The burden of exams is taking a tremendous toll on both the psyche and physiology of students today. Exam stress is making then ill, anxious and depressed. To cap it all, not being able to shake off the stress, makes them freeze up during the exams. If you are a student and find yourself in the grips of exam phobia, here are a few things you can do to alleviate it -

• Work out on a regular basis: When you exercise, your body produces oxytocins which are the feel-good hormone. It is also a stress buster. Moreover, exercise boosts your metabolism. Stress can lead to indigestion, nausea, diarrhoea or vomiting. Working out helps prevent that.

• Get a good night’s sleep: Sleep helps your brain flush out waste materials produced by the cells of the brain. If the wastes accumulate, it leads to forgetfulness and difficulties in recalling. Psychologists say that staying up nights to cram right before your exam will never serve any purpose because its only during sleep that your brain is able to store the information it has gathered during the day.

• Eat healthily: Avoid spicy rich food because they are difficult to digest. Your platter should contain leafy vegetables, omega 3 fatty acids, whole grains and nuts. Together they will improve your memory and also kill stress. Remember to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

• Avoid caffeine: You should also avoid caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee. People tend to drink too much of both rights before exams to keep themselves alert. But, excess caffeine can hike your stress levels and deprive you of your much-needed sleep. Instead, opt for soothing herbal teas.

• Practise breathing techniques. Not only do they make you relax, but they also improve focus and concentration.
Strategize

• Spread out your studies over the course of the year so that you do not have to cram right before the exams. Make an exam planner and stick to it.

• Intersperse your study hours with small breaks. These breaks serve as a respite. Eat a healthy snack, go for a walk, read a book, play with a pet, or talk to your loved ones-all of which can relieve stress.

• Study with a friend.

• Do not allow yourself to be distracted. Your mobile phone will only eat into your study time

• Block unhelpful and self-doubting thoughts. Convince yourself that you are going to ace the exam. Confidence is the best stress buster.

• Arrive at the venue early. There is nothing more anxiety-inducing as being caught up in traffic and worrying that you won’t make it in time.
A little bit of stress is actually good for you, it keeps your goal in focus. But, giving it free rein will impede you and you can curb it with the above-mentioned tips.

What is IVF?

Menstrual disorders are caused by a variety of factors and affect every woman in a different manner. In most cases, it manifests itself in the form of fluctuations in menstrual flow and irregularity in the monthly cycle. Certain disorders are not too severe and can be easily alleviated. Others are more complicated and require the immediate attention of a gynecologist.

As mentioned, there are different specific causes of different kinds of disorders resulting from a range of factors such as hormone levels, functioning of the central nervous system, health of the uterus, etc.

Some of the most common causes of menstrual disorders are as follows:

- Hormonal imbalance

Fluctuating hormone levels in the body have a direct impact on the menstrual cycle. These fluctuations can be caused by dysfunction in the pituitary gland, thyroid gland or adrenal gland. It can also be a result of malfunction in either or both ovaries and the secretion of hormones originating there.

- Anatomic problems

- Medications and supplements

Incorrect posture or a sedentary lifestyle will often land you in pain in your lower back region. To control this pain, here are a few exercises which you might try out for a healthier back:

1. Bottom to heels stretch: This helps to stretch and mobilize the spine. Keep your knees and hands in line with your hips and shoulders. Do not over arch your back as that will just bring you a negative impact. Move your bottom backwards. Hold the stretch while you breathe in and out once. Repeat this exercise 8 to 10 times.

2. Knee Rolls: For this exercise you have to lie down on your back. Support your head with a cushion or a book. Bend your knees and keep them together. Relax your upper body. Then roll your knees, followed by your pelvis, from one side to another. Hold your stretch while you inhale and exhale once.

3. Back extensions: For this exercise you need to lie on your stomach. You will have to prop yourself on your elbows. Arch your back while you put your hands on the ground and hold it for 5 to 10 seconds.

4. Deep abdominal strengthening: You have to lie on your back. Support your head with a cushion or a book. Keep your knees bent and your feet straight, relax your upper body and breathe in and out while stretching your stomach muscles. Hold it for 5 to 10 breaths.

5. Decompression Breathing: Stand with your heels slight apart from each other. Reach out overhead, lift your ribcage away from your hips while inhaling, and tighten your core while exhaling.

For a healthy and strong lower back you may require some other exercises, but to control the pain in your lower back you should absolutely make a point to try these out.

What is PCOD?

PCOD or Polycystic Ovarian Disease is a disorder that causes innumerable hormonal disorders. It causes disruption in the normal menstrual cycle, often delaying it. Having been diagnosed with PCOD makes a woman prone to diabetes, cholesterol and cancer. A large number of cysts develop on the ovaries which enlarge when afflicted by this condition. PCOD can increase the chances of severe muscle spasms during one’s periods.

Causes Of PCOD-

  1. The cysts are mostly caused due to hormonal changes and fluctuations.

  2. It could be genetic.

  3. PCOD can also be a result of an unhealthy lifestyle that includes little rest, inadequate sleep and unwholesome diet lacking in the right nutrients.

  6. Including lean proteins in the diet.

Glycemic Index in Diabetes - What Influences It?

The glycemic index is a measure of food containing carbohydrates and how it can raise the level of glucose in the blood. This is essentially a process where every food is ranked based on a reference food such as white bread. A food with a high GI value increases the level of glucose in the blood compared to a food with a GI that is medium or low. Some of the common examples of food with a low GI include legumes and dried beans. Fats and meats are not included in the index due to the non-availability of carbohydrate in them.

Some common foods with a GI of 55 or less include bread made up of pumpernickel and whole wheat, muesli, oatmeal, bulgur, barley, pasta, yam, lentils, sweet potato, converted rice, corn, non-starchy fruits, and vegetables. A food set with medium GI in the range of 56 to 69 includes quick oats, basmati rice, pita bread and couscous. Some example of foods with high GI value in the range of 70 includes pineapple, russet potato, white bread, macaroni, puffed rice, corn flakes, rice cakes and melons.

What influences GI?

Since GI has nothing to do with fibre and fat, some general findings of the GI count are as follows:

  1. When a food is processed or cooked, the GI tends to increase

  2. More the storage time of the food, the higher is the GI. It is applicable for ready to cook food and frozen food as well.

  3. The higher is the GI count, more the ripeness of a fruit or vegetable.

  4. Converted food items tend to have a lower GI as compared to the original version of the food

What are the other considerations?

While the GI value gives first-hand knowledge about the type of carbohydrate a person is consuming, it is hard for any help when it comes to the amount of carbohydrate intake. Portion size, therefore, still plays an important role for patients suffering from diabetes. The GI count of a food item greatly varies when combined with food which has higher GI or lower GI for that matter. Nutritious food that is extremely beneficial for the body, tends to have a higher GI count. For instance, the GI count of oatmeal is greater than that of chocolate.

Which one is more effective?

While there is no hard and fast rule for maintaining the carbohydrate count, an approach that is equally balanced between a GI count and carbohydrate count works best for a patient. Both the type of carbohydrate as well as the count of carbohydrate plays a crucial role in keeping the blood sugar level under control.

When it comes to the effects of alcohol, the liver is the most talked about organ. However, this is not the only part of the body affected by alcohol. Alcohol can also affect your cardiovascular health. This effect is determined largely by the quantity of alcohol being consumed. In restricted amounts, alcohol can, in fact, be beneficial but in large amounts, it can be the cause of a number of heart health issues. Let’s take a look at both sides of the coin.

The Good
For women over the age of 45 years, drinking a small amount of certain types of alcohol such as red wine can be good for the heart. It protects the heart against damage to the arteries by increasing the good cholesterol levels. This prevents the narrowing of arteries by reducing the amount of fat deposited on the arterial walls. Good cholesterol also helps lower the level of bad cholesterol and fights against its ill effects.
Alcohol also reduces the ability of platelets to stick together by increasing the amount of fibrinogen produced by the liver. Thus, it prevents the formation of blood clots an in turn heart attacks caused by them.

The Not so Good
The ill effects of alcohol consumption overshadow its benefits. Drinking heavily over an extended period of time can increase your risk of heart disease. It increases blood pressure that can further trigger a stroke or heart attack. Alcoholism can also lead to weight gain that again causes an increase in blood pressure.

Excessive alcohol consumption also weakens the heart muscles. This condition is known as cardiomyopathy. As the heart muscles grow weaker, they cannot pump blood efficiently and the heart may fail and cause premature death.

Binge drinking can cause a condition known as Holiday Heart Syndrome. It is characterized by severe pain in the center of the chest, increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and breathlessness. It may make the person feel as though they were experiencing a heart attack. The term was coined as this condition was seen more commonly during the holiday season when people tend to drink more heavily.

Thus, if you want to enjoy a long, healthy life, avoid alcohol or drink in moderation. For women, this means one drink a day while for men; consumption should be limited to two drinks a day. If you have an existing heart condition or a history of strokes, alcohol should be avoided completely.
