About Donepezil

Donepezil, a cholinesterase inhibitor, is used to treat a brain disorder that affects the ability to remember, communicate, think clearly, and perform daily activities and may cause changes in mood and personality in people who have Alzheimer's disease. It improves mental function by increasing the amount of certain chemicals in the brain. However, it does not cure Alzheimer’s disease completely. Possible side effects of this medicine include loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, diarrhoea or muscle cramping.

Certain conditions may require you to be extra careful while taking this medicine. Inform your doctor if you have these conditions :

  • Pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • Are taking any other prescribed or over the counter medicines.
  • Are allergic to medicines, foods, or other substances.
  • A history of certain heart problems, stomach or bowel problems, liver or kidney problems, lung or breathing problems, muscle problems, low thyroid hormone levels, or urinary blockage.
  • Brain lesions or tumours, a recent head injury, or a history of seizures
  • Have Parkinson disease or metabolism problems

Donepezil comes as a tablet and an orally disintegrating tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food, in the evening just before bedtime. Your doctor may prescribe to you a low dose initially to decrease the risk of side effects and gradually increase your dose after 4 to 6 weeks. Your doctor may increase your dose again 3 or more months later. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it.

        These medicines may increase the risk of seizures if taken together. The risk is more in the elderly population with the history of head injury or seizures.
