can put extra pressure on the joint and worsen the symptoms of arthritis. Yoga, walking, swimming, etc are great for joint flexibility and improving muscle strength.

Hello, I have sciatica and thigh cramps at night. I am having Ayurveda Himalaya shallaki and for Paresthesia having kapikachhu. As recommended by a physician here. But even after one year, I am not exactly out of it .I came across bakson B 69. My question is - Can I have it? I don't have diabetes. Only blood pressure. I am 60 years old. I had homeopathy earlier but it was not so effective. I have hypothyroid. Taking allopathy medication thyroid 50 mg.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Please tell me if you are on metformin along with other medications for diabetes? If yes, then there may be a need for B12 (methylcobalamine) supplement along with other drugs which help muscle activity like calcium. It is also necessary to maintain TSH around 3 to 4 mU/L, to be free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Plus blood glucose fasting should be < 100 mg, PP 160 to 170 mg & HbA1c% <6.8. Thanks.

5 Homoeopathic Remedies For Gouty Arthritis!

Gout is a form of arthritis and occurs because of excessive uric acid in the body. There are proteins in the diet known as purines, and when they are metabolised, uric acid is released. When there is an excessive amount of purines in the diet, the body is unable to metabolise all of the produced uric acid. This excessive production or repaired metabolism can lead to gout. These get deposited in the joints as crystals in various joints, especially of the big toe.

Symptoms:

  1. The joints, most frequently the big toe, are painful, swollen, red, and very warm to the touch
  2. The big toe is known as podagra
  3. The pain is a strong, shooting pain, very severe in nature
  4. The patient’s description is very diagnostic of gout
  5. Other joints could be affected including ankles, knees, and hands

Treatment:
Gout, as seen from above, is not just excessive uric acid in the body. There could be various reasons leading to this problem. Therefore, homoeopathy believes that the underlying problem needs to be evaluated and treated for the symptoms to disappear. The following are some commonly used remedies:

Colchium:

  • Useful in both acute and chronic cases of gout
  • Intense pain in the big toe, where the patient would not allow touching it
  • The toe is stiff, swollen, red, and hot
  • The pain is worse at night and during warm weathers
  • The patient also may feel feverish and cold internally

Benzoic acid:

  • These patients usually have offensive urine, which is evident from a distance
  • The urine may be brown in colour.
  • The pain in the great toe is tearing, and the knees may also be affected, which also are painful and swollen.
  • Any movement causes a cracking sound which increases with movement.
  • The patient likes to keep the affected area covered, and opening it to air may worsen the symptoms.

Sabina:

  • Useful in females, who may also have other feminine disorders (for instance, uterine issues) in addition to gout
  • The toes and heels will have shooting pain which is worse in warm surroundings
  • The affected joints also appear red and shining.

Berberis vulgaris:
These people present with warm, bright yellow or blood red urine with sediments that could be red/reddish yellow.

Ledum pal:

  • The pain travels from down below, for instance, starts with the feet and moves up to the knees and the limbs
  • Small joints like the ball of the great toe and ankles are more affected by lack of warmth and inability to tolerate warmth
  • Applying a cold towel or cloth may help relieve the pain.

Hi Sir, I am 50 years old. My knee hurts when I climb up and down the stairs. This has continued for the last 12 years. I do take regular calcium tablets and walk for an average of 3.5 km to 4 km in the morning. My height is 5 ft 7 inches and am 70 kg in weight. I am slim overall but have heavier hips compared to my body. Anything to do can you suggest to improve. No sugar, BP or thyroid.

It is mechanical problem involving your knee joints and medicines hardly has any role. Main thing is how to reduce further damage to knee joints. Reduce your weight by 4-5 kg. Avoid postures which cause pain specially squatting, sitting cross legged, reduce use of stairs as far as you can.

Usually we recommend patient to undergo ACL reconstruction in symptomatic patient due to ACL injury to prevent early arthritis changes. That's you already undergone. You continue physiotherapy as advised by operative surgeon. Needs some more information regarding date of injury and operation and current knee status like Range of motion of knee joint.

I think surgery is last resort after local steroid injection. If you are reluctant to surgery you can have one more local steroid injection if no relief after that then you can think about surgical management. Usually surgery results are good with little percent chances complications.

Sitting in a chair for long hours especially in front of a system with out maintaining proper posture will induce excess strain on the neck as well as on the back. Sitting straight with proper back support is very important. Take frequent breaks in between.

Rheumatic arthritisIt is called as Rheumatic arthritis. If your pain is more in the distal joints, ie. In the upper limbs if the pain is present in the fingers/wrist and in the lower limbs it the pain is present in the toes/ ankle, then we shall definitely say it is Rheumatic arthritis. Wear elbow brace and wrist brace which will make her to feel warm and that will make the joints become firm. Hot water fermentation will help Knee cap will also help to prevent the damaged cartilages. If your pain is more in the distal joints, ie. In the upper limbs if the pain is present in the fingers/wrist and in the lower limbs it the pain is present in the toes/ ankle, then we shall definitely say it is Rheumatic arthritis. Which joints you have pain? If your proximal joints (ie. Shoulder, hip & knee has pain) then you can pour hot (warm) water in that area to reduce the inflammation. If you have pain in the distal joints ie. Wrist, fingers, ankle, toes then you can wear either elbow brace or wrist brace which will help you to feel warm and very protective. And also immerse the distal joints in the hot water tub which will help you to reduce the pain. Consult the near by physiotherapy clinic and also consult a general physician to check with your ESR levels to check whether you have inflammation The sound what you hear is called as Crepitus /ˈkrɛpɪtəs/ (also termed crepitation) is a medical term to describe the grating, crackling or popping sounds and sensations experienced under the skin and joints or a crackling sensation due to the presence of air in the subcutaneous tissue. Popping Knees and Crackling Knuckles. Occasionally hearing pops, snaps, and crackles when you bend your knees doesn’t necessarily mean you have arthritis. The kneecap (patella) is the small, convex bone that sits at the front of the knee, shielding the joint.
