Is Surgery The Best Option For Treating Breast Cancer?

MBBS, MS- General Surgery
General Surgeon,
Is Surgery The Best Option For Treating Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer that affects women. It is also deemed to be one of the major reason of death among women, though lung cancer is the leading cause of this. The chances that a woman may die of breast cancer is about 2.7% of the women who are suffering. Breast cancer is known to affect men as well, in certain cases. Breast cancer may be genetic but, in certain cases, it is caused due to excess intake of alcohol. Surgery is an option, but treatments also include therapies like radiation and chemo.

Treatment for breast cancer
Breast cancer can be treated in several ways; however, the treatment depends upon many factors. These factors include the type of breast cancer, its stage, sensitivity of a person to the hormones, age of the patient, health of the patient and most importantly, preferences of the patient. The most common treatment options for breast cancer are radiation therapy, biological therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and surgery.

Chemotherapy
Cytotoxic drugs are important medications that are used to eliminate cancer cells. This medication is used if the chances of the cancer cells spreading are high. This process is known as the adjuvant chemotherapy.
Many a time, the tumor increases in size and surgery becomes essential. This is when the chemotherapy is administered to reduce the tumor size and make it easier for the surgeons to remove the tumor. This process is referred to as neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can treat metastasized cancer or cancer that has affected other body parts, thereby reducing the symptoms, mostly in the advanced stages.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation is targeted towards the tumor in controlled doses so that the cancer cells are destroyed. Radiation therapy is mostly advised to the patients after they go through surgery, to eliminate the cancer cells that may still be there.

Hormone blocking therapy
Most people go through breast cancer that is hormone sensitive. The hormone blocking therapy helps in preventing the recurrence in this type of breast cancer. The hormone blocking therapy is also used to reduce the size of the tumor, but this method is also suggested after a person goes through surgery.

Biological treatment
There are some drugs that fall under this category that is used for destroying the various types of the breast cancer.

Surgery
If at all the patient requires surgery, it depends on his or her diagnosis reports and his or her will to undergo surgery. The types of surgery include Lumpectomy, Sentinel node biopsy, Mastectomy, Axillary lymph node dissection, and Reconstruction. Reconstruction is the method which the doctors make use of to make both the breasts look similar after the surgery is complete. There are several treatment options available to treat breast cancer, and it depends on the choice of the patient to opt for surgery. Surgery helps in eliminating the risk of the spreading of the cancer cells, and it is one of the most effective treatments for breast cancer.

Hernia Surgery - 10 Effective Tips For Speedy Recovery!

MBBS, MS- General Surgery
General Surgeon,
Hernia Surgery - 10 Effective Tips For Speedy Recovery!

You will definitely face many complications after a hernia surgery, but certain measures can lead you to a speedy recovery. Your main aim must be to ensure you don’t get any infection. Avoid any jerking like sneezing or coughing. Some of the tips for speedy recovery are mentioned below:

  1. Apply ice to reduce painIf you experience any form of swelling or pain, ice will help reduce it. Apply ice for 10-20 minutes in a day, and you will get your results. However, refrain from applying ice for too long. It might make the condition worse. Also, wrap up the ice in plastic or a piece of cloth and then apply it to the intended portion.
  2. Take regular medication: Patients experience fever and pain after a hernia surgery. To combat these, you can take prescribed medications from your doctor. Medications also aim in improving your immunity so that you do not get infections easily. Hence, the medications are not to be missed.
  3. Keep your wounds clean: The operated area must always be kept clean to prevent any form of infection. You must dress the wound daily and keep the incision points clean and dry. Change the dressing as your doctor has advised you to do. You can apply any antiseptic or any other cream but take your doctor’s permission first.
  4. Keep a pillow near you: When you get an urge to sneeze or an urge to a cough, just cover your incision with the pillow and do it.
  5. Maintain a proper dietA proper diet plays a significant role in the recovery process. Consume fruits to replenish your storehouse of nutrients. Include high-fiber food in your diet so that you don’t have to suffer from constipation. You need to avoid constipation as much as you can. If food doesn’t work, you can take stool softeners. Constipation will lead to extra pressure on the cuts which can lead to bleeding.
  6. Wear loose clothing: Don’t wear tight pants or clothing that will stick to your skin. The waistbands must be loose and not tight.
  7. Avoid lifting weights: Don’t lift weights. Lifting weights will cause stress at the cuts and may even lead to rupture so avoid doing strenuous activities.
  8. Go for a small walk: As soon as you feel a bit better go for a little walk. You need to move your muscles otherwise they will become stiff.
  9. Don’t smoke: Avoid smoking after the surgery as it will hamper your breathing and circulation process.
  10. Check out for warning signs: Always keep an eye on your wounds. Report to your doctor as soon as you see bleeding or anything abnormal.

Follow the tips mentioned above, and you will see how fast you will recover. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Surgeon.

Weight Loss - Can Surgery Help You?

MBBS, MS- General Surgery
General Surgeon,
Weight Loss - Can Surgery Help You?

Obesity is a serious problem that is on an exponential rise. The complications associated with the obesity are not only restricted to physical discomfort. There are many serious health complications and medical conditions such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia, Heart ailments and Infertility, that obesity might trigger. What is even more disturbing is the fact that India is considered to be the third largest obese country in the world. Not only this, there has been a steady increase in the percentage of teenagers and young adults suffering from obesity. Thus, it is important that every individual, irrespective of their age and sex should try and maintain a healthy body weight.

For an effective weight loss, one should first find out the underlying factor responsible for the obesity. While most people link obesity to unhealthy lifestyle habits and poor diet, the problem may also be an outcome of thyroid problems, hormonal imbalance, or diabetes, to name a few. While there may be many effective diet plans and weight loss programs to ensure fruitful results, surgery may come in handy when all other weight loss plans and programs end on a disappointing note.

When is surgery recommended?
The weight loss surgeries are often advised under the following situations
● People who put on weight in spite of having a low BMI (due to some medical conditions).
● People suffering from Morbid Obesity (in morbid obesity, the BMI of a person is found to be higher than 40).
● The other weight loss programs do not produce the desired results.

Most of the weight loss surgeries (such as the Laparoscopic Gastric Banding, Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Malabsorptive surgery) involve shrinking the size of the stomach by dividing it into two halves, a smaller upper portion, and a larger lower half. This is done to reduce the intake of food, thereby ensuring an effective weight loss.

  • In some other procedures, a part of the stomach may be surgically removed to reduce the size of the stomach (Sleeve Gastrectomy)
  • In Laparoscopic Malabsorption surgery, in addition to shrinking the size of the stomach, a large part of the intestine is bypassed so that there is minimal absorption of calories (from the intestine).

The different surgeries though impressive come with certain demerits.

  • Shrinking the size of the stomach may limit the intake of food, but there will also be less absorption of nutrients, which is essential for the body. As a result, a person may develop anemia or suffer from calcium deficiency disorders (such as osteoporosis).
  • Undergoing a surgery increases the risk of an infection at the site of the incision as well as blood loss (the laparoscopic surgeries which involve a small incision are an exception).
  • The surgeries alone cannot help in maintaining an ideal body weight. You have to lead a disciplined life. Eat a proper and balanced diet, follow a healthy lifestyle, and indulge in exercise and physical activities. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Surgeon.
