Dicorate is Valproate which has side effect on liver functions and also weight gain. Check your liver functions once every 6 months for 1 or 2 years and later once a year. Also check your weight every 3 to 6 months.

Epilepsy - Signs and Symptoms You Should Know!

Epilepsy - Signs and Symptoms You Should Know!

Epilepsy is a disorder of the central nervous system, thus it is basically a neurological disorder. In this the nerve cell activity of the brain is disrupted and causes seizures along with episodes of unusual behavior along with the loss of consciousness. The symptoms of the seizure can vary and some people with epilepsy just stare blankly for few seconds when a seizure takes place, while some twitch their arms and legs repeatedly.

Symptoms of Epilepsy:
As epilepsy is caused by the abnormal activities in the brain cells, seizures affect the processes with which the brain coordinates. Some signs and symptoms are:

  1. Staring blankly
  2. Confusion which is temporary
  3. Uncontrolled jerking movements of the legs and arms
  4. Loss of awareness and consciousness
  5. Psychic symptoms

Mostly the symptoms vary depending on the type of the seizure. The seizures are further classified into focal and generalized depending on which part of the brain shows abnormal activity.

Focal seizures
When seizures are due to the abnormal activity of the cells in just one area then it is known as focal seizures. These seizures are of two types:

  1. Simple partial seizures or the focal seizures without loss of consciousness. These seizures basically alter the emotions and the things like change in smell, look, sound and taste. These also result in the involuntary jerking of the body like the legs and arms, with spontaneous sensory symptoms like the tingling and flashing of the lights.
  2. Complex partial seizures or the focal dyscognitive seizures. These seizures have a loss of awareness and consciousness. One might just stare blankly into space in this seizure and performs repetitive activities like swallowing, chewing, walking in circles and chewing.

Generalized seizures
There are six types of generalized seizures. These are:

  1. Absence seizures, also known as petit mal seizures, are commonly seen in children and are characterized by subtle body movements like lip smacking and eye blinking and staring blankly into space. These also cause loss of consciousness.
  2. Tonic seizures lead to stiffening of the muscles. These affect the muscles of the legs and arms and also cause to fall to the ground.
  3. Atonic seizures are also called as drop seizures. These cause loss of control in the muscles, thereby leading to collapse or fall.
  4. Clonic seizures are the rhythmic and jerking muscle movements. These affect the arms, face and neck.
  5. Myoclonic seizures appear as twitches in the arms and legs.
  6. Tonic-clonic seizures also known as grand mal seizures are very dramatic and lead to body stiffening, abrupt loss of consciousness, shaking and loss of bladder control and tongue biting.

I am 27 year old boy suffering from anixitydisorder .general anxiety disorder. Please tell me the best antidepressant...
Dear Lybrate User, You may not need medication. Please consult a Counsellor first. The Counsellor will help you to understand what is causing this anxiety/fear. The Counsellor will also help you to cope up with this. Please understand that medicines for anxiety will give relief from your symptoms but will not treat the root cause of your anxiety. Hence, you will feel better only when you have taken the medicine. Once its effect reduces, you may again be anxious. The medicines also may have some side effects. Hence consult a Counsellor first. If there is a need, the Counsellor will refer you to a Psychiatrist.

Everyone has frightening or anxious moments. This particular feeling may stop you from living a normal life. If you are prone to anxiety you have two choices. Give in to it or learn to live with it.  When you wake up tomorrow start doing something right away, and keep busy all day.  Sometimes it's doing the dishes or working in your garden, reading or meditating. Just sitting around and thinking about your worries won't make them go away. Focus your attention on where the feeling of anxiousness is in your body and keep your attention there until the feeling moves or dissolves. Anxiety will grow if it's not directed into some positive action. Find someone who needs you and lend him or her a helping hand. It will almost always take your mind off your problems and fears. Helping others is actually a way of taking action and responsibility for your own healing Talk to someone. Following all these will automatically reduces your worries and anxiety level and will let you to take rest and you will sleep well.

Getting up early is must for good mind set. Avoid canned and preserved foods. Try to have fresh food rest over food produces free radicals in body which is harmfull for brain and other vital organs ensures intake of fresh and saturated fresh air in mrng hrs in an open area (deep breathing will be best) 2 drops of BADAM ROGAN in each nostril before sleep for regular basis will helps a lot. Some ayurvedic medicines are also available for this in market you can consult me back if you also want to start that. But only nasal adminstration along with above mentioned tip will also be sufficient.

Sir, actually my problem is I am feeling so depressed always, lack of confidence, dull. Previously I used to be very ...
Hello lybrate-user. Please follow all these steps .if it doesn't work then go fro personal counselling in your near by area. To overcome depression you MUST do these 3 things: 1. Improve your sleep. 2. Alter the way you think. 3. Produce much more Serotonin. Before explaining how to achieve the above I should say that I have only joined Quora today so am unfamiliar with usual procedure but as I specialise in overcoming depression without medication I could not leave an individual suffering in the way that you are without responding. I am going to suggest that you visit my website to make use of some free resources. I stress that I am NOT endeavouring to solicit business! You are very welcome to download the two free Hypnosis audio tracks on the site. One will help to improve your sleep pattern, the other will help to reframe your thinking. You will also find a 40 minute video which will explain in more detail what's going on in your mind and why it's happening and what you can do to change things. As for Serotonin, it is a neurochemical which currently you are not producing enough. You need Serotonin to cope with life's pressures, to sleep well, to cope with physical pain, to relax and to be happy! In simple terms, you need to do the following to produce more Serotonin: 1. Positive thinking. 2. Positive Actions. 3. Positive Interactions. Try this right now. Close your eyes and in your mind take yourself back to a time and place that you felt happy, proud, successful, when you felt good about yourself. Maybe you had done something good? Achieved something? Visualise it again, allow yourself to live that moment again. See it and feel it in as much detail as possible. Did you do it? If so, how do you feel now? Do you feel slightly more relaxed? If not, practice again until you do feel something. If you did notice a slight difference in how relaxed you feel, THAT is Serotonin and THAT is what I mean by Positive thinking. Because the way we think, determines which neurochemicals are released and that determines the way we feel and that in turn dictates what we can and can't do, what is and isn't possible! However, it works just as well when visualising the future positively as the brain can't tell the difference between real life and imagination, so decide on some SMALL thing you want to achieve and visualise yourself DOING IT. This will achieve many things which are too long to go into in detail, so please just try it! THEN, start to actually DO these small things you've been visualising. THIS is what I mean by positive actions and they too will produce MORE Serotonin. Lastly, Positive Interactions. You MUST start to Positively Interact with other people to overcome your depression as this is the best source of Serotonin. So to make it easier, use the technique above. Visualise yourself interacting with new people, smiling chatting, laughing etc. This WILL work if you DO IT! I shall close with some words from the great Albert Einstein. He defined 'Insanity' as doing the same things over, and over, and over again and expecting different results. If you want to FEEL different you MUST DO something different! Best wishes.
