Heart Valve Surgery - Mechanical Vs. Bioprosthetic - Which Is Better?

A valve is something that allows a liquid to flow in one direction. Our heart has valves, and they play a critical role in ensuring that the blood travels in the right direction.

There are four valves in our heart:

  1. Tricuspid
  2. Pulmonary
  3. Aorta
  4. Mitral valve

A person suffers from heart valve disorder when one or more of these four valves stops functioning accurately. Each valve comes with a flap that opens and closes to allow blood flow. Disruption in the blood flow, thereby leading to serious ailments, can occur even if a single flap stops functioning. To rectify this situation a valve replacement surgery is conducted by heart surgeons. There are majorly two types of surgeries available: Mechanical and Bioprosthetic.

Mechanical Heart Valve surgery involves the replacement of the defective valve with a substitute made of metallic alloys and plastics. On the other hand, Bioprosthetic surgery is conducted using the valve tissue of an animal which is anchored to a bioprosthesis.

Mechanical Heart Valve Surgery: Pros and Cons
The prosthetics that is used in a mechanical valve replacement surgery are much more durable than those (cow or pig tissues) which are used in a bioprosthetic surgery. It lasts up to 20 to 30 years. But the major disadvantage of this surgery is that over the time the artificial replacements can lead to blood coagulation. Therefore, if you have undergone mechanical heart valve replacement, you will need a prolonged prescription of anticoagulation medicines. Unfortunately, there is plenitude of side-effects of anticoagulants. Therefore, you would have to be under medical observation through and follow the dietary restrictions (as per the instructions of the doctor). However, if you already have bleeding disorders, or are pregnant, this surgery will not be recommended for you. But, if you are already on anticoagulation medicines a mechanical surgery is the most practical option for you.

Bioprosthetic Heart Valve Surgery: Pros and Cons
Bioprosthetic surgery uses animal tissues as substitutes of the human valve tissue. Therefore, bleeding disorders are very less likely to crop up. So you do not have to depend on anticoagulants to sustain. The downside of this surgery is that the replaced tissues do not last for more than 10 years. So if your life-expectancy is high, you will need a second operation after 10-15 years. For this reason itself, bioprosthetic surgery is recommended to sexagenarians or septuagenarians who can spend the rest of their lives soundly without the need of anticoagulants or re-operation.

Which is relatively better: Depends on the patient
It can be affirmed that the surgery type completely depends upon the current medical situation of the patient undergoing surgery. For younger people, mechanical heart valve surgery works better, because with medical assistance post-surgery, a sound life is possible without the need of another hospitalization or reiteration of the surgery.

On the other hand, older people, people who need to undergo dialysis from time to time and those who have bleeding disorders or other underlying medical conditions should go for bioprosthetic heart valve replacement surgery.

Causes & Symptoms Of Heart Valve Disease!

Complications in the heart valve occur when the functioning of the heart valve is impaired. Valves of the heart allow the blood in one direction and prevent the blood from flowing back into the ventricles of the heart.

Heart valve diseases can be classified as follows:

1. Valvular stenosis
This condition occurs when the valves of the heart do not open completely due to stiffness. As the opening is narrow, the heart has to work hard to pump blood. This condition may lead to heart failure.

2. Valvular insufficiency
This is a condition where the valve does not close tightly. This causes some of the blood to flow back to the valve. As this condition deteriorates the heart has to work harder to pump blood.

Types and Causes of valve diseases:

1. Acquired valve disease
The structure of the valve changes due to various infections or rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever is caused by bacterial infection that had not been treated. It tends to occur in children and cause inflammation of the valves of the heart.

2. Congenital valve disease
This condition usually affects the pulmonary valve where the size of the valve is abnormal.

3. Bicuspid aortic valve disease
It is a type of valve disease that impairs the aortic valve. Instead of the regular three cusps, the bicuspid valve only has two. This may cause the valve to be stiff or cause it to leak.

4. Mitral valve prolapse
This condition causes the valve to flop back when the heart contracts. This condition also causes the leaflets of the valve to turn irregularly and cause it to stretch. This condition causes the valve to leak.

The symptoms of valve disease are as follows:

1. Weakness: This condition may cause weakness and cause severe discomfort while performing daily activities.
2. Palpitations: Symptoms such as irregular heartbeats, skipped beats and rapid heart rhythm occurs in this condition.
3. Rapid weight gain: This condition can cause you to gain weight very rapidly.
4. It may cause swelling in your ankles, abdomen and feet.
5. This condition causes shortness of breath

Why It Is Important To Manage Stress In Diabetes?

Why It Is Important To Manage Stress In Diabetes?

Keeping the blood sugar level within the accepted level can be a challenging at times. This is because the blood sugar is affected by a range of factors including lifestyle factors. Here is a brief roadmap to manage diabetes by following simple lifestyle changes:

Healthy eating is an art. It is one of the cornerstones of healthy living with or without high blood sugar. People suffering from blood sugar has more reasons to be specific about food to keep the blood sugar level under control.

  1. Portion size and carbohydrate counting: Carbohydrates play a key role in managing diabetes. It is, therefore, necessary to keep a close count of carbohydrates. People consuming insulin need to be more careful in this regard. One good way to ensure that carbohydrates consumption is under control is to ensure that the portion size is controlled.
  2. A balanced meal: A good meal should be a mixture of fruits, proteins, fats, starches, and vegetables. Few carbohydrates such as those found in vegetables, starch and whole grains serve a diabetic person better.
  3. Track your medication and meal: Too little consumption of food can lead to a sharp fall in blood sugar level. Too much food, on the other hand, can lead to high blood sugar. It makes sense to maintain a balance between food and medication.

Physical activity goes a long way in managing blood sugar level. Regular exercise consumes sugar in the form of energy and helps to maintain diabetes. Daily exercise along with certain household chores such as gardening can help to maintain diabetes:

  1. Make an exercise plan: It makes sense to consult the doctor or a healthcare professional before starting to exercise. Depending on the level of blood sugar, an exercise plan should be chosen. One should maintain a minimum of half an hour exercise schedule daily.
  2. Be prepared: Sudden change in lifestyle such as starting an exercise regimen can take a toll on the body. It is therefore advised that a person prepares himself by taking short snacks before starting to exercise. Staying hydrated is another crucial thing. Checking the blood sugar level before and after working out is a good habit.

Stress plays the devil in shooting up the blood sugar level. It becomes extremely difficult to manage diabetes with stress. Here is a list of important things to stay away from stress:

  1. Find a pattern: Logging stress within a scale of 1 to 10 can help to find a pattern. If the blood sugar levels are found to be high under stressful days, a person would know what should be skipped to cut down stress.
  2. Get help: Getting professional help to cut down stress is a good idea. Consulting a psychiatrist/psychologist can prove to be helpful in cutting down stress. Once the stress levels are down, blood sugar level automatically comes down.

5 Ways To Treat Lower Back Pain!

5 Ways To Treat Lower Back Pain!

Back pain is a common source of pain and can be acute, sub-acute or chronic in nature. Back pain is classified along the segments of the spine and can be divided into neck pain, middle back pain, lower back pain and coccydynia or tail bone pain. Back pain can be quite troublesome as it disables a person to move about freely due to constant ache.

Here are some procedures for the treatment of back pain.

  1. Give your back some rest: Most people who get back pain become obsessed with it and end up getting MRI scans and x-rays done. Some even take injections and other such measures without recognizing the intensity of the pain. It is advised not to rush into the matter immediately and the simplest way to cure the pain is by resting. 90% of pains in the back resolve by themselves in 6 weeks and so you must give your back a break instead of taking medical actions and let time do the healing.
  2. Pills: While you let time treat your back pain, sometimes the pain increases and gives you a bad time. In this case, you can take anti-inflammatory medicinal pills such as ibuprofen or naproxen. These pills will help you ease the pain. However, using such pills for a continued period of time causes side effects such as gastrointestinal disorders. Hence, you should not take them for more than ten days at a stretch.
  3. Hot and cold compress: Apply a bag of frozen peas or an ice pack to the affected area for 48 hours after the pain appears. Every session should be about 20 minutes, and you should take more than two sessions each day. After two days, repeat the same procedure using a heat pad instead of ice. The cooling procedure shuts down your blood capillaries and reduces the flow of blood to that area. The swelling is eased as a result. The heating, on the other hand, loosens tight muscles and increases the blood circulation, providing extra oxygen.
  4. Change your mattress: People who sleep on firm mattresses and cushions on their beds are at a higher risk of having a back pain. According to studies, it has been observed that people sleeping on medium-firm mattresses have healthier backs. In case your mattress in sagging or is over 8 years old, you should replace it.
  5. Acupuncture: When your back pain is very severe, you can resort to acupuncture, which provides efficient pain relief. The procedure changes the way your nerves react and reduces inflammation.

Back pain arises from various reasons and should always be taken care of. Unattended back pain worsens and makes the affected person suffer.

Migraine - Know The Symptoms And Treatment!

Migraine - Know The Symptoms And Treatment!

Headaches and migraines can vary drastically depending on their duration, specific symptoms and the person they are affecting. The more you know about your specific type of headache or migraine, the better prepared you will be to treat them—and possibly even prevent them. The two types of migraine are-

  1. Migraine without aura: The majority of migraine sufferers have Migraine without Aura.
  2. Migraine with aura: Migraine with Aura refers to a range of neurological disturbances that occur before the headache begins, usually lasting about 20-60 minutes.

Symptoms of migraine vary and also depend on the type of migraine. A migraine has four stages: prodrome, aura, headache and postdrome. But it is not necessary that all the migraine sufferers experience all the four stages.

Prodrome: The signs of this begin to appear a day or two days before the headache starts. The signs include depression, constipation, food cravings, irritability, uncontrollable yawning, neck stiffness and hyperactivity.
Migraine Aura: Auras are a range of symptoms of the central nervous system. These might occur much before or during the migraine, but most people get a migraine without an aura. Auras usually begin gradually and increase in intensity. They last for an hour or even longer and are

  • Visual: Seeing bright spots, various shapes, experiencing vision loss, and flashes of light
  • Sensory: Present in the form of touch sensations like feeling of pins and needles in the arms and legs
  • Motor: Usually related with the movement problems like the limb weakness
  • Verbal: It is related with the speech problems

Headache: In case of a migraine attack one might experience:

  • Pain on both sides or one side of the head
  • Pain is throbbing in nature
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Sensitivity to smells, sound and light
  • Vision is blurred
  • Fainting and lightheadedness

Postdrome: This is the final phase of the migraine. During this phase one might feel fatigued, though some people feel euphoric.

Red flags that the patient may be having underlying serious disorder not migraine

  1. Onset of headaches >50 years
  2. Thunderclap headache - subarachnoid haemorrhage
  3. Neurological symptoms or signs
  4. Meningism
  5. Immunosuppression or malignancy
  6. Red eye and haloes around lights - acute angle closure glaucoma
  7. Worsening symptoms
  8. Symptoms of temporal arteritis

These patients require CT scan / MRI or CSF examination. Most Migraine patients do not need these tests.

Diagnosis of Migraine: Usually migraines go undiagnosed and thus are untreated. In case you experience the symptoms regularly then talk to the doctor, who evaluates the symptoms and can start a treatment. You can also be referred to a neurologist who is trained to treat the migraines and other conditions. During the appointment the neurologist usually asks about the family history of headaches and migraines along with your symptoms and medical history.

The doctor might advise for some tests like:

  1. Blood Tests: These reveal problems with the blood vessel like an infection in the spinal cord and brain.
  2. CT scan: Used to diagnose the infections, tumors, brain damage, and bleeding that cause the migraines.
  3. MRI: This helps to diagnose the tumors bleeding infections, neurological conditions, and strokes.
  4. Lumbar Puncture: For analyzing infections and neurological damages. In lumbar puncture a thin needle is inserted between the two vertebrae to remove a sample of the cerebrospinal fluid for analysis.

Migraine treatments can help stop symptoms and prevent future attacks.

Many medications have been designed to treat migraines. Some drugs often used to treat other conditions also may help relieve or prevent migraines. Medications used to combat migraines fall into two broad categories:

  • Pain-relieving medications. Also known as acute or abortive treatment, these types of drugs are taken during migraine attacks and are designed to stop symptoms.
  • Preventive medications. These types of drugs are taken regularly, often on a daily basis, to reduce the severity or frequency of migraines.

Your treatment strategy depends on the frequency and severity of your headaches, the degree of disability your headaches cause, and your other medical conditions.

Some medications aren't recommended if you're pregnant or breast-feeding. Some medications aren't given to children. Your doctor can help find the right medication for you.

What Is An Abnormal Nipple Discharge?

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

What Is An Abnormal Nipple Discharge?

Nipple discharge is a common part of breast functioning, which normally occurs during breast-feeding or pregnancy. It is often associated with the changes of menstrual hormone. The milky discharge post breast-feeding usually continues for up to two years after stopping nursing. The condition normally gets resolved on its own but if the situation persists for a long time resort to medical assistance.

The following are some of the causes of normal nipple discharge:

  • Stimulation: Normal nipple discharge can arise due to stimulation; chafing of your breast skin due to tight bras or vigorous exercises.
  • Pregnancy: Most women tend to witness clear nipple discharge in the early stages of their pregnancy. Towards the later stages, this discharge usually turns watery and becomes milky in color
  • Stopped Breast-feeding: In some cases, nipple discharge continues for some time after the mother has stopped breast-feeding her newborn
  • Hormonal Imbalance: Some women notice tenderness in breasts and nipple discharge during their menstrual cycle

What is an abnormal nipple discharge: An abnormal nipple discharge is usually bloody in color and is accompanied with tenderness of the breast. Papilloma is a non-cancerous tumor that is often responsible for bloody nipple discharge. Continuous nipple discharge from one of the breasts or nipple discharge that arises without any stimulation or external irritation is abnormal in nature.

The possible causes of abnormal nipple discharge include:

  1. Abscess: It is an assortment of pus that get accumulated within the tissues of your body. It is usually accompanied by redness, pain and swelling. Boils and carbuncles are types of abscess. Formation of abscess in breasts may result in nipple discharge.
  2. Breast cancer: Breast cancer often results in bloody nipple discharge and is often found with a presence of lump in one of the breasts.
  3. Mastitis: It is a breast infection that affects the tissues of the breast and is usually prominent during breastfeeding. Fatigue, fever and body aches are common in this situation.
  4. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS): Normally characterized by the growth of cancerous cells in the milk ducts of your breasts, it is generally identified through mammography screening.
  5. Fibroadenoma: In this situation most young women witness an appearance of solid, tumor like structure
  6. Galactorrhea: Galactorrhea is nipple discharge of milk when not pregnant or breastfeeding. The discharge can vary in color and can be expressed from either or both breasts.

What Causes Galactorrhea: Galactorrhea is commonly caused by hyperprolactinemia, especially when it is associated with amenorrhea. Hyperprolactinemia is most often induced by medication or associated with pituitary adenomas or other sellar or suprasellar lesions.

The release of prolactin from the pituitary is held in check by dopamine from the hypothalamus. Prolactin release is encouraged by serotonin and thyrotropin-releasing hormone. This balance can be disrupted by medication (ie. antipsychotics), underactive thyroid function, pituitary tumors, hypothalamic tumors, damage to the pituitary stalk, nipple stimulation, chest trauma, herpes zoster, and emotional stress as well as a variety of other factors.

How Magnesium Deficiency Affects Your Body?

We all know about magnesium as a mineral, but what most individuals do not know is the fact that it is a very important mineral for our bodily health. Magnesium is involved with more or less 300 complex metabolic processes in our body, thus earning the title of ‘master mineral’.

Here is a list of reasons why magnesium holds an important place in our body.

It is responsible for transportation of calcium across cell membranes. As such, it helps calcium get into the bone matter. Like we all know, magnesium is anti-inflammatory. It helps in waiving conditions mentioned below:

  1. Arthritis
  2. Alzheimer’s disease
  3. High blood pressure
  4. Respiratory issues
  5. Diabetes

So magnesium deficiency can definitely cause numerous problems in the human body. This element works in our body at a cellular level. It is important to have a check up done with the doctor to ensure the magnesium level, however, a simple a blood test cannot determine the presence or absence of it. Here are a few signs that might suggest that an individual is suffering from magnesium deficiency.

  1. A lot of calcium deficiency which means brittle bones
  2. Very poor heart health
  3. A lot of unnecessary weakness
  4. Very frequent muscle cramps at unusual situations
  5. Tremors, nausea and unnecessary anxiety
  6. High blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
  7. Difficulty in swallowing the food
  8. Poor memory
  9. Lots and lots of useless confusion

Although individuals with magnesium deficiency suffer from these symptoms, it is not necessary that any individual suffering from such symptoms might have magnesium deficiency. So, the only way to improve magnesium amount in the body is by changing your diet and including magnesium rich foods or my supplementing your food with magnesium-based food products.

Magnesium overdose is close to impossible and so many would not check their magnesium intake. However, consuming too much of anything can never be a good idea. Excessive magnesium intake might end up causing the following issues:

  • Irregular heartbeats in individuals
  • Slow breathing
  • Diarrhoea

This excess amount of magnesium in the body might be due to the fact that not all supplements can be easily absorbed by the body. So it is a better idea to eat inexpensive food to keep the magnesium levels at par with the bodily requirements.

Here is a list of items that can relieve the deficiency symptoms of low magnesium.

  1. Seeds of pumpkin
  2. Seeds of sun flower
  3. Soya bean
  4. Black beans
  5. Sesame seeds
  6. Almond
  7. Spinach and many more

Carbon Facial - How Does It Benefit You?

Carbon Facial is a non- invasive procedure which involves the application of the liquid carbon on the face which later on penetrates into the skin through the pores on your skin. Here the carbon is said to absorb the contaminants and later on, the laser light that is passed through the skin destroys the carbon in its entirety.

These days we encounter with various facial issues like blackheads, pores on the skin among other skin problems. This is quite irritating as it destroys the beauty of your face. In order to get rid of stuff like that, carbon Facial is one of the finest methods available. Through this method, you can easily remove dead skin, blackheads and oil from y, ur skin.

Here are a few benefits of carbon facial which rejuvenates the beauty of your skin
It is often said that among all other methods, carbon facial is considered to be highly beneficial for people with blackheads, acne problem, oily skin and pores on the skin.

  • Carbon has the capacity of exterminating the dirt particles along with other contaminants from the skin, giving a shiny appearance to your skin. When the laser passes through your skin, it has the ability to destroy the carbon particles on the skin.
  • Carbon peels additionally focus on the profound layers of the skin to fortify collagen generation, which thusly delivers firmer, plumper skin, diminishes scarcely discernible differences and wrinkles, and leaves skin feeling more tightly and sparkling.
  • During the process of the carbon peeling, the heat that is produced by the laser generates a lot of advantage like it prevents the bacteria from creating acne on the face. It also prevents pimples and other outbreaks on the skin, trying to make your skin look more shiny and fresh. There is no harm in using the carbon laser facial method. It is completely safe to use this method to prevent the outbreak of extra oil on the face which is bad for the skin.
  • As this method exfoliates the skin, it results in a radiant and softer skin which is again good for the skin and the appearance of the skin. This method also plays an imperative role in reducing the pore size and also focuses on brightening the skin tone.
  • It also plays an important role in tightening the dilated pores which is again good for the appearance of the skin.

As compared to all the skin care treatments, this treatment is considered to be the best and it is to be taken care through the daily skin- care routine along with daily use of sunscreen which would help the skin to look lively and clear of all the acne and pores. There is nothing harmful involved in this method but this method is exclusively for those who are wealthy and have money to make an investment.

Psychosis - How Does Cannabis Lead To It?

It is really important to enlighten yourself with the meaning of the word 'cannabis'. Cannabis Sativa is a kind of hemp plant from which you derive hash, hash oil and marijuana. Cannabis is popularly known by a litany of street names like weed, pot, grass, homegrown or even ganja. Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is a chief chemical present in the plant. This chemical has the potential to alter the way you think, feel or work and hence there is a need to know its link with psychosis. Psychosis on the other hand aims to explain mental conditions felt by a person. In most cases a stark departure from reality is noticed which is usually the case after consuming cannabis as well.

Psychotic effects of Cannabis:

  1. Irregular sleep patterns: The effect of Marijuana or hash can upset your sleep patterns. A check has to be exercised therefore. It can make you feel too tired and exhausted to rest for long hours.
  2. Increased anxiety: Many times, the hemp plant has been found to play up with your coping skills. You might feel anxious at the drop of a hat. Anxiety takes a toll on mental peace and affects your physical health.
  3. Problem in thinking clearly: Under the effect of Cannabis, you tend to live in a parallel universe. Your mind makes up imaginary situations thinking it to be real. This muddles up your capability to think clearly.
  4. Lack of innovation: Continuous consumption of the drug can also make a person repetitive; you stop conceiving new ideas.
  5. Reduced confidence: Studies show how you can become very nervous due to the effects of cannabis.
  6. Reticence: Communication can be a problem if you have been using the plant for a long time. You tend to bottle up your emotions and also your fears.
  7. Paranoia and suspiciousness: You might even grow suspicious of people you trusted all along. Friends, relatives, parents are doubted. Obsession with the slightest of things is also a resultant effect.
  8. Delusions and Hallucinations: Being 'high' is a positive effect as it helps you to relax, but if unhindered it could lead to serious hallucinations. Your existence in a hallucinated world can even turn fatal in some cases.

Nutrition & Yoga - How Can They Support Digestion & Immunity?

PG Diploma in Dietician and Nutrition

Nutrition & Yoga - How Can They Support Digestion & Immunity?

Yoga is not simply a set of exercises but a lifestyle. When practicing yoga, asanas and nutrition go hand in hand to improve your quality of life. Your digestive system, immunity and energy levels are directly linked to the food you intake. If there is a problem with any of these, yoga asanas can help resolve it.

- Not all food is easy to digest. Instead of popping laxatives and antacids after every meal, change the food you're eating. Citrus fruits and leafy vegetables that are rich in fiber aid digestion and prevent constipation. Some foods like yogurt, bananas and garlic are probiotics that support the growth of gut bacteria and keep your stomach healthy. Also include carminatives or foods that prevent the formation of gas like cumin, ginger and oatmeal.

- Yogic asanas such as the spinal twist, Apanasana and Paschimottanasana can help smoothen the digestive process.

- Eating the right food can help boost your immunity. Citrus fruits are rich sources of vitamin C that directly strengthen the immune system. Herbs like turmeric, ginger and garlic are rich in antioxidants and linked to the prevention of a number of diseases including several types of cancer. Proteins also help nourish your immune system and hence should not be ignored.

- A combination of asanas and yogic breathing techniques can help boost your immunity. Some asanas to try include Viparita Karani, Bhujangasana, Matsyasana and Adho Mukha Svanasana. These poses help lower stress and boost immunity by pumping rich oxygenated blood to all the parts of the body.

- The food you eat is turned into glucose to fuel the body and maintain a constant supply of energy. Soy and green leafy vegetables that are rich in iron can effectively boost your energy levels. Fruits like apples, bananas and oranges can also help increase your energy. Yogurt rich in magnesium does not directly contribute towards the creation of glucose but helps the body release this energy whenever needed.

- Yoga asanas help increase blood flow and increase the heart's capacity to pump blood through the body. A few yoga poses that can boost energy are the camel pose, tree pose and warrior asana.

- Sipping on a cup of green tea is a good way to end the day and relax. Other food like honey, milk, celery and oatmeal can also help calm the body and fight off the day's stress. Apart from being delicious, dark chocolate also releases hormones that ease stress and help relax a person.

Practising yoga breathing techniques like pranayama can effectively release tension. Supta Baddha Konasana, Viparita Karani and the Supta Matsyendrasana can also help increase energy levels.
