I am diabetic, having hypertension and heart disease, can I take thyronorm tablets.
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. To treat hypothyroidism only available drug is Levothyroxine tablets. Hence, if you have that condition, then it may be necessary to take Thyroxine tablets. But I can only give a proper yes or know based on actual TSH value, BP reading plus some details on the heart condition. Since nothing is mentioned, it is difficult to give any opinion. Thanks.

I have gone through uric acid test which has shown as 10.4 against 7. Something I have started febustat-40.In past also the same thing was happened and I took febustat 40 for 20 days and my uric acid came down up to 5.4.Is there permanent treatment for uric acid in Homeopathy .If yes how many days I have to take. My creatinine a level also shown as 1.19 against 1.17. Is it due to Uric acid or what?

Normal Uric acid levels are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL (female) and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL (male) Some diets that are rich in purine end up causing an increased production of uric acid. In other cases, it may be due to a completely sedentary lifestyle. Less intake of water also may be to blame in some cases as water plays an important role in washing out the excess of the uric acid. Regular usage of some medicines also cause the uric acid levels to rise. Another important factor is being overweight as obese people are much more likely to get gout as compared to those who have normal weight. It is a tragedy of the modern world that the superior advertising and marketing power of the allopathic system of medicine has eclipsed the good and genuine work of Homeopathy. This is largely because Homeopathic system of medicine cannot compete with the money power of Allopathy. Just because allopathy does not have any cure for gout, patients tend to think that there is no cure for gout at all. People are not aware of the great work that Homeopathy can do in the cure of gout. I cannot stress enough here that homeopathic medicines are pretty effective at curing the acute as well as the chronic gout A homoeopathic constitutional treatment will give you a permanent cure naturally You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. When one is on treatment with adequate dose of Levothyroxine, TSH is usually maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. At that level, most of the symptoms are in check. Usually after starting treatment initially TSH should be checked after 6 o 8 weeks to see if the desired level is reached. Then accordingly dosage of thyroxine should be adjusted in the range of 12.5 to 25 mcg per day. Drastic change in dose is not advisable. If TSH goes below 0.1 mU/L there may be symptoms of excess thyroxine. Now you may check TSH after 8 weeks of starting the new dosage. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The blood glucose levels (fasting) are very much normal. However, PP 141 mg and HbA1c% 6.2, show that you may be in a pre-diabetes state. It is a warning signal. What it means is if you take adequate care like avoiding too much of sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, bakery items, foods made of maida and aerated sweetened drinks, then there will be no reason to worry. Plus there has to be a proper balanced diet. Regular exercise for at least 1 hour a day and keeping normal weight are other aspects to be kept in mind. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The test is to measure level of insulin secretion and resistance to its action. Not really needed in routine treatment. Most important is your fasting, PP glucose levels & HbA1c% are more relevant for initiating the treatment. Plus diet control plus exercise which play equally importnat role in controlling blood glucose levels. Thanks.

Gestational Diabetes

MBBS, DGO, MRCOG
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is also known as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus(GDM). It is a prevalent disorder which affects pregnant women and the main cause of this condition is the imbalance in the functioning of the insulin, which mainly happens due to the presence of human placental lactogen. Expecting mothers show a rise in their blood sugar level, especially during the last trimester of their pregnancy. Women who do not have a medical history of diabetes can also be affected with this condition.

Prominent symptoms of gestational pregnancy include:

Gestational diabetes does not have any prominent symptoms; it can only be diagnosed through proper and professional screening of blood sugar level. You should immediately consult a doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  1. Increased level of blood sugar
  2. Trouble to concentrate
  3. Recurrent headaches
  4. Increased thirst
  5. Blurry vision
  6. Sudden weight loss
  7. Anxiety
  8. Dizziness
  9. Pangs of hunger
  10. Pale skin and dry skin
  11. Excessive sweating
  12. Persistent weakness

How can you manage gestational diabetes?
Modification of lifestyle pattern, healthy food habits and moderate physical exercise can help minimize the risk of gestational diabetes in expecting mothers.
In order to manage gestational diabetes, the following things should be followed:

  1. The treatment when accompanied with balanced diet and routine exercises, reduces the occurrence of health problems in both mother and child.
  2. A routine screening for type ii diabetes should be conducted throughout the pregnancy, to ensure early detection and treatment of the same.
  3. A diet rich in fiber and whole grains minimizes the risk of diabetes in pregnancy, fresh fruits and vegetables are also known to check the blood sugar level in expecting mother, minimizing the occurrence of the health problem in both mother and child.
  4. Giving up the use of cigarettes and other forms of tobacco may reduce the chances of gestational diabetes in female smokers.

How Does Gestational Diabetes affect Pregnancy?

Gestational diabetes is harmful to both the expecting mother and the child. It increases the risk of complications in pregnancy that can prove to be fatal. Potential risks of gestational diabetes in pregnancy include:

  1. Preterm birth
  2. Increased risk of needing a C-section
  3. Miscarriage
  4. Preeclampsia and high blood pressure

Diabetes - 3 Ways It Impacts Male Sexual Health

MD - Physician
Sexologist, Coimbatore
Diabetes - 3 Ways It Impacts Male Sexual Health

Diabetes is often considered as deadly as cancer. It is a disease that requires lifestyle changes and diet modifications. It is also a disease that affects almost all body systems. Whether you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, it will do you a world of good to understand the effects of diabetes. Neurovascular damage is one of the most common effects, this means that diabetes will affect the nerves and blood supply of the body.

While Type 1 diabetes makes its presence felt much earlier and is hereditary quite often, Type 2 appears later in life with age and cumulative stress. The effects of diabetes are related to the duration of the disease. Therefore, people with Type 1 diabetes are more likely to have the symptoms early on and need to learn to manage them. Type 2 makes its appearance later, but needs good monitoring for the effects to not surface or prolong the severity of symptoms.

As we all know, all body systems are affected by diabetes, sexual health is no exception. Diabetes decreases blood supply and impacts the nerves in the genitals, thus causing a series of issues right from reduced libido and erectile dysfunction in males to vaginal dryness and painful coitus (perunia) in females.

Listed below are issues diabetic men and women face in terms of sexual health:

In Men:

1. Diabetes reduces testosterone levels, which is directly reflected in reduced libido. Altered nerve function does not provide proper signals to the penis and there is also reduced blood flow to the organ. Both these can diminish the chances of a good erection. Studies have shown that among men who have had diabetes for 10 years, about 50% have experienced erectile dysfunction.

2. The affected nerve function also leads to difficulties in reaching a climax. Diabetes in men can additionally cause Peyronie's disease, which leads to a curved penis, and this leads to painful and difficult erections and coitus.

In Women:

1. It leads to reduced sexual desire due to testosterone levels. Vaginal dryness is very common in females with diabetes, and therefore, there is a definite decline in the urge.

2. The above-mentioned neurovascular damage also prevents women from reaching a good climax, as the nerve supply is affected.

3. Diabetes also increases the predisposition to urinary tract infections, which can lead to painful sexual experience due to additional vaginal dryness and itching.

Finally, as much as it may sound as a cause for concern, it is not. People with diabetes know that making small lifestyle changes can go a long way in terms of onset of symptoms, their severity, and the leading of a normal life. Modifications in diet and lifestyle to include healthy eating, reduced stress, and exercising are very useful. It is also very important to talk to your doctor about how your sexual health has changed with diabetes. It is a sensitive and private topic, but if you are concerned about it, then do not hesitate to seek help.

Please ensure that you take the thyroid treatment properly and go for regular health check ups along with the basic tests. It is also important for you to change your habits and bring in a disciplined and healthy lifestyle into your routine. Eat only healthy food (homemade food is more preferable along with fruits and vegetables everday ). Avoid tobacco and alcohol and any other stimulants. Later you can add Homeopathy if the hairfall and dandruff does not stop. You can contact me or chat online with me for further clarification.

Diabetes - 5 Tips To Control It!

Diabetes - 5 Tips To Control It!

Diabetes is a lifestyle disease that can easily be managed by controlling our diet. Along with being aware of your sugar intake, your diet should help you lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. However, this does not mean you have to resign yourself to a lifetime of tasteless food.

Here are a few diet tips that can help manage diabetes:

  1. Choose high fiber carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are an essential element of the daily diet but have a huge impact on blood sugar levels. Hence, it is important to pick the right carbohydrates. Your diet should have a limited amount of refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta, soda etc. and should be focused more on high fiber carbohydrates such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, rolled oats and bran flakes that are digested slowly. This prevents your body from producing excessive insulin.
  2. Be sweet smart: The key to indulge your sweet tooth and controlling diabetes is moderation. Abruptly, removing sugar from your diet can make you crave for it. Instead, gradually lower your sugar intake. If you can't miss out on the dessert at the end of a meal, reduce the amount of carbohydrates in your meal. Adding healthy fats like peanut butter, yogurt or nuts to your dessert can also slow down the digestive process and thus control blood sugar level.
  3. Keep a food diary: When you are diabetic, it is very important to eat at regular intervals. Eating frequent, small meals are often better than fewer large meals. Try and maintain a food diary to keep track of your calorie intake. This helps identify problem areas of where your body is getting excessive calories from. When you are aware of the calories associated with things you eat, it is easier to cut down on snacks and replace unhealthy snacks with healthier options.
  4. Choose fats wisely: It is impossible to completely cut out fats from your diet. While some fats such as liquid vegetable oils and commercial baked goods are unhealthy, others have important health benefits. Unsaturated fats are the healthiest and safest. Replacing your vegetable cooking oil for olive oil and biscuits with nuts are easy ways to make smart choices with your fat intake.
  5. Go green: Green leafy vegetables are low on carbohydrates and high on nutrients. Thus, make them an integral part of your meal. Vegetables like kale, spinach, lettuce, etc. can be eaten raw or cooked. Along with being nutritious, they also add texture and color to your meals, thus making them more visually appealing.

Prevent Diabetes with Lifestyle Changes!

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, FACE, FACP, FRCP (London)
Diabetologist, Lucknow
Prevent Diabetes with Lifestyle Changes!

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that results in high blood sugar levels in the body. It basically means that the body is either insensitive to insulin or the insulin production levels in the body go down. The various symptoms of diabetes are blurred vision, weight loss and hunger.

Some other symptoms of diabetes are

  1. Excessive urine output
  2. Wounds that take time to heal
  3. Yeast infections
  4. You may experience fatigue on a regular basis
  5. Frequent Mood Changes

Diabetes is also known as a Lifestyle disease. From the food you eat to the amount of activity, they are all connected to diabetes prevention. The various modifications that you may carry out to prevent diabetes are:

1. Exercise

You should exercise on a regular basis as it increases your overall wellbeing. It helps you to lose weight and allows you to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. It can also improve your body's sensitivity to insulin to prevent blood sugar problems. Exercise helps in increasing endorphin levels in the body which are responsible for keeping you happy & satiated, thereby avoiding depression and over-eating.

2. Eat more whole grains

Unlike simple carbohydrates, whole grains are complex carbohydrates that raise your blood sugar steadily instead of spiking it suddenly. Avoid refined grains as most of the important nutrients are stripped from refined grains. A Well-balanced diet with adequate amounts of PUFA/MUFA help in increasing the insulin sensitivity, reducing cholesterol and heart problems, etc.

3. Eat a lot of fiber

If you have type 2 diabetes, you should be, including high-fiber foods in your diet is a healthy way to control high blood sugar. Fiber does not raise blood glucose levels. Because it is not broken down by the body, the fiber in an apple or a slice of whole grain bread has no effect on blood glucose levels because it isn't digested. The grams of fiber can actually be subtracted from the total grams of carb you are eating if you are using carbohydrate counting for meal planning. Fiber helps you in feeling satiated, thus prevents you from overeating. It also improves your blood sugar levels and decreases your chances of getting affected by heart disease.

4. Lose weight

You should aim to maintain a healthy weight level as it also decreases the risk of diabetes. It also helps in improving your cardiovascular health. Follow a regimen, which is based on a balanced diet and moderate amount of exercise. Losing weight is the best way to keep diabetes away. Weight is something that we can keep under control. The waist size of men and women should not be more than 150 cm and 90 cm respectively. Always maintain your ideal body weight as per your BMI (Body Mass Index). Globally, obesity is one of the leading causes of diabetes.

5. Avoid sugary drinks

With ten teaspoons of sugar in every 12-ounce can or bottle, sweet drinks can send your blood sugar soaring and boost your risk for weight gain, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. One sugary drink a day adds 150 empty calories and 40 to 50 grams of blood-sugar-raising carbohydrates to your diet, and can lead to a weight gain of 15 pounds per year. Switching to healthier drinks can save hundreds of calories and a lot of carbohydrates.

6. Avoid Stress

When you are stressed, your blood sugar levels rise. Stress hormones like epinephrine and cortisol kick in since one of their major functions is to raise blood sugar to help boost energy when it's needed most. You can't fight danger when your blood sugar is low, so it rises to help meet the challenge. Both physical and emotional stress can prompt an increase in these hormones, resulting in an increase in blood sugars and diabetes. Ensuring a stress-free life is very important if you want to stay away from diabetes. Avoid stress by going out for garden-walks, indulging in social causes/activities, yoga, meditation, etc.
