My husband says that if he can sing songs and recite dialongs /songs there should not be a problem with the hearing. ...
Dear Lybrate User, There are many individuals who can not hear that well, but still can sing song and recite dialogues or songs. There is no one to one correlation. Yes, hearing is required learn singing and exactly copying the dialogue with tone. However, there are other symptoms of not hearing. If you talking about kids who may have hearing problem, then you should see if they respond to name calls, understanding what you say without looking at your face, or asking for repetition. If you think these symptoms are present, then you should get the hearing checked.

Dear Mr. lybrate-user, there are various reasons why one would get a high frequency hearing loss. Some of the reasons are undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, listening to loud music on ear phone for long hours, working in a high noisy area, familial hearing loss or any other which may cause damage to neural connection of the hearing. If there is no obvious reasons, then you need to get a differential diagnosis by doing some more tests to check nerves. This suggestion is because hearing will not go down without a reason. Meat the audiologist who tested your hearing. Discuss with them about your concerns about cause.

Dear lybrate-user, Please get a hearing evaluation done by an audiologist, and then get guidance on what are the possible rehabilitation options for your ailment. An audiologist also takes the opinion of ENT if the condition is medically treatable. If medicines or surgery does not help then you may need to consider getting hearing aids which will help you hear. Now a days there are smart hearing devices and its like any other gadget everybody wants to have.

Hi Excessive saliva because of Parkinson's for 2 yrs. She uses tissue paper every minute. How to fix this problem.
Dear lybrate-user, Excessive saliva is a common problem in parkinsons disease. There are medications available for the same. However, medications will reduce the saliva in the mouth making it dry and difficult to chew and swallow food which needs moist environment in the mouth. I suggest you to have a check on her posture, swallowing frequency. Ask her to swallow saliva as much as possible. Use slight inclined position while she is seated.

Hi lybrate-user, Long term ear discharge or what we call infection of the ear can cause permanent damage to ear and hearing. If hearing does not improve with surgery then you need to get hearing aids for your hearing. Please consult an audiologist for the same and start with getting a complete hearing evaluation.

I have a 6 years old son. When he talks he couldn't say sound of r instead of r he says L and his voice is also not fully clear. I have visited a speech therapist he said his tongue is weak and its a case of articulation .pls suggest.

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Hi lybrate-user, it is an articulation problem as suggested by your speech therapist, and it needs to be corrected. Most treatment is focused on awareness and learning correct way to produce the sound r at different position of the word. It is not an overnight job. It takes time and dedication. It can be made creative in order to get the child's attention to do what and how you want. You may want to take regular classes with speech therapy. Please do not wait for time to heal. It usually does not. All the best.

There is a inferiority complex! That when I know that somebody has more knowledge than me or is much smarter than me so while talking to that person I stammer a lot. And people make fun of me. And 1 or 2 ppl with whom I am really close and open, then I don't stammer and speak properly. Please help.

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, I suppose your low confidence or inferiority complex due to your fear of not being able to make an impression by talking in a normal way. However, it may look reverse. You should know what was the oath for this development. If it was there since your childhood days it's mostly to do with your practice and other non progressive conditions. Stammering is very stressful and the only method to get it corrected is to practice strategies to speaking fluently. Your speech pathologist will be able to help you in this regard.

Hello, there is no medicines and surgeries for stammering. It requires your dedicated and constant monitering and excerises of co-ordinating breathing voices and articulation. It takes your patience and persistance to stop stammering. 1) donot worry about why it came as science has been trying to prove the causes since they came to know about the stammering. 2) if your speaking very fast slowing your speech is very important and first in stammering. 3) there is a speech jammer apps available on android market freely downloadable which will help you spesk slowly and fluently. 4) practice reading slowly. 5) most importantly you need to consult an speech language pathologist at the earliest. Thank you.

I have paralysis, and what can I do now I have many troubles and can't do anything.

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, paralysis causes difficulty in moving either leg or hand of one side of the body. In such case you need to attend physical therapy to improve your mobility and strength and occupational therapy to improve your hand functions. In case of any speech language and swallowing problems, you need to consult a speech language pathologist. You need to keep in mind that more you use the muscles better they become. Try to be active as much as possible and try not to be dependent on your family members for daily activities.

Hi sir/madam. I am 18 years old boy. I am having puberphonia. My voice us not yet deepen, still I don't get a deeper manly, low pitch, masculine voice. Still my voice is at high pitch only. All my friend and boys who r younger to me got deeper low pitch voice. But I am still not. I had already consulted three ENT specialist in my area and they also told PUBERPHONIA and they prescribed me to take SPEECH THERAPY. With their consultation I went to speech therapist for two weeks of speech therapy. But I felt there is no changes in my voice. After speech therapy also my voice is like as before. Kindly prescribe me a speech therapist specialist. Pls sir because I faced lot of problem with this voice. Pls help me sir.

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, yes for puberphonia you need to consult a speech pathologist. It is not prescribed by any one. Correcting puberphonia needs consistent practice of some techniques and frequent monitoring by speech therapist. St will help you attain a low pitch voice, maintain it, and also keep the health of your throat and vocal folds. I am not really sure what kind of exercises carried out. I would be able to help you in a better way if you could consult me privately where you can share the voice samples too. Thank you.

Since childhood I speak very fast and some times I feel difficult in speaking few words. How to reduce it.

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, speaking fast is a common phenomenon. However, if it makes your speech unclear, its always a problem. In order to be clear, you need to slow your speed of speech. Practice reading news paper with slow speed. Make it your habit. Explain your problem to your friends who understand you and practice slow speaking with them as much as possible till you get used to it. Always remember, your speech is not clear because you speak fast. Thank you.

Puberphonia is a condition where a male have a high pitch (female like) after puberty. This is common in adolescence. Sir my self manjunath when I'm speaking my words or not correctly pronounced please help me.

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Mr. Lybrate-user, I have a clarification to ask from you. When you say words are not correctly pronounced is it one of the following? 1. Getting stuck while saying a word and something like stammering while saying name, speaking to strangers etc. 2. Saying a different sound instead of correct sound like saying" tar" for" car" differentiation is important as the above two are different conditions but when many explain, it seems as same. Please clarify. Thank you.

He thinks his voice is like a female. Any one recognize him as female over the phone and he has mind set of being female personality's in his body. He is not depressed about this. And avoiding marriage as marriage has no sense to him.

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Hi lybrate-user, I am not sure if it will be convincing for you and I might be wrong here too. But this is what I think it is. It looks like there is need to be liberal about gender identity. Female like voice can be corrected with voice therapy. But a package of personalities like a female is difficult to deal with. Meet the family physician and he/she will be able to guide in a better way. Acceptance is required from the family. Be cautious about what you talk to him. Don't hurt his feeling. Physical damage will heal but mental damage, specifically something like this would harm everybody.

Help you Speech Therapist!!

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Its often heard in clinical practice of speech language pathologists and other medical professions about the negative opinions about a/many speech language pathologist (s).

Not many look at the reasons for these disconnections from a service provider and the customer. Most of the efforts to understand this quote two main reasons

Economical constraints and
Unavailability of speech language pathologist (slp).

However, there are more reasons both sides. But its up to you to decide to waste your time reasoning or utilize best the available services.

To the care takers:

He/she is your kid, but not the speech pathologist's - being a parent, your role is central in helping the slp to help you to help your kid.
You need to communicate whats your needs are to the slp. They will tell you if its possible or not. You can ask questions till your doubts are cleared.
Don't be vague in your expectations. It will only hurt you when slp's goals are no way matching your because your slp is working step by step while you are already thinking about the end bypassing the whole process. Ask what can be expected or what is practical.
Slp can not produce results over night, unless he/she is a god or magician.
Each speech pathologist targets the same skills in their own way. Don't impose things by comparing two slps. It can not be measured in mg. In ones comfort zone, efficiency is maximum.
Consistently attend the therapy and then there is chance of improving your understanding about the improvement or reasons if there is no improvements.
Knowledge is good. Share it but not compare.
And more

Note: more suggestions may be updated with feedback.

Sir I have problem of stammering please give me any suggestion. Or any medicine. Information.

Hi, I am sorry to say there are no proved medicines for stammering but practicing fluent talking methods like speaking slow and monitoring your stammering. You need to be patient and practice the guidelines given by your speech pathologist. You may do the following: 1. Speaking slow (not low volume but less speed) 2. Reading slow (not low volume but less speed) thanks.
