About Calcium

Calcium is the key mineral which helps in the maintenance of bone health. It also has other benefits, for instance it improves muscle function, keeps heart rhythm strong and maintains the level of other minerals (potassium, magnesium, phosphorous) in the blood stream.

While Calcium is naturally found in dairy products or vegetables like kale and broccoli and cereals, the mineral is also prescribed as a supplement for the treatment of a number of health problems like osteoporosis and osteopenia. Calcium also effectively control hypertension and is known to reduce the symptoms of PMS to a great extent.

Calcium when consumed in normal doses can result in some side effects like gas, constipation and bloating. Calcium consumed in high doses can result in the formation of kidney stones in the body, especially in case of men. Individuals who are taking Calcium supplements as well as following a rich calcium diet are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

Before starting Calcium supplements, inform your doctor about any medicines and over the counter drugs that you are taking. This is primarily because, Calcium may react with other medication causing certain complications. Patients with kidney problem, bone tumours and heart issues should not take Calcium supplements unless otherwise recommended by their doctor.

Symptoms of overdose include lethargy, nausea, vomiting, coma. Following withdrawal of the drug, treatment consists of bed rest, liberal intake of fluids, reduced calcium intake, and cathartic administration.

Severe hypercalcemia requires I.V. hydration and forced diuresis. Urine output should be monitored and maintained at >3 mL/kg/hour. I.V. saline and natriuretic agents (eg, furosemide) can quickly and significantly increase excretion of calcium.
