Respected doctor. please tell me can posture during stationary exercise bike workout harm the back? I am aksing becau...
It is important to know how to use an exercise bike the right way. If your posture is poor, you'll reduce your overall results and may even cause injury to your neck, back, knee and hips. Making right adjustments of your equipment will allow you to pedal fast, hard and without worrying about posture or too much pressure on joints. 1) Seat - you'll want a height in which your legs are slightly bent when pedaling. You never want your legs to be fully bent or fully straight. 2) Handlebars - if your static cycle offers handlebar adjustments then choose a position that enables your arms to be fully extended. 3) Feet - do not pedal with your toes. Use your complete foot. 4) Back Posture - your back should be straight. Donot bend forward to grab handlebars or pedal. If you do so, you are putting excess pressure on your back and neck. 5) Footwear - always wear good sport shoes/ sneakers when pedaling. Never opt for barefoot cycling. Follow the above rules while cycling and I ensure You will never bother your joints.

In any sort of unbearable pain, exercisetherapy is not recommended. It will worsen up the condition. First of all take your reports to a good Radiologist. Diagnosing the condition is the utmost important step only then a proper treatment will take place. If the tests show nothing and you are in pain, there is something wrong. A good doctor doesnot just rely on the reportsbut view images himself and evaluates what he sees based on his examination and the patient's symptoms and signs.

1) avoid those activities which increases your pain. Eg: forward bending etc 2) one should find out the cause of your pain eg: if the pain has started suddenly, it could be a muscle pull while playing or bending or long stretch driving. Once the cause is known, treatment can be done accordingly. Mean while, focus on the following points: 1) place a cushion and support your back while driving/sitting. 2) check on your footwears. Bad footwear leads to back pain 3) place a pillow under your knees while sleeping straight and between your both knees while sleeping side lying (this technique helps to relax your muscles) 4) use a hot water bag/ heat belt to the painful area, heat will improve the blood flow to the muscles. 5) perform certain isometrics as well as strengthening and stretching exercises. You can consult me through lybrate for exercises in detail. Regards!

* generalized aches and pains are one of the most common symptoms of influenza. * additional common causes for aches and pains include exercise, stress, depression, and drug side effects, electrolyte imbalances like too little potassium or calcium. * treatment depends on the underlying cause. * be sure to get plenty of sleep and try to reduce stress. * yoga and meditation are excellent ways to help you sleep and relax. * if this doesn't work, kindly go for your body check up. * body ache should not be taken lightly if it exceeds 3 days regards!

Exercises for joint pain: 1> Aqua-Aerobics - For some, running on the treadmill or elliptical can be very painful and do more damage to the bones than good. For those individuals, aqua-aerobics is a great option. Being in the water takes the weight and pressure off of your joints, while still providing a rigorous exercise. 2> Yoga - Yoga does wonders for strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility. 3> Stretching - There are so many different stretches you can perform to reduce joint pain. Depending on what muscles are causing you pain, these stretches can vary. Ask your PHYSIOTHERAPIST what is best for you. 4> Cycling - Try using the stationary bicycles. * Remember, everyone’s pain is unique, and these exercises may not work for everyone. Talk to your Physiotherapist about developing an exercise plan that suits your needs. NOTE: Joint pain occurs because of deficiency or excess of certain minerals. Kindly go for blood tests for precise diagnosis.

* too much of stooping posture esp while texting on phone causes neck pain hence avoid that. * start isometric exercises for your neck and strengthening exercises for your legs - consult physiotherapist for this. * electrotherapy required - consult physiotherapist for this. * heat pad/ cold pack application helps a lot to redue spasm. * low impact aerobic exercise like swimming helps a lot to strengthen the weak muscles * physical stretching exercises such as yoga helps in relaxation too. * practice healthy sleep habits. * avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine - it slows down the healing.

Following could be the causes: * tingling (vibration) can be caused by a disorder of the neck spine, disorders of the elbow, wrist, hand or the fingers itself. The other causes may include: *overuse of the wrist * constant or repeating leaning on the wrist: (cyclists, crutches users, weight lifters.) * hypoglycemia can cause shaking/shivering hands - check on your sugar levels * hypothyroidism could cause vibration in hands/fingers * too much caffeine can make your hands shake - caffeine is present in coffee, tea and soft drinks. * do not skip meals - not having your meal on time or starving, fasting leads to shivering. Note: do not delay and consult your doctor to diagnose the problem. Your doctor will discuss your medical history and general health. He may also ask about your work, your activities, and what medications you are taking. Regards!

Dear lybrate user, 1) where exactly is the pain located? upper back / lower back 2) is it a radiating pain (the pain goes till the thigh or leg) or non-radiating (located only to one point) pain? 3) if radiating - consult a physiotherapist for diagnosis followed by treatment 4) if non radiating - go for hot fermentation twice a day (will help the muscles relax which were going for wear and tear because of over use). Perform back strengthening exercises to avoid relapse or further damage to the muscles. Regards!

Dear lybrate user, causes of calf pain: * calf muscle pain can be be due to injury, underlying medical condition or a problem in the nerves or arteries in the lower leg. * calf muscle weakness and tightness is also a very common cause of calf muscle pain. The weak muscles will often tire quickly if you are on your feet for prolonged periods of time and if the calf is tight, it is prone to damage from overstretching. Treatment: * cold therapy - apply ice pack for 10-15 minutes atleast thrice a day. * heel pad - wearing a heel pad raises the heel and shorten the calf muscle hence taking some of the strain off the muscle. * electrotherapy - electrotherapy such as ultrasound may be applied. This transmits high frequency sound waves into the tissues, which in the early stages can help with pain relief. (consult a physiotherapist in person) * massage therapy -the benefits of massage are stimulating blood flow, micro-stretching the muscle and releasing areas of spasm in the muscle. Note: * episodes of calf muscle pain should always be assessed by your doctor to ensure it is nothing serious such as a dvt which requires immediate attention. * pay particular attention to the signs for a dvt: redness, swelling, warmth and pain around the calf. * also, calf pain that is worse at night or makes it difficult to walk warrants immediate medical attention. Regards!

> Change your grip position to avoid an acute bend at the wrist. > Wrist wraps can help in the short term, but it's better to strengthen your wrists. The way to improve your wrists isn’t by doing more heavy lifts. Instead, work the small muscles around the wrist that provide support. > Do wrist stretches for improving flexibility: Go for Prayer stretches, Wrist flexor stretch and Wrist extensor stretch. Drop a feedback if you find it useful.

You can safely lose weight at home with a healthy diet and lots of exercise. * Don't skip meals esp breakfast- Skipping breakfast seems like a simple way to cut calories, but it can make you hungry the rest of the day. * Drink plenty of water - Water is essential for burning calories. If you let yourself get dehydrated, your metabolism drags, and that means slower weight loss. * Add Protein to your diet - Your body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing the protein you eat, so a high-protein diet can boost metabolism by up to 80-100 calories per day. * Avoid Liquid calories - Liquid calories come from beverages like sugary soft drinks, fruit juices, chocolate milk and energy drinks. * Limit your intake of refined carbs - The main dietary sources of refined carbs are white flour, white bread, white rice, sodas, pastries, snacks, sweets, pasta, breakfast cereals and added sugar. * Avoid excess salt and sugar. * Add Eggs to Your Diet - Eggs are the ultimate weight loss food. They are low in calories, high in protein and loaded with all sorts of nutrients. * Eat More Slowly - Chewing more slowly may help you eat fewer calories and increase the production of hormones that are linked to weight loss. * Take Probiotics - Of all the probiotic bacteria, Lactobacillus gasseri shows the most promising effects on weight loss. * Start Physical activities like swimming, jogging, cardio atleast 4 days a week. * Focus on Changing Your Lifestyle - Instead of focusing only on losing weight, make it a primary goal to nourish your body with healthy food and nutrients. Eat to become a healthier, happier, fitter person — not just to lose weight. Regards!

* sitting puts nearly twice the stress on the spine. Slouching while you sit increases the pressure even more. * slouching fatigues and overstretches the ligaments, causing back pain. * there's no vascular or nerve supply to the discs; they get their nutrition through movement. Reasons for your back pain: 1> tight leg muscles 2> weak back musculature 3> incorrect sitting posture treatment: 1> stretching - stretching of thigh muscles will help a lot. Consult a physiotherapist to teach you 2> strengthening - start exercises like swimming which helps to make your back muscles strong 3> change your position - try and put your wallet/ phone in the front pocket. Sitting upright as well as slouching is the worst posture while sitting. Support your back with a pillow/cushion while sitting.

You neck pain causes could likely be: 1> Poor Posture - during sleep /during work 2> Muscle strain. Treatment: * Give your muscles a break - When you lie down, Make sure your head in a neutral position and that you’ve got a comfortable pillow. More rest is often the best remedy even if you just rolled out of bed. * Avoid activities such as lifting and sports that make pain worse. * Do stretching and strengthening exercises to keep your neck flexible and strong and prevent stiffness. * Avoid or change any activities that may be causing your neck pain, such as sitting for a long time at the computer or doing too much overhead work at a time. * Gently massage or rub the area to relieve pain and encourage blood flow. NOTE: In case you smoke then - Smoking slows healing because it decreases blood supply and delays tissue repair.
