Dear Doctor Ji, I am 63 years old and I work in a private company as an accounts manager. I take medicine for high BP and blood sugar. Both are within normal range. I always carry two packets of marie biscuits and when I feel hungry I take few biscuits and water. You suggest peanuts. Salted peanuts are available but will it do any harm to my health and BP and sugar problem. Kindly confirm. Even potatoes chips are available. Please confirm.

It would have been better if you had mentioned the blood glucose readings both fasting and pp as well as hba1c% and bp. When diabetes is in control fasting should be closer to 100 mg. Pp 150 to 160 mg or up to 180 mg and hba1c% <7. Bp should be 130/80 mm hg. As regards eating a few biscuits, let me tell you, it is better to avoid them. At the most 2 can be aeten, the reason is that all biscuits give about 30 plus calories per piece and contain simple carb, hence increasing the blood glucose rapidly. Peanuts rosted ones without salt are good about 30 g per day. Salt intake is not good for a person with high bp. Potato chips, other packaged foods, are harmful, as they contain too much of salt and trans fats. Even if one consumes peanuts those should be brought from home, packed will have salt in them. You have not mentioned the weight, so so bmi can not be calculated. It should be <23 kg/m2. Thanks.

Always consider 2nd reading. You need to understand about high blood pressure.  Normal range of blood pressure is between 90/60 to 140/90, anything above or below is is abnormal. Many factors can affect blood pressure, including: 1) The amount of water and salt you have in your body 2) The condition of your kidneys, nervous system, or blood vessels 3) Your hormone levels 4) your lifestyle - smoking, drinking, exercise  You are more likely to be told your blood pressure is too high as you get older. This is because your blood vessels become stiffer as you age. When that happens, your blood pressure goes up. High blood pressure increases your chance of having a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, or early death. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. DASH lowers high blood pressure and improves levels of cholesterol. This reduces your risk of getting heart disease. The DASH Diet Emphasizes vegetables, fruits, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Includes whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds, nuts, and vegetable oils. Limits sodium, sweets, sugary beverages, and red meats. Along with DASH, other lifestyle changes can help lower your blood pressure. They include staying at a healthy weight, exercising, and not smoking. My advice to you would be 1) Keep a BP daily record for at least one week 2) Basic tests should be one to rule out cardiac / kidney issues 3) unless any recent evaluation has been done I would advice these test ECG ECHO Lipid Profile TSH KFT  Renal doppler  Get back to me with a detailed history and  old / new records for a better individualized advice.

Dear lybrateuser, -to lower your blood pressure firstly you have to develop a healthy lifestyle & then go for medicines as once started you may have to take medicines lifelong -in diet avoid fried, processed & junk foods, have more of fruits & vegetables including green leafy ones, have low fat dairy products, have more of wholegrains like whole wheat bread/chapatti, brown rice, corn, oats, have beans, sprouts, legumes, pulses, flax seeds -restrict tea, coffee (1-2cups/day), salt, sugar -use olive oil, canola oil or safflower oil for cooking, consumption should not be more than 1 teaspoonful/day -avoid pickles, papad, fried snacks as they contain lot of salt & saturated fats -exercise regularly, walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, play outdoor games for 30-40 min, also do yoga, meditation 5-10 min daily -sleep well for 7-8 hrs at night, keep sleep & ake up time fixed -at work also get up every half to one hour walk around & come back -distress by listening to music, reading, follow a hobby -check bp on rising in morning (basal bp) regularly, also after activity.

What's the home remedy for thyroid? How to reduce high blood pressure? Please tell me exercise & food.
by saying thyroid if you are referring to hypothyroidism, then there is no home remedy other than avoiding following soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. Plus consuming good deal of green leafy vegetables, fruits. Using whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Avoiding using maida and other refined flours. With all this thyroxine tablets in adequate dose are required, without which hypothyroidism will not be controlled. To control bp main thing you have remember is to reduce salt intake to about 2.3 g a day. Also avoid high fat foods and processed foods. Thanks for the question.

6 Common Causes of Abnormal Heartbeat!

6 Common Causes of Abnormal Heartbeat!

Are you experiencing irregular and fluctuating heartbeats? Is your heartbeat too fast or too slow? If yes, then it signifies that you are suffering from arrhythmias or abnormal heart rhythms. This is a disorder which affects the heart rate or heart rhythm and the heartbeat becomes irregular.

Causes of abnormal heart rhythms
Arrhythmias occurs due to problems with the electrical conduction system of the heart. In this case, abnormal signals might occur; the electrical signals might get blocked or slowed down, or the electric signals may travel in different paths throughout the heart. Abnormal heartbeats are commonly caused by the following:

  1. Abnormal potassium levels in the body
  2. Heart attacks or due to a damaged heart muscle, owing to a previous heart attack
  3. Inborn heart diseases
  4. Cases of an enlarged heart and heart failure
  5. Overreaction of the thyroid gland
  6. Several other substances or medicines may lead to arrhythmias, such as alcohol, stimulant drugs, caffeine, nicotine, and antidepressant medicines or blood pressure medicines.

Common symptoms of this condition apart from irregular heartbeat patterns include chest pain, fainting, dizziness and light-headedness, trouble in breathing and paleness.

Diagnosis of abnormal heart rhythms
For the diagnosis of arrhythmias, your doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your heartbeat. Several health monitoring devices are used to detect abnormal heart rhythms. These include the Holter monitor and the event monitor, or a loop recorder.

Other diagnosis tests which are required to be carried out include coronary angiography, ECG or electrocardiogram, and an echocardiogram. A test known as an electrophysiology can be undertaken for getting a closer look at the electrical system of the heart.

Treatment for abnormal heart rhythms
When a case of arrhythmias is severe, urgent treatment is required for restoring the heart’s rhythm to normal. The different forms of treatment are as follows:

  1. Electrical shock therapy such as defibrillation or cardioversion
  2. Implanting of a heart pacemaker for a short term
  3. Certain medications which are given through the veins or orally
  4. A group of medicines known as anti-arrhythmic drugs is used for the prevention of recurrence of the condition and to keep the heart rate from fluctuating continually.
  5. Cardiac ablation may be carried out for destroying some areas in the heart from where the rhythm problems are caused.
  6. An implantable cardiac defibrillator is used in people who are at a risk of facing cardiac death.

In case you experience abnormal heart rhythm, you must consult a doctor immediately. You should only start taking medicines and follow a treatment after it has been recommended by a doctor. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
