How much time should I take for drinking alcohol when I have taken antibiotic medicine?
Dear Fameer, There may be some interaction of alcohol with antibiotics. It depends on food taken, type and quantity of alcohol, type of antibiotic, duration of drinking, the medical illness for which antibiotics are given, age, sex, etc, etc. So, the best advice will be to quit drinking forever with this illness. Quitting alcohol gives many health benefits. Try now. All the best.

My wife aged, 52 years, a housewife, has of late been undergoing a lot of anxiety.
When anxiety comes analyse her situation. In that situation give proper support. Talk some general issues. Maintain good friendly rapport with her. Do not talk unnecessary issues with her. Talk always general matters. Do not tell your personal problems with her. Maintain reservedness with her. Provide good family environment. Treat to her as a friend. You can only helpful to come out of this problem. Better to her morning walking, marketing or evening walk. Go both of them temples or movies or parks. Better to give the most friendly environment. Listen patiently with her personal problems. Create you are the best friend of herself. Do some work above mentioned manner. Better to practice yoga and meditation. Do not use any medication for this problem. Do not allow her alone. Be share all her personal feelings and problems very patiently. If it is not possible to yourself. Then in that case it is better to consult qualified psychologist in hyderabad. Be sociable all the time and be friendly all the time. Ok all the best.

Am having big stress problems. What will be the best relief way.
You can follow following tips 1. Meditate A few minutes of practice per day can help ease anxiety. “Research suggests that daily meditation may alter the brain’s neural pathways, making you more resilient to stress,” 2. Breathe deeply Close your eyes keeping a palm over abdomen, inhale deeply through nose, feel as breath is coming from abdomen and reaching head, feel the reverse on exhaling 3. Be present Enjoy every moment, feel the air blowing over your face, feel the tapping of footsteps on walking 4. Reach out, increase your social network, share your feelings with your close friend 5. Tune up to your body Feel that how everyday stress affects your body Follow a healthy lifestyle with good food and drink plenty of water, go for regular exercise

hello sir, I am neenu doing mba in chennai. I am facing some problem mattanly and physically also. I cannot concentrate in class also give me some suggestions as soon as possible.

You must be under some stress or creating stress. Meet with a counselor and do sort that out for good memory. In the meantime do the following: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Dear user. Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking or of speaking in general. This is part of general anxiety disorder. There should some other anxiety problems, you are facing. We need to find those and cure all of those anxieties together. Addressing them one by one will trigger other problems. Desensitization therapy is most used and cure can be seen within 6 months if followed correctly. Take care.

Based on the history the pains can be due to fever as acute onset febrile illnesses present like such prodromal signs prior to full onset of symptoms. Fever with chills needs evaluation with complete blood count, blood cultures, urinalysis and malaria workup. Meanwhile using analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen will help with the symptoms. Decision of antibiotics or anti malarial should be based after labs. as for your taste is concerned ,fever causes loss of taste buds( bald tongue) try to add some ginger in warm water and drinks sips in between. this will improve the taste and don't use tongue cleaner.

Social Anxiety - Common Factors Behind It!

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Social Anxiety - Common Factors Behind It!

Social anxiety disorder is a chronic mental health condition in which a person has excessive and unreasonable fear of certain social situations. Anxiety and self-consciousness arise from a fear of being scrutinized, embarrassed or judged by others. The fear may be made worse by a lack of social skills or experience in social situations. This persistent anxiety can build into a panic attack, and the affected person may start avoiding social situations under extreme distress. People with social anxiety disorder also suffer anticipatory anxiety, which is the fear of a situation even before it happens. In many cases, the person is aware that the fear is unreasonable and overblown, yet is unable to overcome it.

Like many other mental health conditions, social anxiety disorder arises from a complex interaction of environment and genes. The possible causes are:

  1. Inherited traits - Genetic factors may contribute to the development of social anxiety disorder if it is present in a first-degree relative (parents, siblings or child).
  2. Brain structure - Nuclei shaped part of the brain called amygdala may play a role in controlling the fear response. People with overactive amygdala may have a heightened fear response, increasing anxiety in social situations.
  3. Environmental factors - Social anxiety disorder may be a learned behavior. You may develop the condition after witnessing the anxious behavior of others. Also, there may be an association between social anxiety disorder and overprotective parents wanting to control their children.

Social anxiety disorder is the second most common type of anxiety disorder, which most often surfaces in adolescence or early adulthood. It is more common in women than in men. There is no way to predict what will cause social anxiety disorder, but some steps can be taken to reduce the impact of symptoms by getting help early instead of delaying, managing stress in daily life and avoiding unhealthy substances like alcohol, drugs and caffeine.

Sertraline and mirtazapine can be prescribed together. As per what schedule you r taking its correct, avoid taking them together as mirtazapine in morning hours may cause drowsiness. My comments are only useful" if you are taking a valid prescription after consulting psychiatrist"

Hi lybrate-user, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. Many of the sleep medicines in themselves can be addictive although they will provide a temporary relief from problems. In the end, we don't want to end up in a situation where you are addicted both alcohol as well as sleep medicines. Depending upon the amount and regularity if drinking, we may have to give medicines to tide over the withdrawal symptoms including sleep, but also many other issues. But I strongly suggest that this must be done under strict medical supervision and certainly not on your own. Some of the things that you can do on your own are getting blood tests like hemogram, LFT, RFT, electrolytes, RBS, vitamin B12 levels and thyroid profile. I also suggest that you can start tablet thiamine (TIM 100) as it is quite safe and beneficial. But other interventions must be done after proper evaluation, so please meet your local expert. Take care!

Dear Ms. lybrate-user, Feeling anxious, developing palpitations, and not feeling comfortable while talking to someone or in social situations is suggestive of social anxiety disorder. However, more details would be required in order to reach a definitive diagnosis. You should consider seeking a psychiatric consultation and get yourself completely evaluated. Social anxiety disorder is a treatable disorder and treatment with medications and cognitive behaviour therapy will help you get better. Best wishes.
